Jesus touched people’s lives by the way He lived. Jesus not only spoke the truth to those who were listening but He lived out the truth to a world that was watching. His life harmonized with His words and moved individuals and the masses to seek Him out. Jesus was kind, compassionate, and giving as He healed, fed, and forgave people. The actions of His life are a beacon of love that leads us to Him. We learn from Jesus that what we do matters just as much as what we say. This is especially true at work, where people are watching to see if we swim like the fish on our bumper. God knows we make it difficult for our coworkers to believe that His love keeps no record of wrongs if were always gossiping about other employees. Every lie we tell and grudge we hold causes our teammates to doubt that the truth can really set them free. I know for myself, too many times my behavior only taught my teammates about the fallen nature of man, rather than exhibiting any of the characteristics of God. Obviously, God is hoping for something better. He wants our office to be a sanctuary for the coworkers who avoided Him on Sunday to encounter Him in us throughout the week. Pleasing God by the way we work is how we lead the congregation of people that meets in our workplace into worshiping Him too.
God gives divine purpose, personal fulfillment, and a better night’s sleep to any job when our main concern is to humbly serve Him. We are called to be God’s ambassadors and every job, project, and assignment is a chance to represent Him by our attitude, words, and deeds. God helps us fulfill our calling by giving us His Spirit to teach us His ways and empower us to take what we’ve learned at church and apply it in our workplace. If the fruit of His Spirit is displayed in our actions, then seeds of faith will be sown into the hearts of our coworkers. Every time we act with kindness, self-discipline, and boldness of faith we glorify God in our office and draw our teammates to Him. We don’t need to book a conference room to explain how God forgives sinners; we can get the conversation started by simply admitting our mistakes rather than denying them. An honest and sincere apology is a great way to express our faith in God’s grace to the employee who thinks that they need to earn their way into heaven. Obviously, we can’t make our teammates go to church to learn about the love of God but no one will stop us from working in ways that let them experience His love through us.
All of us can get our priorities out of order and this book is meant to encourage us to work in ways that will bless us and make God known to others. If we will let God align our perspective with His Word, then we’ll be able to see the changes He wants to make in us. Transformation happens when we believe that God loves us just the way we are and actively trust that His ways are better than ours. We don’t have to be flawless to start walking with God; we simply need to be willing to be led by the One who promises to make us perfect. In writing this book, the Lord brought to my attention some of the times that I let my pride, greed, and insecurity get the best of me. I’ve added a few of my weak faith moments to let you see how silly and short sided it is to not trust in God while doing our jobs.
