Synopsis: This Book of Valor, setting down traditional tales of many lands, is necessarily a limited collection. Its selections have been made for their significance, as well as for their literary merit. The fairy tales are only a few of the thousands that have always delighted children. The myths and folklore are tiny segments of a great literary tradition. The courage of Hector and the daring of Odysseus merely hint at the wealth of Greek literature. The Christian stories, many and vivid though they are, stand out only as symbols of countless other Christian tales of valor. If this book brings to its reader glimpses of that valor, it will have accomplished its purpose. For with this courage, inspired by the sublime heroism of Christ, the followers of Christ have done brave deeds. Martyrs and missionaries, pilgrims and Crusaders, kings and peasants, soldiers and saints, following the fortitude of the Man who died upon a Cross, have set their names in letters of gold upon the pages of immortal fame.
