- Synopsis
- Rebecca Parrish is a beautiful young woman whose engaging, if somewhat foolish, husband was killed in a duel. Left a near pauper by her husband's gambling debts, she has just finished the customary year of mourning and is determined to find a wealthy father for her six-year-old son. No sooner does she trade in her black gowns than she attracts two suitors: the dashing but impoverished Trevelyan de Villars, whose intentions are far from honorable, and the handsome, rich, and always thoroughly correct Sir Peter Ward. But after she becomes the object of a wager between these two very different men, her innocent flirtation suddenly turns serious: Two men she loves prepare to duel over her--to the death. Meanwhile, a darker question lurks: Who shall rule England--George II or Bonnie Prince Charlie? Rebecca soon realizes that she has far more to worry about than a future husband: She must use all her wits to save a desperate, fugitive Jacobite. As she recognizes that people are seldom what they seem in this splendid new tale of love and danger by one of the most accomplished romantic novelists writing today.
