- Synopsis
- In this collection of personal essays, the author ranges across a long and adventurous life. In the opening essay, "Cream Toast in the Dining Room," she recounts a train trip from Connecticut to Maine in 1916, when she was six years old. Later pieces describe travels in Bolivia, Belize, and Morocco, and being shipwrecked on a remote Pacific island. In the final essay she shares her memories of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.
