- Synopsis
- “I Must Go To Her,” Mama Announced “Mama,” Katie said, “I’ll take care of Papa and Carolyn—and the boys—while you are gone.” The room was very quiet. Even Carolyn had nothing to say. The whole family turned toward Katie, acting as if, of one accord, they were weighing the import of her statement. Here was Katie Pierce, who in spite of all her willingness, could never quite get the hang of how to do things—cooking or anything else—offering to take over the family. Katie, scared of things and people alike, offering to step in and assume Mama’s place. “Why Katie,” Melinda burse out, “you can’t -you’re going off to school. Had you forgotten that?” Had she forgotten that? As if she could ever forget! “No—” Katie said, almost in a whisper. And then, “I can go next year.” Mama looked at her, a long, long look. She turned to Papa. He was quiet, in a way he had of letting them work out things for themselves. Finally Mama spoke. “Thank you, Katie,” she said simply. “It will be a great load off my mind.” It was arranged as simply as that—the thing Katie, in even her wildest dreams, would never have thought possible. Katie wasn’t going away to school at all. Mama was going away to take care of Grandmother, and leaving her in charge of the family. Over five years have passed since the Pierce family moved into the Texas Panhandle. Melinda, the oldest daughter, is about to marry and move to Amarillo. And now timid, artistic Katie, 15 years old, who had been about to fulfill her dream of going to school back in East Texas to study the things she loved and excelled in, is staying at home. During the next few months, timid Katie encounters one frightening situation after another, from humiliating cooking disasters, to tough boys at school, to a battle with a blizzard. Set against the picturesque backdrop of homesteading in the 1890’s, Katie’s horizons widen with each courageous step as she learns new skills and confidence— and comes to trust both herself and others in a deeper way. Second of the Texas Panhandle Tales.
