- Synopsis
- This engrossing family saga brings to life two indomitable women. Kate, the young » wife of Burns Hamilton, a Mormon missionary, is deeply in love with her husband and welcomes the prospect of a life of service in the Church of Latter Day Saints. In Utah she copes bravely with the rugged pioneer life and happily bears her children with high hopes for their future. Equally dear to Kate and Burns is the Indian boy they adopt and bring up as their own. Kate’s dream is shattered when Burns, ambitious for power, is prevailed upon by the Church to take a second and then a third wife. Although hurt and humiliated, Kate remains head of the multiple household and becomes more and more of a matriarchal figure as the years pass. Her children bring her both pain and pleasure, and her daughter Mary Ann’s poignant romance with her Indian “brother” is the central theme of the book’s second half. Watch for the Morning is a richly conceived novel, a moving love story, and a vivid picture of the Mormon settlement in Utah and of the hardships and indignities imposed upon its women. Readers will find it unforgettable.
