- Archaeological excavations began in the 1970s to reconstruct some 250 years of life at the 1,000 acre plantation that Virginia's first governor established roughly halfway between present-day Richmond and Williamsburg. Deetz (anthropology, U. of Virginia) presents some of the findings and pays particular attention to archaeology's value in fleshing out the stories of people omitted from written records, or included in only minimal or biased ways.
