- Synopsis
- Barry, noted feminist sociologist and author of Female Sexual Slavery, offers an enlightening biography of perhaps the most unconventional woman of her century. By drawing upon letters, diaries, and other documents, she integrates Anthony's personal story into the political, economic, and cultural milieu of 19th century America. Don't bother. You can get all this information elsewhere in an easier fashion. I was quite surprised after I completed proofreading this book to discover that the author is highly acclaimed in her field, with a Ph.D. I had previously assumed the book was written as a Ph.D. dissertation with the caveat to write it to a 7th grade reading level. All I can think of is that the wrong edition of the book was submitted. As proofreaders, we are to leave errors from the original copyright print edition as that follows the copyright laws. This book was obviously never copy-edited before printing. Errors abounded, often 6 or 7 to a page. Where a word would be spelled correctly near the top of a page, it was spelled incorrectly two other times on the same page, and sometimes the errors were even spelled differently. Resource footnotes would skip numbers, page numbers were off, the Table of Contents page listed the chapter numbers and titles, but did not include page numbers. Clearly, this was a manuscript-in-process, yet copyright laws pertained. I do not recommend this book to anyone for any scholarly reason. (It would provide a nice test for proofreaders: find and mark all of the errors!)
