This is one of the most awe inspiring books I have read. The author has done very detailed research, but that's not why this book is so special to me. Its chapters are filled with the stories and words of people who were broken in body and soul, yet they are healing and reaching out to others with love and hope. They faced the ultimate test, to deny their faith and live in safety, or hold fast and face torture, prison, and even death. Many people lost their families while in prison. Others lost their sight, hearing, or ability to walk. Chronic starvation and malnutrition are their lot. Yet they want to pray for us and to reach out to their communities. They share what little food they have with people in worse shape than they are in. It defies all logic that they respond in this way. This book helps me see that the little things that annoy me really aren't that important in the grand scheme of things. Compared with them, I don't know what sacrifice and courage mean. Whether you believe in God or not, the stories of people in this book will surprise you. Their joy and perseverance are a testimony to something bigger and more enduring than simple passion or commitment.
