I have never set foot in Philadelphia and I have no particular plans to do so. I read this book because I am trying to broaden my reading habits by reading things that I would never have read in the past and don't really feel all that enthusiastic about now. I chose this one pretty much at random and I expected it to be a bit boring. It turned out to be better than I expected though. That is happening not too infrequently with these books that I am choosing at random. This book seems to be mainly for tourists and covers the sights and attractions of Philadelphia, but one of the claims to fame that the city has is its role in history. Enough history is included in describing the historical attractions that it is a lesson in history and does get interesting in those parts. It is also kind of a tour of the city. Like I said, I don't especially have any reason to go there and so I probably will not ever go there, but this book does leave me feeling like I have visited the city after some fashion without ever leaving home. If someone ever asks me a question about Philadelphia - and no one ever has before - I just might be able to give them an answer now.
