What happens when I request a book?
Our staff members will verify that the book isn't in the collection, is needed for school, and that we can acquire a copy of the correct book for conversion.
(If your request isn't needed for school, it will be put on the Wish List, which our volunteer community uses to find books they'll add for us. If the book is available from the NIMAC, we'll pull a copy directly or as assigned to us by your state's NIMAC coordinator.)
Once the book has arrived at our offices, the spine is chopped off so that the pages can be fed through a high-speed scanner. The scanned file goes through an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software program for initial processing, then is proofed and formatted. Once we've checked that this was done properly, the book is uploaded to our DAISY converter -- and loaded into Bookshare's collection as a digitally accessible book.
You'll get an email from us when the book is available, with a link to help you find it quickly. You can check on the current status of your request any time by going to MyBookshare -- there will be a section on MyRequests.
