How do I submit Proof of Disability?

Why am I required to submit proof of disability?

Bookshare operates under an amendment to the US copyright law. This amendment allows Bookshare to distribute copies of previously published works in accessible formats exclusively for the use of someone who struggles to read standard print. Individual Members are required to submit proof of disability before they can read copyrighted materials. There are several methods for providing Proof of Disability, including reciprocal agreements with Learning Ally and NLS, as well as having a profesional complete the Bookshare Proof of Disability Form.

1. From your My Bookshare page, select the “Upgrade Today” banner.
2. Confirm you have a disability.
3. There are three ways to provide proof of disability:
   • National Library Service (BARD)
     • Submit membership information. Bookshare will verify it.
   • Learning Ally
     • Submit membership information. Bookshare will verify it.
   • Bookshare’s Proof of Disability Agreement
     • Enter the email of a qualifying professional who can certify the disability.
     • You can also download the form, print, get it signed, and submit to Bookshare following directions on the form.

Here’s what happens next when using Bookshare’s Proof of Disability form:

• The certifying professional receives an email with a personal link to complete your certification online.
• They fill out a short form confirming the type of qualifying disability and their own professional information, then sign it electronically through DocuSign.
• Once they sign, their certification is applied to your account automatically — you don’t need to do anything further.

For all methods of Proof of Disability, you will receive an email from Bookshare notifying you that your Proof of Disability has been accepted and you can read Bookshare books.
