- Synopsis
- Gina promised to stay close to home that morning when her mother was away, but she couldn't resist the invitation of her friend Dori to visit the circus on the other side of town. The two girls set off on their rollerskates on an expedition through their mixed-ethnic neighborhood of Philadelphia in 1932. And when they reached the circus grounds, the sights that they saw! There were elephants and clowns and people from the sideshow. But now it was almost noon and Gina was supposed to be home. Dori was nowhere to be seen, So Gina had to start home by herself and explain her absence to a worried mother. Rosario De Bello has dramatized the simultaneous attraction of adventure and the safety of a loving home. The story beautifully recalls a lost era of American cities when circuses were in tents, streets were safe for children and all policemen were kindly helpers.
