This is another superb collection of stories by Doyle. The Captain of the Polestar is told via a series of journal entries by a ship's surgeon characterized as JOHN M`ALISTER, RAY, student of medicine. The Polestar is a waling ship that is trapped in ice. The captain is consumed by what the surgeon considers to be insanity. Soon, strange occurrences begin to manifest around the ship. The men are superstitious and things are almost out of hand. Soon however, the ship is free of the ice which the men consider a lucky escape. Captain Craigie however is still possessed. The ship's path is blocked by another ice flow. The strange phenomenon occurs again and the captain disappears. The story then recounts the after math of this and the condition in which the sailors find the captain. There is some reference to the occult. The occult is explored in other stories too such as the one titled THE GREAT KEINPLATZ EXPERIMENT where a student and professor swap their souls. Most other stories have surprising endings. In particular I recommend THAT LITTLE SQUARE BOX. Written by Pranav Lal.
