Pregnancy and Postpartum Considerations for the Veterinary Team

by Emily Singler

Precautions often apply to pregnancy in any workplace, but being a vet in practice presents additional specific risks. There are concerns and uncertainty about potential hazards, from radiation and inhalant anesthesia exposure, to zoonoses, and the additional mental stress in a profession that already carries high suicide risk. This book reviews considerations for professionals in clinical veterinary medicine (large and small animal) while pregnant and after giving birth. Veterinarian and veterinary writer, consultant, and mentor Dr Emily Singler speaks directly to veterinary team members (veterinarians, technicians, CSRs, assistants, students) who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. She delivers scientific information on the specific risks to the mother and baby that may be encountered during pregnancy while working in veterinary medicine, with some of her own and others’ experiences to add perspective and humor. The book also covers topics related to mental health challenges, announcing a pregnancy and planning for parental leave, navigating the fourth trimester, and returning to work. We hope that having read this book, veterinary professionals – whether pregnant or working with pregnant colleagues – will feel better supported and empowered to make informed decisions.

Primates in History, Myth, Art, and Science

by Cecilia Veracini Bernard Wood

Non-human primates (hereafter just primates) play a special role in human societies, especially in regions where modern humans and primates co-exist. Primates feature in myths and legends and in traditional indigenous knowledge. Explorers observed them in the wild and brought them, at great cost, to Europe. There they were valued as pets and for display, their images featured in art and architecture, and where they were literally teased apart by scientists. The international team of contributors to this book draws these different perspectives together to show how primates helped humans better understand their own place in nature. The book will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate students as well scholars in disciplines ranging from anthropology to art history.Key features: Includes contributions from an international team of historians and natural scientists Integrates various perspectives and perceptions of non-human primates across time and place Summarizes the place of non-human primates in science, art and culture Includes rare early illustrations

Rags and the Adventure with Mrs Fox

by A. M. Houston

Rags is blossoming into a charming character who simply adores the company of people. He’s always eager to greet anyone he encounters with a joyful ‘hello’. On one memorable occasion, Rags approached a man by his garden gate, eager to make a new friend. The man, touched by Rags’ friendly gesture, gratefully expressed, ‘Thank you for being in the world.’ If Rags could talk, he’d surely have responded, ‘You’re welcome’. Rags still likes to find things on his walks. Rags shows me things that capture his interest. Amazingly, it is usually things that I would never have noticed and then I find them interesting too. I have learned that Rags has a special bark when he is on the trail of a fox. I think he really wants me to know how clever he is to have picked up the scent. This story about the adventure with Mrs Fox is true. Rags did search out the fox in his garden. We did find Mrs Fox in the woods watching us as we watched her. On another day, we really did find the baby foxes playing ‘catch’ in the woods. The scene with the chicken, well that was also true. Mrs Fox had to feed her babies and as the story shows, she was very good at that.
