Shikake: The Japanese Art Of Changing Behavior Through Design

by Naohiro Matsumura

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up meets Nudge in this irresistible design method from Japan. We are living in a time when behavioral change is necessary for our health and survival. Yet we find it exceedingly difficult to transform our own habits, let alone those of other people. Enter Naohiro Matsumura, whose powerful new design method is as astonishingly simple in its logic as it is sophisticated in its psychology. It allows any of us—from UX designers and marketers to concerned citizens and overworked parents—to address challenges in our homes, our public spaces, and our social interactions. As Matsumura shows, a shikake—or “device” in Japanese—is a design that exerts influence on us through subtle nudging, rather than direct command; it encourages a particular behavior without telling its (often unwitting) user the primary purpose of that behavior. For example: • Footprints in a store guide shoppers and keep them socially distant • A basketball hoop placed over a trash can entices children to tidy up their rooms • A symbol of a shrine in a public square encourages respectfulness • A staircase painted to look like piano keys prompts exercise through play Combining traditional Japanese aesthetics with the lessons of behavioral economics, Matsumura reveals how to identify the hidden design cues that already shape our world, and how shikakes can help us confront some of the most pressing challenges of our era, from pandemics to declining civic engagement to climate change and beyond. Mind-bending yet elegant, Shikake presents a tool kit for anyone who wants to create their own mindful designs, for the delight and betterment of us all.

Shine: Completing the Cycle of Excellence-How Praise and Recognition of Your People's Achievements Promotes Peak Performance

by Edward M. Hallowell

Praise and recognition are powerful motivators because they satisfy a fundamental human need-the need to feel valued for what we do. You, as a manager, are in a unique position to offer-or withhold-this recognition. In this chapter, bestselling author ("Driven to Distraction") and practicing psychiatrist Edward Hallowell focuses on how you can make your employees "Shine"-the fifth and final step in the Cycle of Excellence. Using recent discoveries in brain science (most notably that success has a much greater influence on the brain than failure) and real-life examples from Harvard University, Dana Corporation, and his own work with individuals, Hallowell explains how praise and recognition build self-esteem, which in turn drives greater effort and the determination to succeed. He even draws a connection between recognition and moral behavior, explaining that recognition not only motivates people to work harder but also strengthens their connection to the larger group, lessening the chances that they will act out of greed or self-interest. The chapter closes with a list of ten tips you can follow to encourage your people to shine in their jobs and perform at their peak-every day. This chapter was originally published as Chapter 6 of "Shine: Using Brain Science to Get the Best from Your People."

Shine

by Ned Hallowell

A manager's job is getting harder to do. But the central question for all managers - the one that separates great managers from the rest- is how to get the most from your people. What do you do when your most talented people fall short of their potential, or worse, fall off their game for awhile? How do you inspire a solid contributor to even more stellar performance? How do you find that spark? And turn it into a burning flame?According to best-selling author and psychiatrist, Ned Hallowell, it's all in the brain. Creating that spark and inspiring someone to perform at their highest levels isn't rocket science; but it is brain science, and it has yet to be codified into a simple and reliable process that all managers can use.Drawing from his expertise helping people reach their full potential and synthesizing the latest research on happiness, brain science, and performance, Hallowell does exactly that -- he offers a five step process that leads to peak performance. Based on the latest findings in the fast-moving field of high performance research and rooted in the work of Martin Seligman, Dan Gilbert, Marcus Buckingham, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, John Ratey, and many other experts in psychology and neuroscience, this book gives managers a simple and coherent framework for getting the best out of people:(1) Selection - how to put people in the right job, and give them the responsbilities that literally make their brains "light up;"(2) Connection - how to overcome the powerful forces that disconnect us interpersonally in today's workplace, and how to restore the positive connections that fuel superior performance;(3) Play - why play is essential to peak performance, and how managers can get it right;(4) Progress - when the pressure is on, how to challenge the right person at the right time;(5) Recognition - why reward systems always decrease peak performance, and how managers can finally get this rightThe value of the five steps is that each step builds on another. For instance, there's no point in challenging an employee to go beyond their personal best if you haven't bothered to ensure first that you've got them in the right job. And there's no way to successfully get someone to think more creatively if you haven't first established the personal connection with her so that she knows her wild ideas will be taken seriously. And there's no point in demanding more, if you haven't first given employees a chance to engage their imagination and play around with the things that "light up their brains."Especially in times of mental overload and stress, when invoking people to suck it up or work even harder isn't an effective management tool, managers need a new game plan, like the one in this book, for helping their people perform at their best.

Shinhan Financial Group (A)

by Ryan Raffaelli Rosabeth Moss Kanter

Mr. Young Hwi Choi, president and CEO of Shinhan Financial Group, embarked on an unconventional post-merger integration strategy with recently acquired Chohung Bank. The strategy focused on integrating traditional operations while attending to employees' reactions to change, especially the unionized workers at Chohung, an older bank that had recently fallen into decline, compared with the success of younger, more entrepreneurial Shinhan Bank. Once complete, the new bank would make Shinhan Financial Group the second largest bank in South Korea. Managing change involved a period called "dual bank" in which Shinhan and Chohung operated in parallel while undergoing an "emotional integration."

Shinsei Bank: Developing an Integrated Firm

by Thomas J. Delong

Tom Pedersen, newly appointed chief learning officer (CLO) of Shinsei Bank in Japan, pondered how he could facilitate development of an integrated culture and transformation of the organization. Shinsei Bank had not developed longstanding tradition or a strong corporate culture. The bank, which was made up of professionals with extremely diverse backgrounds, had to develop an integrated organizational culture. Pedersen had just administered a new performance evaluation program for 17 senior executives. This was the first time that they had been measured against competencies aligned with the corporate vision and values revised in late 2005. He thought the evaluation program was critical for permeating the vision and values throughout the bank and was eager to roll out the program to a larger number of employees next year. Pedersen wondered how he should improve the performance evaluation, and if this was the right process to influence the culture of the bank? He also wondered what other measures might be effective to get employees with diverse backgrounds to work together. How could he create a learning organization at Shinsei Bank?

Shiny Objects

by James A. Roberts

Americans toss out 140 million cell phones every year. We discard 2 million plastic bottles every five minutes. And our total credit-card debt as of July 2011 is $793 billion. Plus, credit cards can make you fat. The American Dream was founded on the belief that anyone dedicated to thrift and hard work could create opportunities and achieve a better life. Now that dream has been reduced to a hyperquantified desire for fancier clothes, sleeker cars, and larger homes. We've lost our way, but James Roberts argues that it's not too late to find it again. In Shiny Objects, he offers us an opportunity to examine our day-to-day habits, and once again strive for lives of quality over quantity. Mining his years of research into the psychology of consumer behavior, Roberts gets to the heart of the often-surprising ways we make our purchasing decisions. What he and other researchers in his field have found is that no matter what our income level, Americans believe that we need more to live a good life. But as our standard of living has climbed over the past forty years, our self-reported "happiness levels" have flatlined. Roberts isn't merely concerned with the GDP or big-ticket purchases-damaging spending habits play out countless times a day, in ways big and small: he demonstrates that even the amount we spend at our favorite fast-food joint increases anywhere from 60 to 100 percent when we use a credit card instead of cash. Every time we watch TV or turn on a radio we're exposed to marketing messages (experts estimate up to 3,000 of them daily). Consumption is king, and its toll is not just a financial one: relationships are suffering, too, as materialism encroaches on the time and value we give the people around us. By shedding much-needed light on the science of spending, Roberts empowers readers to make smart changes, improve self-control, and curtail spending. The American Dream is still ours for the taking, and Shiny Objects is ultimately a hopeful statement about the power we each hold to redefine the pursuit of happiness.

Ship Repairing: Analyses and Estimates (Springer Series on Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Shipbuilding and Shipping #12)

by Arun Kr Dev Makaraksha Saha George Bruce

This book highlights the relationship between independent and dependent ship repairing variables of various combinations under linear and nonlinear form using actual data collected from shipyards. Independent variables refer to age, deadweight, cubic number, principal dimensions, and type of ships. Dependent variables refer to repairing time, docking time, repairing labor, docking labor, hull blasting renewal area, hull painting renewal area, pipe renewal length, structural steel renewal weight, and structural steel renewal locations. Mathematical models are developed involving appropriate variables using multiple linear regression analysis technique for different combinations of variables of ship repair. Adequacy of models is tested using statistical parameters like coefficients of multiple determination and F statistic (calculated and tabulated). Also, validation is presented to determine the deviation of model value from the observed value and their statistical parameters to justify the adequacy of the respective estimate models. The book also emphasises the importance of managing the labor force, reliable data collection and an effective management information system to manage this as well as keeping control of on-going repair contracts.

by Niels P. Petersson Stig Tenold Nicholas J. White

This open access book belongs to the Maritime Business and Economic History strand of the Palgrave Studies in Maritime Economics book series. This volume highlights the contribution of the shipping industry to the transformations in business and society of the postwar era. Shipping was both an example and an engine of globalization and structural change. In turn, the industry experienced and pioneered, mirrored and enabled key developments that led to the present-day globalized economy. Contributions address issues such as the macro-level shift of shipping’s centre of gravity from Europe to Asia, the political and legal frameworks within which it developed, the strategies and performance of both successful and unsuccessful firms, and the links between the shipping industry and the wider economy and society. Without shipping and its ability to forge connections and networks of a global reach, the modern world would look very different. By bringing together scholars from various disciplinary and national backgrounds, this book advances our understanding of the linkages that bind economies and societies together.
