Antisemitism in Film Comedy in Nazi Germany (Encounters: Explorations in Folklore and Ethnomusicology)
by Valerie WeinsteinHow party propagandists worked behind the scenes to create unspoken racist messages in the German culture—even in the most lighthearted of movies. Today many Germans look back fondly on 1930s film comedies, viewing them as a part of the Nazi era that was not tainted with antisemitism. Here, Valerie Weinstein scrutinizes these comic productions and demonstrates that film comedy, despite its innocent appearance, was a critical component in the effort to separate &“Jews&” from &“Germans&” physically, economically, and artistically. Weinstein highlights how the German propaganda ministry used directives, pre- and post-production censorship, financial incentives, and influence over film critics and their judgments to replace Jewish &“wit&” with a slower, simpler, and more direct German &“humor&” that affirmed values that the Nazis associated with the Aryan race. Through contextualized analyses of historical documents and individual films, Weinstein reveals how humor, coded hints and traces, absences, and substitutes in Third Reich film comedy helped spectators imagine an abstract &“Jewishness&” and a &“German&” identity and community free from the former. As resurgent populist nationalism and overt racism continue to grow around the world today, Weinstein&’s study helps us rethink racism and prejudice in popular culture and reconceptualize the relationships between film, humor, national identity, and race.
Antisocial: Online Extremists, Techno-Utopians, and the Hijacking of the American Conversation
by Andrew MarantzFrom a rising star at The New Yorker, a deeply immersive chronicle of how the optimistic entrepreneurs of Silicon Valley set out to create a free and democratic internet--and how the cynical propagandists of the alt-right exploited that freedom to propel the extreme into the mainstream.

For several years, Andrew Marantz, a New Yorker staff writer, has been embedded in two worlds. The first is the world of social-media entrepreneurs, who, acting out of naïvete and reckless ambition, upended all traditional means of receiving and transmitting information. The second is the world of the people he calls "the gate crashers"--the conspiracists, white supremacists, and nihilist trolls who have become experts at using social media to advance their corrosive agenda.

Antisocial ranges broadly--from the first mass-printed books to the trending hashtags of the present; from secret gatherings of neo-Fascists to the White House press briefing room--and traces how the unthinkable becomes thinkable, and then how it becomes reality. Combining the keen narrative detail of Bill Buford's Among the Thugs and the sweep of George Packer's The Unwinding, Antisocial reveals how the boundaries between technology, media, and politics have been erased, resulting in a deeply broken informational landscape--the landscape in which we all now live.

Marantz shows how alienated young people are led down the rabbit hole of online radicalization, and how fringe ideas spread--from anonymous corners of social media to cable TV to the President's Twitter feed. Marantz also sits with the creators of social media as they start to reckon with the forces they've unleashed. Will they be able to solve the communication crisis they helped bring about, or are their interventions too little too late?
Applications of Artificial Intelligence Techniques in Industry 4.0 (SpringerBriefs in Applied Sciences and Technology)
by Aydin AziziThis book is to presents and evaluates a way of modelling and optimizing nonlinear RFID Network Planning (RNP) problems using artificial intelligence techniques. It uses Artificial Neural Network models (ANN) to bind together the computational artificial intelligence algorithm with knowledge representation an efficient artificial intelligence paradigm to model and optimize RFID networks. This effort leads to proposing a novel artificial intelligence algorithm which has been named hybrid artificial intelligence optimization technique to perform optimization of RNP as a hard learning problem. This hybrid optimization technique consists of two different optimization phases. First phase is optimizing RNP by Redundant Antenna Elimination (RAE) algorithm and the second phase which completes RNP optimization process is Ring Probabilistic Logic Neural Networks (RPLNN). The hybrid paradigm is explored using a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) and the results are compared with well-known evolutionary optimization technique namely Genetic Algorithm (GA) to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed architecture successfully.

Arranging and Describing Archives and Manuscripts
by Dennis MeissnerArrangement and description lie at the very heart of the archival endeavor. While all archival functions are crucial and interdependent, arrangement and description transform the potential value of materials into practical, usable value for researchers and others. In this book, the author provides a solid foundation in the history, theory, and standards supporting arrangement and description. In addition, he clearly demonstrates the approaches, methods, and mechanics required to process archival collections. The processing landscape has changed considerably in the last decade: archivists focus more on the economics of processing, descriptive standards have matured and increased in number, new technologies and viewpoints have challenged long-standing assumptions, and evolving systems and software have changed the mechanics of metadata capture and serialization and our approaches to those fundamental processes. This is a must-read book for every archivist practicing today.

by Suzanne Jill Levine Russell Scott Valentino John Cayley Lydia H Liu Naoki Sakai Deborah Folaron Margaret A Noodin Yiman Wang Martha Pulido Olga Behar Elizabeth R Drame Lorena TerandoSince the 1970s, the field of Translation Studies has entered into dialogue with an array of other disciplines, sustaining a close but contentious relationship with literary translation. At Translation’s Edge expands this interdisciplinary dialogue by taking up questions of translation across sub-fields and within disciplines, including film and media studies, comparative literature, history, and education among others. For the contributors to this volume, translation is understood in its most expansive, transdisciplinary sense: translation as exchange, migration, and mobility, including cross-cultural communication and media circulation. Whether exploring the Universal Declaration of Human Rights or silent film intertitles, this volume brings together the work of scholars aiming to address the edges of Translation Studies while engaging with major and minor languages, colonial and post-colonial studies, feminism and disability studies, and theories of globalization and empire.
Audience of One: Donald Trump, Television And The Fracturing Of America
by James PoniewozikOne of the Top 10 Politics and Current Events Books of Fall 2019 (Publishers Weekly) An incisive cultural history that captures a fractious nation through the prism of television and the rattled mind of a celebrity president. Television has entertained America, television has ensorcelled America, and with the election of Donald J. Trump, television has conquered America. In Audience of One, New York Times chief television critic James Poniewozik traces the history of TV and mass media from the Reagan era to today, explaining how a volcanic, camera-hogging antihero merged with America’s most powerful medium to become our forty-fifth president. In the tradition of Neil Postman’s masterpiece Amusing Ourselves to Death, Audience of One shows how American media have shaped American society and politics, by interweaving two crucial stories. The first story follows the evolution of television from the three-network era of the 20th century, which joined millions of Americans in a shared monoculture, into today’s zillion-channel, Internet-atomized universe, which sliced and diced them into fractious, alienated subcultures. The second story is a cultural critique of Donald Trump, the chameleonic celebrity who courted fame, achieved a mind-meld with the media beast, and rode it to ultimate power. Braiding together these disparate threads, Poniewozik combines a cultural history of modern America with a revelatory portrait of the most public American who has ever lived. Reaching back to the 1940s, when Trump and commercial television were born, Poniewozik illustrates how Donald became “a character that wrote itself, a brand mascot that jumped off the cereal box and entered the world, a simulacrum that replaced the thing it represented.” Viscerally attuned to the media, Trump shape-shifted into a boastful tabloid playboy in the 1980s; a self-parodic sitcom fixture in the 1990s; a reality-TV “You’re Fired” machine in the 2000s; and finally, the biggest role of his career, a Fox News–obsessed, Twitter-mad, culture-warring demagogue in the White House. Poniewozik deconstructs the chaotic Age of Trump as the 24-hour TV production that it is, decoding an era when politics has become pop culture, and vice versa. Trenchant and often slyly hilarious, Audience of One is a penetrating and sobering review of the raucous, raging, farcical reality show—performed for the benefit of an insomniac, cable-news-junkie “audience of one”—that we all came to live in, whether we liked it or not.

Auteurschap: Hoe u uw boek in uw eentje publiceert!
by Owen JonesAuteurschap Hoe u uw boek in uw eentje publiceert!
Authentic Gravitas: Who Stands Out and Why
by Rebecca NewtonHave a powerful impact—by being more like yourself rather than less, through this groundbreaking approach taught at the London School of Economics and companies worldwide.Organizational psychologist and executive coach Rebecca Newton has found that even her most successful clients still want more of one quality: gravitas. They want their words to carry weight, to have a positive, lasting impact on those around them. Gravitas can seem like an elusive, intangible quality, but it isn't about adopting the style of another or being someone you're not. Newton draws on extensive research and experience coaching business leaders to show what underpins authentic gravitas and how anyone can develop it. She presents the counterintuitive idea that in order to be valued, we shouldn't spend all our time and energy trying to stand out from the crowd; instead, we should focus on the crowd--connecting with others and understanding their needs in order to make a significant difference.Newton debunks the myths of gravitas and gives readers the practical tools to develop it by: * Minimizing the gaps between intention, action, and impact * Remaining true to yourself while adapting to work successfully with people who have different styles * Choosing to be courageous regardless of how confident you feel--as you engage in courageous behaviors, confidence naturally buildsAuthentic gravitas extends beyond commanding presence in the room during a key meeting; it's about the small things you can do beforehand, during, and in all the spaces in between--to be someone who genuinely adds substantive value in the workplace and beyond.
Automating the News: How Algorithms Are Rewriting the Media
by Nicholas DiakopoulosFrom hidden connections in big data to bots spreading fake news, journalism is increasingly computer-generated.
Autorschaft: So veröffentlichen Sie Ihr Buch selbst!
by Owen JonesAutorschaft So veröffentlichen Sie Ihr Buch selbst!
