Student Engagement in Neoliberal Times

This book investigates origins, meanings, uses and effects of student engagement in higher education, and addresses three core questions: (1) Why is student engagement so visible in higher education today? (2) What are its dominant characteristics? (3) What is missing in the popular view of student engagement? These questions pave the way for a fresh approach to student engagement. The book argues that an elective affinity between student engagement and policies embedded in neoliberalism, the dominant ideology of the early 21st century, enables student engagement to transcend diverse intellectual and practice contexts. This affinity encourages quality learning and teaching that enables student to succeed in their studies and future careers. The book shows that focusing on neoliberal objectives for learning and teaching limits the potential of student engagement in higher education. This conclusion leads to a critical and practical social-ecological perspective that approaches engagement more as a pathway to social justice than as a list of techniques. This book is a work of critical scholarship backed by empirical research. It questions accepted theories and practices and offers fresh insights into student engagement in higher education, including how engagement could promote social justice.

Land abandonment which occurs on all continents is qualitatively and quantitatively assessed and the consequences for natural and cultural heritage loss is highlighted. With the presentation of current rural development and landscape conservation strategies on the national as well as international level, the topic reflects the high significance of environmental policy on the global scale. The global implementation of natural and cultural heritage conservation is, for example, given by the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, National Parks, Biosphere Reserves, Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Sites, High Nature Value Farmland, and the Satoyama initiative. Fortschritte u.a. in künstlicher Intelligenz erweitern die Automatisierungsmöglichkeiten. Um mit diesen Veränderungen Schritt halten zu können, wird Weiterbildung große Bedeutung beigemessen. Besonders wichtig erscheint dies für Beschäftigte mit vielen automatisierbaren Tätigkeiten. In diesem Buch wird untersucht, inwieweit diese Personen an Weiterbildung teilnehmen und ob die Bildungsmaßnahmen einen entsprechenden Nutzen bringen. Analysen auf Basis des Nationalen Bildungspanels zeigen, dass Beschäftigte mit hohem Automatisierungsrisiko eine tendenziell geringere Weiterbildungswahrscheinlichkeit aufweisen, während Weiterbildungserträge durchaus existieren. Je nach Weiterbildungs- bzw. Ertragsform und unter Berücksichtigung der Heterogenität der Beschäftigten ergeben sich z.T. deutliche Unterschiede, die die Relevanz einer differenzierten Betrachtung, auch für die Ableitung politischer Implikationen, verdeutlichen.

China's Formal Online Education under COVID-19: Actions from Government, Schools, Enterprises, and Families (China Perspectives)

This book investigates how schools, enterprises and families in China have coped with the formal online education in the light of government policy throughout the COVID-19 epidemic outbreak, with special focus on the problems they have encountered and possible solutions. Using grounded theory, over 1000 posts retrieved from public online forums were analyzed under a 4*4 framework, referring to four special time nodes (proposal period, exploratory period, full deployed period, exiting period) and four major subjects (government, schools, enterprises, families). The book identifies four main issues faced by massive online education during the epidemic: platform selection in proposal period, teacher training in exploratory period, resource integration in full deployed period, and flexibility of returning to schools in exiting period. These findings enlighten us with a deeper understanding of the process of online learning in an educational emergency, helping to develop best countermeasures in similar situations, as well as to provide paths to follow for other countries. The book will appeal to teachers, researchers and school administrators of the online education and education emergency management, as well as those who are interested in Chinese education during the COVID-19 outbreak in general.
