Ultra-Processed People: Why We Can't Stop Eating Food That Isn't Food

by Chris van Tulleken

THE #1 INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER • LONGLISTED FOR THE BAILLIE GIFFORD PRIZE FOR NONFICTION • The bestselling and eye-opening investigation into the science, economics, history and impact of ultra-processed food. With a new Afterword by the author.Named a Best Book of the Year by NPR • The Economist • The Times • The New Yorker • Smithsonian • Daily Mail • The Guardian • Financial Times • and more! It's not you, it's the food. How much of our daily caloric intake comes from ingesting substances that, technically speaking, do not meet traditional definitions of &“food&”? Chances are, if you&’re eating something that came wrapped in plastic and contains a funky ingredient you don&’t have in your kitchen, it's most likely—almost definitely—ultra-processed food, or UPF. More than the principal obstacle to &“eating right,&” UPF has been linked to metabolic disease, depression, inflammation, anxiety, and cancer, while the production, distribution, and disposal of UPF and related products globally is known to cause devastating environmental damage. At the same time, UPF represents the dominant, nigh-unavoidable food culture for millions upon millions of eaters.Medical doctor and broadcaster Chris van Tulleken has spent his career trying to reframe the conversation around eating right, balancing the hard (and sometimes shocking) facts about what we're putting into our bodies with empathy for the natural desire to keep eating what we like, have time for, and can afford. As he argues in this book, we are all participants in an experiment we didn't consent to, one to determine how to get us to buy as much ultra-processed food as possible. It&’s not as simple as stumbling across the right diet trend, finding time to meal plan, or avoiding over-indulging in sugar, fat, or carbs or any other culprit. Nor is it a matter of individual will. It&’s about learning to live in &“the third age of eating&”—defined by the overwhelming abundance of ultra-processed eating options—and arming yourself with the simple and not-so-simple facts that will help you make the choices that are right for you.

Intuitively Rational: How We Think and How We Should

by Andrew McGee Charles Foster

This book is about the respective roles of intuition and reasoning in ethics. It responds to a number of well-known philosophers and psychologists, and proposes a new perspective – radical in its moderation. It examines in depth the work of the philosopher Joshua Greene and the psychologist Jonathan Haidt. With the so-called empirical turn in ethics, much work has been done to try to isolate the role of reason and intuition in forming our moral judgements, with Haidt and Greene leading the research programmes and attracting much of the professional and public attention, and many others following. The current view – shared by both camps – is that intuition is largely the driver of our moral judgements – a view summed up in Haidt’s slogan ‘intuition first, strategic reasoning second’. Haidt believes we have to live with this and accept it. Greene does not: he contends that our intuitions, while suitable for the environments in which we evolved, are worthless in the modern, global, technological age, and to avoid ethical disaster we must learn to adopt reason as the arbiter of moral truth. This book steers a middle course between these two positions and is therefore of great interest to philosophers and psychologists alike.

Beyond Rare

by Elaine Schallock Drenth

It’s well-known within the personality community that, statistically speaking anyway, INFJs are the “rarest” of the 16 types. And because they grow up feeling “different” or misunderstood—possibly even like outsiders—they experience a profound sense of relief and validation upon discovering their personality type and its relative rarity. In this singular “aha” moment, whatever angst or confusion they may have been wrestling with is replaced by a sense of clarity and empowerment. And while embracing the unique or “rare” aspects of their personality can be a useful first step toward self-understanding, it can only take INFJs so far. Past a certain point in the self-discovery process, holding fast to their rareness may actually deceive them into believing that they’ve come to end of the road, growth wise. In other words, awareness of their rarity may constitute knowledge, but not necessarily wisdom—a distinction only earned once they learn to redirect their focus from their status as outliers and black swans toward matters of personal development. This book aims to shed light on what a successful path to growth and development might look like for INFJs. Not only does it explore INFJs’ exceptional qualities that are worth strengthening and honing, but also their blindspots and pitfalls, so they can manifest their full creative potential. It invites INFJs to embark on a journey of self-transformation—both conceptually and experientially—which can only be described as “beyond rare.”
