Satanic Memories: Satanic Memories

by Daniel Canals Flores

I like writing within the horror genre because it allows you to merge reality and fantasy relatively easily. This compilation contains some new texts and others, published in various literary media, with a common link: evil, both human and supernatural. In “Evil Escape” we will witness an incredible escape and subsequent revenge. “In nomine” is a tribute to diabolical possession set in the Middle Ages. In “The Infernal Cube” we will penetrate the human psyche and descend into hell itself. “The Revolution” is a disturbing story that will show us another perspective on evil. “The Apocryphal Phantasm Screenplay” is a parody about this fantastic horror film saga, from the late 70s. “The Last Christmas” represents the antithesis of the Christmas holidays, with a different perspective. “Birth” is a short but intense story. In “The Extraordinary Case of Susan Malcolm” we will learn the secrets of voodoo and its lethal consequences and in “Sanatorium La Chapelle” we will experience a curious rescue in a machiavellian place. I hope you enjoy reading this book, as much as I did writing it.

The Sinful Maternal: Motherhood in Possession Films (Horror and Monstrosity Studies Series)

by Lauren Rocha

Pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery are challenging experiences that impact women’s physical, mental, and emotional health in ways that have been historically minimalized, dismissed, or neglected. A mother’s body becomes a public body, physically and politically not her own, instead shared by her spouse, her children, and those around her. Her body, therefore, makes the perfect vessel for an invasive presence—or possession. The Sinful Maternal: Motherhood in Possession Films examines the role of mothers and motherhood in ten possession films, including Rosemary’s Baby, The Exorcist, The Babadook, and Hereditary. Chapters discuss the work of such directors as James Wan, Jennifer Kent, Robert Eggers, and Ari Aster to address how their cinematic approaches to these films produce rich possession narratives that explore different facets of motherhood and women’s agency. Working at the intersections of gender studies, architectural theory, trauma studies, and monster theory, with a particular focus on the treatment of (often unruly) female bodies, author Lauren Rocha investigates the ways in which motherhood is a fertile state for possession and how possession acts to influence, destabilize, and reshape identity and the self. Placing the films in chronological order, she closely analyzes the ways in which sociocultural influences create different roles women and mothers are expected to perform. Ultimately, Rocha demonstrates how possession offers a way to challenge performative motherhood to free the self.

I loved every moment of it.&’ James Smythe &‘The Sleepwalkers is brilliant, savage and hilarious. The voice is so strong and so distinctive from the get-go, so bold and pitilessly funny. There is no whingeing here, just a fearless takedown which I read through in a single streak of pure delight. This is Scarlett's best yet, and I don't say that lightly.&’ Bidisha Mamata'The Sleepwalkers is never-endingly surprising and full of keen observations on relationships, politics, and art. Thomas makes real life so fraught with meaning, it feels hauntingly supernatural. A twisty Gothic tale of vertiginous depths and haunting power.' Sandra Newman, author of Julia 'This original thriller has plenty of surprises.' Good Housekeeping 'An attractive summer holiday read', Independent Still reeling from the chaos of their wedding, Evelyn and Richard arrive on an idyllic Greek island for their honeymoon. It&’s the end of the season and out at sea a storm is brewing. They check in to an exclusive hotel, the Villa Rosa, where the proprietor Isabella — a strangely intense woman of indeterminate accent — flirts outrageously with Richard while treating Evelyn with a rudeness bordering on contempt. Isabella tells them the story of 'the sleepwalkers': a couple who stayed at the hotel the year before and drowned in a tragic and unexplained accident. It starts to feel like the entire island is obsessed with 'the sleepwalkers', but what at first seems like a fun tale to tell before bed quickly evolves into a living nightmare. Caught in a web of deception and intrigue, where nothing and nobody are quite what they seem, Evelyn and Richard discover that their island paradise may in fact be hell on earth and that their only means of escape is to confront dark truths about themselves and those they love. Exhilarating, suspenseful, and subversively funny, in The Sleepwalkers Thomas takes elements on Daphne Du Maurier and Patricia Highsmith and blends them with her own unique sensibility to create an unforgettable thriller of rare intelligence that cements her reputation as the most exciting and original author of her generation. &‘Muriel Spark&’s disreputable niece.&’ Spectator &‘She's a genius.&’ Douglas Coupland &‘Thomas has the mesmerising power of a great story teller.&’ Financial Times &‘One of the most startling, unpredictable writers of her generation.&’ Scotsman
