Penile Color Duplex-Doppler Ultrasound in Erectile Dysfunction Diagnosis and Management: A Complete Guide to Best Practices

by Eduardo de Miranda Felipe Carneiro

Penile Color Duplex-Doppler Ultrasound (PDU) is one of the most important tools available to assess patients with erectile dysfunction (ED), which is a prevalent condition affecting near 50% of men over 50 years of age. Hemodynamic evaluations through PDU have also prognostic value and help choose the best treatment strategy for ED. Although PDU is an objective diagnostic method, the lack of standardized protocols is one of its main limitations and might lead to great variability in performing and interpreting penile hemodynamic studies in both clinical practice and scientific research. These factors have contributed to the fact that PDU is often considered unreliable, as it may lead to mistaken treatment protocols. The aim of the present book is to provide a complete guide to performing an adequate hemodynamic study through PDU with pharmaco-induced erection. It will provide a detailed and illustrative overview of the most common pitfalls for a correct conduction ofthis diagnostic procedure. We will also provide an extensive review of the basic principles in erection physiology and pharmacology, allowing a broader understanding of the implications of PDU in clinical practice. This book will appeal to radiologists and urologists. Its highly informative content will become the ultimate guide not only for fully trained physicians who want to optimize and standardize their procedures, but also for residents and trainees of these specialties. In addition, it will be a useful resource for sexual medicine practitioners, and may reach other specialties and/or healthcare areas such as primary care physicians, gynecologists, psychiatrists and psychologists.

Penile Implant Surgery: Contemporary Challenges and Controversies

by Eduardo P. Miranda John P. Mulhall

Penile implants have been an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED) for more than 40 years. However, there is now a growing interest in this treatment option, as the number of procedures is expected to increase in the future. This book offers a reference guide for all those practitioners interested in understanding and/or performing this procedure. It will also benefit those in medical education who want to obtain specialized and high-quality knowledge regarding the complexities involved in penile implant surgery. Although the basic description of penile implant surgery is well documented in the literature, a detailed and comprehensive guide with a special focus on the most challenging and controversial aspects is lacking. The few books available on the topic provide a broad overview of prosthetic surgery in general, mainly discuss basic principles, and fail to provide a more detailed perspective. This comprehensive book discusses various aspects of penile implant surgery, ranging from indications to long-term complications. It addresses the most common and serious challenges regarding penile implants, which are rarely discussed elsewhere. The respective chapters were written by internationally respected experts on the controversies of penile prosthetic surgery. The book is intended for all those who plan to specialize in penile implant surgery, which include, but are not limited to, residents and fully trained urologists, as well as fellows and practitioners in sexual medicine and reconstructive urology.

Intrinsically Motivated Learning in Natural and Artificial Systems

by Marco Mirolli Gianluca Baldassarre

It has become clear to researchers in robotics and adaptive behaviour that current approaches are yielding systems with limited autonomy and capacity for self-improvement. To learn autonomously and in a cumulative fashion is one of the hallmarks of intelligence, and we know that higher mammals engage in exploratory activities that are not directed to pursue goals of immediate relevance for survival and reproduction but are instead driven by intrinsic motivations such as curiosity, interest in novel stimuli or surprising events, and interest in learning new behaviours. The adaptive value of such intrinsically motivated activities lies in the fact that they allow the cumulative acquisition of knowledge and skills that can be used later to accomplish fitness-enhancing goals. Intrinsic motivations continue during adulthood, and in humans they underlie lifelong learning, artistic creativity, and scientific discovery, while they are also the basis for processes that strongly affect human well-being, such as the sense of competence, self-determination, and self-esteem. This book has two aims: to present the state of the art in research on intrinsically motivated learning, and to identify the related scientific and technological open challenges and most promising research directions. The book introduces the concept of intrinsic motivation in artificial systems, reviews the relevant literature, offers insights from the neural and behavioural sciences, and presents novel tools for research. The book is organized into six parts: the chapters in Part I give general overviews on the concept of intrinsic motivations, their function, and possible mechanisms for implementing them; Parts II, III, and IV focus on three classes of intrinsic motivation mechanisms, those based on predictors, on novelty, and on competence; Part V discusses mechanisms that are complementary to intrinsic motivations; and Part VI introduces tools and experimental frameworks for investigating intrinsic motivations. The contributing authors are among the pioneers carrying out fundamental work on this topic, drawn from related disciplines such as artificial intelligence, robotics, artificial life, evolution, machine learning, developmental psychology, cognitive science, and neuroscience. The book will be of value to graduate students and academic researchers in these domains, and to engineers engaged with the design of autonomous, adaptive robots. Quantification of Contrast Kinetics in Clinical Imaging (SpringerBriefs in Applied Sciences and Technology)

by Massimo Mischi Simona Turco Osama I. Soliman Folkert J. ten Cate Hessel Wijkstra Ivo Schoots

This book provides a comprehensive survey of the pharmacokinetic models used for the quantitative interpretation of contrast-enhanced imaging. It discusses all the available imaging technologies and the problems related to the calibration of the imaging system and accuracy of the estimated physiological parameters. Enhancing imaging modalities using contrast agents has opened up new opportunities for going beyond morphological information and enabling minimally invasive assessment of tissue and organ functionality down to the molecular level. In combination with mathematical modeling of the contrast agent kinetics, contrast- enhanced imaging has the potential to provide clinically valuable additional information by estimating quantitative physiological parameters. The book presents the broad spectrum of diagnostic possibilities provided by quantitative contrast-enhanced imaging, with a particular focus on cardiology and oncology, as well as novel developments in the area of quantitative molecular imaging along with their potential clinical applications. Given the variety of available techniques, the choice of the appropriate imaging modality and the most suitable pharmacokinetic model is often challenging. As such, the book provides a valuable technical guide for researchers, clinical scientists, and experts in the field who wish to better understand and properly apply tracer-kinetic modeling for quantitative contrast-enhanced imaging.
