Chronicles of an African Trip
by George EastmanThis gripping book, which was first published in 1927, preserves a series of letters written by the author, George Eastman, founder of the Eastman Kodak Company. The letters chronicle Eastman’s adventures on a hunting trip into the interior of Africa that he made during the summer of 1926 with Daniel E. Pomeroy and Dr. Audley D. Stewart. The party departed New York for the African continent on March 13, 1926. Landing at Mombasa, they proceeded to Nairobi, where they established headquarters, making from there various long trips into the hunting regions of the interior. Stewart and Eastman returned to Rochester on October 24, 1926.During this trip, Eastman also met Martin and Osa Johnson, the American adventurers and documentary filmmaker couple that captured the public’s imagination through their films and books of adventure in exotic, faraway lands in the first half of the 20th century. The couple were on a four-year expedition to track the lion across Kenyan veld to his lair, footage of which was later used to make their 1928 black-and-white silent documentary film, Simba: The King of the Beasts.Beautifully illustrated throughout with photographs taken on the trip.

These concerns raise significant questions regarding the utility of negotiating agreements through the UN. This book elucidates the complexity of how participants engage in these negotiations through the various processes that take place under the auspices of the UN—primarily those related to climate and biological diversity. By taking an ethnographic approach and providing concrete examples of how it is that civil society participants engage in making policy, this book develops a robust sense of the implications of the current terrain of policy-making—both for the environment, and for the continued participation of non-state actors in multilateral environmental governance. Using data gathered at actual negotiations, the book develops concepts such as participation and governance beyond theory. The research uses participant observation ethnographic methods to tie the theoretical frameworks to people’s actual activities as policy is generated and contested. Whereas topics associated with global environmental governance are traditionally addressed in fields such as international relations and political science, this book contributes to developing a richer understanding of the theories using a sociological framework, tying individual activities into larger social relations and shedding light on critical questions associated with transnational civil society and global politics.

Growing Resistance: Canadian Farmers and the Politics of Genetically Modified Wheat

Canadian farmers' strong opposition to GM wheat marked a stark contrast to previous producer acceptance of other genetically modified crops. By 2005, for example, GM canola accounted for 78 percent of all canola grown nationally. So why did farmers stand up for wheat? In Growing Resistance, Emily Eaton reveals the motivating factors behind farmer opposition to GM wheat. Yet people in oil-producing areas also lived amid flare stacks that made them ill, had trouble finding housing due to vacancy rates that were among the lowest in the country, suffered through family breakdown because of long working hours and time spent away from home, and endured spills and leaks that contaminated their land. In the summer of 2014, at the height of the boom, geographer Emily Eaton and photographer Valerie Zink travelled to oil towns across the province, from the sea-can motel built from shipping containers on the outskirts of Estevan to seismic testing sites on Thunderchild First Nation’s Sundance grounds.
