The Buddha in Your Mirror: Practical buddhism and the Search for Self
by Greg Martin Woody Hochswender Ted MorinoWhile the notion that "happiness can found within oneself" has recently become popular, Buddhism has taught for thousands of years that every person is a Buddha, or enlightened being, and has the potential for true and lasting happiness. Through real-life examples, the authors explain how adopting this outlook has positive effects on one’s health, relationships, and career, and gives new insights into world environmental concerns, peace issues, and other major social problems.

Buddhism: The First Millennium (Soka Gakkai History of Buddhism)
by Burton Watson Daisaku IkedaBeginning with the events immediately following the dark days after the death of Shakyamuni and continuing over a period of 1,000 years, this dynamic tome covers a vast and complex series of events and developments in the history of Buddhism. Through a thorough examination of its early development in India, a new light is cast on little-known aspects of Buddhist history and its relevance to the understanding of Buddhism today. Topics include the formation of the Buddhist canon, the cultural exchange between the East and West, and the spirit of the Lotus Sutra.
Hope Is a Decision
by Daisaku IkedaWhat do we do when we’ve lost all hope? Is hope something found or something made? What can one person do against the vast forces that run our world? How do we remain optimistic when the world seems to be falling apart around us? Renowned Buddhist thinker and peace activist Daisaku Ikeda has spent his life wrestling with essential questions such as these. In these intimate essays—selected from more than forty years of his works—he shares his inspirational journey to find answers and hope in troubled times. Growing up a “child of war,” Ikeda shares vivid stories that lie at the root of his lifelong dedication to creating peace: his homes burning down during the Tokyo fire bombings of World War II, his eldest brother’s death on the frontlines in Burma, his encounter with an American airman who parachuted into his neighborhood after his B29 was shot down. Ikeda’s incisive commentaries on terrorism, good and evil, aging and death give us new perspectives on approaching the world with hope. Lyrical reflections on poetry and friendship highlight how such spiritual pursuits are the wellsprings hope in dark times. Each essay suggests ways in which each of us can connect our personal search for strength, wisdom, and hope to the collective desire to bring about a just, humane, and caring society. In Hope Is a Decision, Daisaku Ikeda invites us to dig deeper into our own lives so that we can change the world around us.
Depression: Looking Up from the Stubborn Darkness
by Edward T. WelchWhere Is God in the Struggle? Looking away from despair towards hope can feel risky. What if God doesn't come through for you? What if you don't feel instantly better? Welch addresses the complex nature of depression with compassion and insight, applying the rich treasures of the gospel, and giving fresh hope to those who struggle. Originally published as Depression: A Stubborn Darkness--Light for the Path, this new edition is updated with added content. --"I cannot overstate the importance, timeliness, and helpfulness of this book. Ferguson, Senior Minister, First Presbyterian Church, Columbia, S.C.; theologian; author of The Christian Life"I have come to rely on Ed Welch and others at CCEF for guidance and insight in better understanding the issues of the soul that plague many people today. 52 Activities for Family Fun: Games and Activities with Everyday Items to Build a Closer Family
by Laura TorresIf your family is like mine, time with everyone together is becoming more and more difficult. We all have crazy schedules, and it's easy to put family time aside for soccer games, school assignments, meetings, chores, and other obligations. Now that some of my children have gone away to college, I realize how fleeting that family time can be, and that there is no substitute for time having fun together, laughing and learning. If you can set aside just one evening a week, with no other purpose than being together, your family will be greatly enriched. You don't need to plan anything fancy. An easy game, or even just some conversation starters over dinner, is enough to build happy memories. However, sometimes it's hard to think of something to do that works for all age groups and engages everyone. That is the purpose of this book. Included here are some of my family's favorite activities, from silly road trip word games to service projects to cooking contests. Organized by season, these ideas have been tested many times over and continue to bring my family many hours of fun. We play the If/Then game on birthdays, and Thanksgiving wouldn't be the same if we weren't drawing on paper plates on our heads. I hope these ideas help you plan your own family time and bring you many happy memories as well. --from the Introduction
The Organized Mom: Tips and Tricks to Find More Time
by Laura TorresHow many times, at the end of the day, have you wondered where all the time went? How many times have you wished you could just have one extra hour to yourself, or to finish a project, or to spend playing with your children? What if I told you that you just might be able to find that extra hour? According to the National Association of Professional Organizers, women spend an average of 55 minutes a day looking for stuff. 55 minutes! That is time that is much, much better spent elsewhere. To reclaim that extra hour, among other just as worthy reasons, you need to get yourself organized. This book is full of tips that can help you do that, even if your hands are full with kids, a job, a spouse, and a plethora of other commitments. These are real-world tips, from my own experience as a busy mother. I've been a stay-at-home-mom, a mom with a full-time job, a single mom, and a mom with an at-home business. At one point, I was teaching an early-morning, before-school high school class, working part-time, doing a graduate program double speed--and being a mom. Organization wasn't a hobby; it was a necessity. I've also culled tips from the experts and from my organized friends. There is not anything revolutionary here. There are tips, steps, systems, and ideas to make your life easier. Getting organized is a series of replacing bad habits with good habits, along with getting rid of clutter and keeping it away. Put all of it together, and I whole-heartedly believe you can accomplish more in a day than you ever dreamed possible. --from the Introduction

RAISING RACE CONSCIOUSNESS: Healing Racism, Sexism and Other Isms
by Audrye ArbeWhat propelled me to write this book? In addition to being nudged by Spirit and my own Inner Guidance, I took a look around. What is this fixation on race, sex, gender, religion, class that preoccupies so many of our species? Where is our plentiful joy and wonder at the magnificence of Creation? More importantly, what can we do about any lack of wonder? Who are we, anyway, and why are we here? Personally, I am fascinated by the diversity and combinations in which we humans flourish — with our multitude of talents, looks and abilities. I love our creativity, our amazingly diverse yet similar energies and vibrations. To me, this variety is something to be honored and treasured, a reflection of the artistry and abundance of Creation. Despite the beauty that exists within diversity – racial, sexual, gender, and so on -- some of us appear to feel, believe and act as if our variety is an issue, going so far as to behave inimically toward others who outwardly "look or seem different.” From where do these attitudes stem and where do these perceptions lead? Is separation along color/sex/gender/religious lines what an-yone truly desires in the core of his/her being? It is indicative of a culture with distorted ideas about race that people can even figure out what looking alike and looking different mean. How are these differences of coloration interpreted? In a culture that loved our multiplicity of being, we would have a different conception of alike and different, as well as different feelings and vibrations within ourselves. We are in a new millennium. We have the time-space-place-resonance to be the enlightened beings that we are. The choice is open to each and every one of us.
The Mother's Manual: A Spiritual and Practical Guide to Child Rearing and Motherhood
by Audrye S. ArbeWho am I and where do I come to write this book? I feel it necessary to address all aspects of motherhood, so I decided to include both the sweetness and delight plus the shadow side of motherhood in this book. Some challenging life situations occur that are vital for us to consider, so I am including some disquieting statistics. Because many women (and men) have refrained from checking within themselves or making an examination on emotional, mental, physical and spiritual planes about having children, hardships have been created, both personally and planetary.
