Criminal Justice In America (Fifth Edition)

by Bill Hayes Marshall Croddy Todd Clark

No matter who you are, crime affects your life. As a student, your school might be vandalized or your wallet stolen. Statistically, chances are good that sometime in your life you will be a crime victim. As a taxpayer, you will be required to contribute money in the fight against crime or to repair the damage it does. As a voter, you will be asked to choose candidates based in part, at least, on their views about solutions to crime. Everyone agrees that crime is a serious problem. Few agree about its causes or solutions.

Although the debate over the causes and solutions to crime will probably never end, society has evolved a criminal justice system for dealing with crime. Two areas of jurisprudence are essential to understanding this system: criminal law and criminal procedure.

Exploring Woodworking

by Fred W. Zimmerman Larry J. McWard

Exploring Woodworking provides a thorough foundation for a beginning woodworking course. This clearly written and highly illustrated text introduces students to woods and their characteristics, as well as basic woodworking techniques using both hand and power tools. Plans for a number of woodworking products are included.

The Landmark History Of The American People: From Plymouth to the Moon

by Daniel J. Boorstin Ruth F. Boorstin

This is an in-depth portrait of a great people, from their fragile origins through their struggles for independence and nationhood, their heroic efforts and sacrifices to deal with the 'organic sin’ of slavery and the preservation of the Union to its explosive economic growth and emergence as a world power and its sole superpower. Johnson discusses such contemporary topics as the politics of racism, education, Vietnam, the power of the press, political correctness, the growth of litigation, and the rising influence of women. He sees Americans as a problem-solving people and the story of America as "essentially one of difficulties being overcome by intelligence and skill, by faith and strength of purpose, by courage and persistence... Looking back on its past, and forward to its future, the auguries are that it will not disappoint humanity."

This challenging narrative and interpretation of American history by the author of many distinguished historical works is sometimes controversial and always provocative. Johnson’s views of individuals, events, themes, and issues are original, critical, and admiring, for he is, above all, a strong believer in the history and the destiny of the American people.

Heritage Studies 6 (Fourth edition): Ancient Civilizations

by Jill Blackstock Ma Elizabeth Turner Pam Frank Carol Arrington Ardt

The goal of HERITAGE STUDIES 6 is to develop student historians. The Creation Mandate, found in Genesis 1:28, provides the basis for Christian involvement in the various academic disciplines. The Creation Mandate teaches that we are to rule God's world and make culture from His creation. Fulfilling the Creation Mandate requires knowledge and skill in many areas, including in the study of history.

Multivariable Calculus (Pure and Applied Mathematics #64)

by Lawrence J. Corwin Robert J. Szczarba

Classroom-tested and lucidly written, Multivariable Calculus gives a thorough and rigorous treatment of differential and integral calculus of functions of several variables. Designed as a junior-level textbook for an advanced calculus course, this book covers a variety of notions, including continuity , differentiation, multiple integrals, line and surface integrals, differential forms, and infinite series.
Numerous exercises and examples throughout the book facilitate the student's understanding of important concepts. The level of rigor in this textbook is high; virtually every result is accompanied by a proof. To accommodate teachers' individual needs, the material is organized so that proofs can be deemphasized or even omitted. Linear algebra for n-dimensional Euclidean space is developed when required for the calculus; for example, linear transformations are discussed for the treatment of derivatives.
Featuring a detailed discussion of differential forms and Stokes' theorem, Multivariable Calculusis an excellent textbook for junior-level advanced calculus courses and it is also useful for sophomores who have a strong background in single-variable calculus. A two-year calculus sequence or a one-year honor calculus course is required for the most successful use of this textbook. Students will benefit enormously from this book's systematic approach to mathematical analysis, which will ultimately prepare them for more advanced topics in the field.

Anthropology: The Basics

by Christopher R. DeCorse Raymond Scupin

Explore the similarities and differences that characterize humanity Anthropology: The Basics provides a concise introduction to the subfields of anthropology, designed for instructors who want an overview of key concepts, to which they can add supplementary case studies and readings. Incorporating both classic and current research, authors Christopher DeCorse and Raymond Scupin lead students to examine the similarities across cultures, as well as the differences among different peoples. Exploring interactions between anthropology and other fields, Anthropology: The Basics awakens students to anthropology’s unique, holistic perspective—sparking the critical imagination that brings learning to life.

Thinking Geometrically: A Survey of Geometries (Maa Textbooks #26)

by Thomas Q. Sibley

This is a well written and comprehensive survey of college geometry that would serve a wide variety of courses for both mathematics majors and mathematics education majors. Great care and attention is spent on developing visual insights and geometric intuition while stressing the logical structure, historical development, and deep interconnectedness of the ideas.

Students with less mathematical preparation than upper-division mathematics majors can successfully study the topics needed for the preparation of high school teachers. There is a multitude of exercises and projects in those chapters developing all aspects of geometric thinking for these students as well as for more advanced students. These chapters include Euclidean Geometry, Axiomatic Systems and Models, Analytic Geometry, Transformational Geometry, and Symmetry. Topics in the other chapters, including Non-Euclidean Geometry, Projective Geometry, Finite Geometry, Differential Geometry, and Discrete Geometry, provide a broader view of geometry. The different chapters are as independent as possible, while the text still manages to highlight the many connections between topics.

The text is self-contained, including appendices with the material in Euclid s first book and a high school axiomatic system as well as Hilbert s axioms. Appendices give brief summaries of the parts of linear algebra and multivariable calculus needed for certain chapters. While some chapters use the language of groups, no prior experience with abstract algebra is presumed. The text will support an approach emphasizing dynamical geometry software without being tied to any particular software.

Regional Cases in U.S. Foreign Policy, Second Edition

by Donald M. Snow

Regional Cases in U.S. Foreign Policy is the perfect accompaniment to U.S. Foreign Policy: Back to the Water's Edge. It provides micro-level bilateral interactions among specific states—material that is often ignored or downplayed in more general treatments of the subject. Each of the seven chapters is devoted to a region of the world in which the United States conducts significant foreign policy. Each chapter features case studies of American interaction with two different countries in that region, allowing students the opportunity to compare policy interactions across—as well as within—particular regions.
