Counseling Theory And Practice

by Edward Neukrug

Developed for helping professionals, Counseling Theory and Practice explains what it means to be an effective helper, discusses foundations of classic counseling and psychotherapy theories, provides an overview of emerging theories, and gives students the opportunity to develop their own approaches to counseling and psychotherapy practice.

The book is organized into four primary sections, each addressing theoretical schools. Section 1 explores psychodynamic approaches, including psychoanalysis, Jungian therapy, and Adlerian therapy. Section 2 is devoted to existential-humanistic approaches such as existential therapy, Gestalt therapy, and person-centered counseling, while Section 3 discusses cognitive-behavioral approaches, including behavior therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, rational-emotive behavior therapy, and reality therapy. Section 4 describes post-modern therapies and examines the relatively new approaches of narrative therapy, solution-focused brief therapy, and relational cultural therapy, a form of feminist therapy. The final chapter explores a number of more recent and emerging theories.
Informative and engaging, Counseling Theory and Practice is well-suited to courses for both pre-service professionals and those already in the field.

CAESAR AND CLEOPATRA A - History by BERNARD SHAW

by An Introduction notes by A. C. WARD

As to the other plays in this volume, the application of my title is less obvious, since neither Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, nor Lady Cicely Waynflete [in Captain Brassbound’s Conversion] have any external political connection with Puritanism. The very name of Cleopatra suggests at once a tragedy of Circe, with the horrible difference that whereas the ancient myth rightly represents Circe as turning heroes into hogs, the modern romantic convention would represent her as turning hogs into heroes. Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra must needs be as intolerable to the true Puritan as it is vaguely distressing to the ordinary healthy citizen, because, after giving a faithful picture of the soldier broken down by debauchery, and the typical wanton in whose arms such men perish, Shakespeare finally strains all his huge command of rhetoric and stage pathos to give a theatrical sublimity to the wretched end of the business, and to persuade foolish spectators that the world was well lost by the twain.

The royal commission on labour in India (1931) rightly pointed out: "the term welfare as applied to the industrial workers is one which must necessarily be elastic, bearing a somewhat different interpretation in one country from another, according to the different social customs, the degree of industrialisation and educational development of the worker". Hence, this book try’s to elaborate the concepts from layman’s perspective.

Puraporul Venba Malai

by Iyyanaarithanaar

This lesson offers a brief introduction to Pura Porul Ilakkanam. Tamil grammar is broadly classified into 5 major divisions - ie the letter (sol), the word or ezhuthu , content or porul, prosody or yappu and figures of speech or ani. “Porul” is the content or the subject of any literary work. The ethics and codes governing the social and domestic life of the Tamils is largely the subject underlying ancient Tamil literature. Tamil grammarians devised the Porul Ilakkanam to codify the content of poetry. Similar to the way in which the inner universe is divided into 7 ‘tinais’ or modes, Tholkappiar, the ancient Tamil grammarian, also codified the behaviour pertaining to the external world into 7 ‘tinais’- viz. ‘vetchi’, vanji’, ‘uzhinjai’, ‘ thumbai’, ‘vaagai’, ‘kanchi’ and ‘paadaan’. ‘Pannirupadalam’ was the first grammar text to explain the various pura tinais. It was composed by the 12 disciples of Agathiyar, including Tholkappiar.Only a few verses of this text are extant today. ‘Puraporul Venba Malai’ is another grammar text on‘puram’ written later by Iyyanaarithanaar.
