Catch and Saddle

by L. P. Holmes

Death came cheap. A lot of men would have figured it a bargain to buy the deed to the Pinderlee spread for a single dollar. Clay Hanford knew better. Old man Pinderlee had gotten out while the getting was good--and Hanford was moving back in when the odds were bad. Morgan had the men, the muscle, the law, and the land all in his ruthless hands. Hanford had just the scrap of paper in his saddlevag, the guns at his side, and the bullets in his belt. It didn't add up to a fair fight--but land war never was.

Singing Wires: A Western Story

by L. P. Holmes

When word of the Pony Express being formed reached Clay Roswell in Texas, he decided to get a job as a rider. He was told his best chance for employment was along the desert stretch in Nevada Territory, so that was where he headed. Along the trail, he met two brothers, Jess and Hoke Pickard, and agreed to team up with them, at least as far as Salt Lake. They made camp one night in Weber Cañon, east of Salt Lake, but as Roswell lay in his blankets, the Pickards tried to club him to death. They stole his money and his horses and left him for dead. It took Roswell a long time to make it to Fort Churchill in Nevada Territory, and when he finally did, the Pony Express was shutting down and the only jobs available were with crews hired to string telegraph wire across the desert. And it was there in Fort Churchill that Roswell saw the Pickard brothers again, applying for work with the superintendent of the telegraph company. Roswell’s brawl with the brothers then and there made for an unlikely introduction to superintendent Jack Casement, but he liked what he saw in Roswell and offered him the job as wagon boss for the outfit. But the fight with the Pickards was not over, and conflict with Indians as well as an organized gang of hijackers would only add to the challenges now facing Roswell, a simple man looking for an honest wage.

The Gabriel Horn

by Felix Holt

In the last immense wilderness of western Kentucky--the Jackson Purchase country--the need for men who were really men was great. Big Eli qualified on every count and yet in caring for his motherless son, Little Eli, he displayed a tenderness and gentleness that any mother might envy. Only a man of Big Eli's size and strength could blow the Gabriel Horn, the hunting horn which played so important a part in the lives of those rugged individuals fighting for an existence on one of the last of the American frontiers. It was Little Eli's ambition to grow up to become a man his father could be proud of and who could in his turn come to blow the Gabriel Horn. The Gabriel Horn recounts the experiences of Big and Little Eli Wakefield in their ever-widening search for freedom from the confinements of the encroaching civilization of the 1800's. Love and romance are here in great plenty. The bound girl, Hannah Bolen, enters Big Eli's life as his rescuer, only to become so terrified of the possible results that she flees into the forest. Here is a realistic novel of the American frontier of 1818, with a great hunter for a hero, an exciting picture of frontier life and an altogether engaging love story, told with authentic detail and delightful touches of humor by a writer new to the field but old in his knowledge of the period in which he feels so thoroughly at home and at his ease.

Haxan (The Haxan Series)

by Kenneth Hoover

From the author of Quaternity: “The story of an immortal champion in an American West that never was, and so is all the truer for it” (Richard Parks, author of The Long Look). Thermopylae. Masada. Agincourt. And now, Haxan, New Mexico Territory, circa 1874. Through a sea of time and dust, in places that might never be, or can’t become until something is set right, there are people destined to travel. Forever. Marshal John Marwood is one of these men. Taken from a place he called home, he is sent to fight an eternal war. It never ends, because the storm itself, this unending conflict, makes the world we know a reality. Along with all the other worlds waiting to be born. Or those that were born, but died like a guttering candle in eternal night . . . The first in a series, Haxan is Lonesome Dove meets The Punisher—real, gritty, violent, and blatantly uncompromising. “A mixture of western and urban fantasy, with a cold, moody atmosphere that makes us want to put on a sweater. The author leaves the door open for a sequel, but, given the kind of life Marwood lives, it could be set anywhere, or anytime.” —Booklist

Quaternity

by Kenneth Mark Hoover

“A poetic, doom-laden Western soaked in blood and frenzy. This Cormac McCarthyesque terror fantasia of a prequel both frames and outstrips Hoover’s Haxan” (Gemma Files, author of Spectral Evidence). Before he became a US federal marshal in Haxan, John Marwood rode with a band of killers up and down the Texas-Mexico border. Led by Abram Botis, an apostate from the Old Country, this gang of thirteen killers searches for the fabled golden city of Cibola, even riding through the barren, blood-soaked plains of Comancheria. In this violent crucible of blood, dust, and wind, Marwood discovers a nightmarish truth about himself, and conquers the silent, wintry thing coiled inside him. “After 2014’s brilliantly brutal Haxan, Hoover revisits his nightmarish American West . . . A western of blood and violence with a marked lack of redemption tinged with hints of the fantastic, this is a pitch-black western that resonates.” —Publishers Weekly “With a voice both sparse and poetic, Hoover takes on the hoary cliches of Western fiction and dismantles them one by one. In Quaternity, Hoover’s unflinching look at evil will challenge everything you know about yourself and the world we live in.” —Melissa Lenhardt, author of Heresy “Hoover does it again. Quaternity starts with a bang and doesn’t quit until a satisfying conclusion. This is my kind of weird west. Love it!” —Jennifer Brozek, author of The Last Days of Salton Academy
