Arm of the Bandit: The Trial of Frank James

by Johnny D. Boggs

Outlaws Frank and Jesse James eluded capture for sixteen years and became folk heroes. In 1882, after Jesse was killed, Frank surrendered and faced trial for murder. But how could Missouri convict a man so popular that the governor almost needed an appointment to visit him in jail? The James brothers are icons of Western Americana, but little has been heard about the circus-like trial that decided if Frank James was guilty of cold-blooded murder. With great care, Boggs has recreated the least-known saga of the James brothers' lives-the trial of Frank James.

Bloody Newton

by Johnny D. Boggs

A new standalone novel based on one of the greatest gunfights in American history from one of the most popular and respected writers of Western fiction, multiple award–winning author, Johnny D. Boggs.BLOODY NEWTON A decade before the legendary Gunfight at OK Corral, there was a much bloodier showdown with a much bigger body count—and Wichita Herald reporter Cindy Bagwell was there to see it all. At first, the fledgling journalist had no idea why her boss would send her to what hardly even passes for a town. But Texans, including trail boss Gary Hardee and his sons, are bringing longhorns to Kansas. And Newton aims to take over the cattle market. Hardee has his hands full—and that&’s before he reaches Newton, where Texans and Kansans don&’t get along. Tensions escalate from fisticuffs to brawling to fatal shootings in short order. But that&’s just a warm-up. On August 19, 1871, in a gambling room at Tuttle&’s dance hall in Hide Park, this powder keg of bad blood and bitterness between two rival groups explodes—with one young reporter, a restaurant owner, and Hardee&’s sons caught in the middle . . . This is the story of the deadliest gunfight in the American West. Of the passionate men and women who fought for a piece of the American Dream. And of the ultimate price they&’d have to pay . . . &“Boggs is unparalleled in evoking the gritty reality of the Old West.&” —The Shootist &“Johnny D. Hard Winter: A Western Story

by Johnny D. Boggs

Weather and creaking joints permitting, Jim Hawkins could be found every weekend sitting in that rocker right outside the Manix Store in Augusta, whittling and spitting. But Jim Hawkins didn't say much. Few knew what age Jim Hawkins might own up to, but Big Clem Ellis said he'd heard that Jim Hawkins was fifty years old, which might explain why his hair was so gray, or why he needed a scarred hickory cane to push himself out of that rocking chair, especially when it got cold, and it got bitter cold in Augusta. Especially the past winter.Folks figured the Chinooks would never get there, and the warm winds didn't arrive in time for many farmers. Come spring, homesteaders by the score gave up, saying good-bye to their mortgages, the unforgiving wind, and forlorn dreams. Still, Jim Hawkins said hardly anything. Ever. That's how Henry Lancaster felt. That all changed when Jim Hawkins took Henry along on a scouting trip. The man who so rarely talked told his grandson how it was during that winter he could so clearly remember, the winter of 1866. Now that was a hard winter, harder than anyone living could remember, and harder than any winter since

Longhorns East

by Johnny D. Boggs

From nine-time Spur Award–winning Western author Johnny D. Boggs comes the incredible story of the biggest, longest, wildest cattle drive in America&’s history—from the heart of Texas to New York City. . . . LONGHORNS EAST Tom Candy Ponting was no ordinary trail boss. He didn&’t smoke, chew, cuss, or even carry a gun. Unlike his competitors, he learned how to herd cows on a farm back in England—and how to handle cowboys in bareknuckle prizefights. But his skills and know-how were really put to the test when he accepts a bet he might live to regret: lead a cattle drive from Texas to New York City. Not one to back down on a dare, Ponting assembles the motliest crew of cowboys ever seen—Texans, Englishmen, Mexicans, Freemen, Cherokee—and charts a course through the unfriendliest country to move seven hundred head of cattle, never easy in the best of times. Along the way, they&’ll cross railroads and rustlers, hucksters and hustlers, with detours and dead ends aplenty. But if they succeed, the team will make more than just a whole lot of money. They will make history. . . . Inspired by the real-life adventures of legendary cattleman Tom Candy Ponting, Longhorns East takes readers on an unforgettable journey as big and bold as the America itself. &“Boggs is unparalleled in evoking the gritty reality of the Old West.&” —The Shootist &“Johnny Boggs has produced another instant page-turner. . . . South by Southwest: A Western Story

by Johnny D. Boggs

From a Spur Award-winning author comes a thrilling tale of faked deaths, runaway slaves, and revenge amid the Civil War. The only way to escape the purgatory that is the Florence Stockade is to die, so on February 3, 1865, Zebulon Hogan dies. Corporal Favour and Private Gardenhire, the only two soldiers of the 16th Wisconsin healthy enough to tote Zeb’s wasted-away ninety pounds, wrap him in a dirty, stinking, and damp blanket, and carry him to the Dead House. It was typhoid pneumonia that got him, the soldiers told the Confederate guards. Zeb is buried in the prisoners’ cemetery, but the grave is shallow and it’s likely that the hogs rooting around will soon be sinking their teeth into his rotting flesh. Then, young Ebenezer Chase, a runaway slave, sees the shadowy figure of a hand clawing through the muddy dirt over that grave, like it’s reaching to pull anybody nearby into the deepest part of Hades. Ebenezer’s first impulse is to scream, to warn the soldiers in the Stockade of what is happening, but nothing comes out of his throat. Zeb Hogan has a mission far beyond escaping from the Stockade. He has sworn an oath to other prisoners to pursue the traitorous Sergeant Ben DeVere, who traded blue for gray and is now a Confederate in Vicksburg, and kill him. The problem for Zeb is that he knows nothing of the surrounding country and is likely to be intercepted. Ebenezer, despite being a runaway slave and no less vulnerable to capture, does know the country. Perhaps they can join forces to get where each wants to go . . .

Whiskey Kills: A Killstraight Story

by Johnny D. Boggs

His Arrows Fly Straight into the Hearts of His Enemies was the Comanche name given him by his father. But the Pale Eyes gave him a new name, Daniel Killstraight, and that was the name by which he was known after his return to the reservation of the Kowas, Comanches, and Apaches. He became a native police officer, called a Metal Shirt by the Indians. When Toyarocho, drunk on contraband whiskey, rolls over onto the body of his four-year-old daughter, smothering her to death, Leviticus Ellenbogen, the new Indian agent, is appalled and wants Killstraight to find out who supplied Toyarocho with the whiskey. If it was a white man, Killstraight cannot make an arrest, but he can collect evidence. There is one clue. The whiskey Toyarocho had drunk was in a ginger beer bottle manufactured by Cox and Coursey Bottling Works of Dallas, Texas. In the course of his investigation, Killstraight finds additional instances of whiskey running among the Indians, all of it in the same kind of bottles. But Killstraight is working against impediments other than not being able to arrest a white man. Teepee That Stands Alone, the dead girl’s grandfather, perhaps knows something, but he will not share it with a Metal Shirt. If Killstraight leaves the reservation in the course of his investigation, he will have no authority at all. And the white men involved undertake to have Killstraight jailed for numerous infractions against territorial and federal laws as an opening strategy. There is an even more certain way of making sure that Killstraight’s investigation is stopped--permanently--and that is by killing him.
