Backpackers can find complete solitude, wildlife, and some of North America's most outstanding scenery. Idaho's mountains also boast great weather--fewer thunderstorms than the central Rockies, less rain than Oregon and Washington, and cooler summer temperatures than California. Backpacking Idaho takes you to what author Doug Lorain calls a "Shangri-la" for backpackers. In the craggy Selkirk Mountains you'll find lush forests, small cirque lakes, and jagged granite peaks. Watch for ospreys, river otters, and belted kingfishers in the swift Selway River. Explore hundreds of miles of trails in the gently rolling forested hills in north-central Idaho, or head to Hell's Canyon, the deepest gorge in North America, where you'll find both alpine tundra and cactus-studded desert.

The Basics: A Curriculum for Co-Occurring Psychiatric and Substance Disorders Volume I & II (Second Edition)

by Rhonda Mckillip

Is integrated treatment a priority? A requirement? Do you attend lots of training? Buy lots of books? Yet find it a challenge to know exactly what to say to a psychiatric consumer with an addictive disorder or an addiction client with a psychiatric disorder? THE BASICS, SECOND EDITION is the complete solution with detailed lesson content and handouts for groups, topics and information for individual sessions, and comprehensive cross training education for mental health and chemical dependency professionals. Integrating your treatment program, providing dual diagnoses educational material, and cross-training your staff doesn't get any easier than this! THE BASICS eliminates gaps. When a publication focuses first on training the professional, the professional must transfer the knowledge into a useful format and into conversational language. THE BASICS is the treatment by first providing ready to present material. A professional is then simultaneously cross-trained on psychiatric and substance disorders by learning literally how to provide treatment to the dually diagnosed population. With over 1,600 references, THE BASICS is a Consensus-Based Best Practice. It is specifically designed to match the evidence based best practices consistent with the CCISC Model (Minkoff & Cline), Stages of Change Model (Prochaska & DiClemente), and Motivational Interviewing (Miller & Rollnick). Treatment participants benefit by consistent psychoeducation in groups, in 1:1's, and throughout a system of care. Group participants benefit by practicing skills with the use of reproducible Worksheets. Professionals benefit by a detailed curriculum written in a "conversational style." Administration and staff benefit by drastically reducing hours devoted to program development. Direct service providers benefit by a continuity of material for group and 1x1's.

Becoming a Visible Man

by Jamison Green

The entry to this book is the opening of a college lecture. Green guides a dialogue with students, leading them to a new way of perceiving sex vs. gender vs. sexual orientation. At a later point, he uses a computer analogy: hardware is sex (the body), gender is software (the soul or heart or mind), then the operating system is the congruence or lack of between the two. What if your hardware is a PC running Windows but your software is all MAC based? How long do you suffer in silence before taking action to have them be the same, work together, and feel whole? Green skillfully weaves through multiple related topics of transsexuality, with the focus on female to male, a rapidly growing percentage of the community. He includes current history of the movement to create community rather than isolated individuals, a community far behind its opposite of male to female people. He cites the slower advances in surgical techniques, plus the unwillingness of the "System" to grant them entry. Green, like many others, is not satisfied with the Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association's Standards of Care, which sets the "rules" and timelines of processes that most Gender Identity Clinics follow. Green found himself not only transitioning into a male body, but into an activist role. He writes about issues related to hormones, explains surgery options and techniques, social and family ramifications, fears and facing discrimination and bigotry, emotions, sexuality, the push-pull desires of just blending in and being a "guy in the crowd" vs. a spokesman and advocate to further advance transsexual acceptance into mainstream society.

Beginning Mindfulness

by Andrew Weiss

As a teacher of meditation, Andrew Weiss found that students responded best when he broke down the process of mindfulness into discrete and progressive steps. Knowing that most people had little time to devote to meditation, he also made it his priority to teach the direct application of mindfulness to daily life. Through the years, he outlined his simple steps in a series of handouts that form the basis of this book. Intended for laypeople practicing in their work and family lives without the luxury of long meditation retreats, Beginning Mindfulness is deeply rooted in Buddhist practice but remains unbound by any particular Buddhist tradition. Combining teachings from Korean Zen Master Srung Sanh, Vietnamese Zen monk Thich Nhat Hanh, and insight, or vipassana, meditation, Weiss skillfully blends these traditions with Hindu yogic methods to create a meditation manual that is both practical and inspiring.
