The Final Cut

by Robert Westbrook

"THE CUTTERS' CODE 1. IT IS FORBIDDEN FOR A CUTTER TO HAVE A ZOE IMPLANT. 2. IT IS FORBIDDEN FOR A CUTTER TO SELL OR GIVE AWAY ZOE FOOTAGE TO OUTSIDE PARTIES. 3. IT IS FORBIDDEN TO MIX FOOTAGE' FROM TWO DIFFERENT ZOE IMPLANTS OR TO CREATE NEW FOOTAGE WITH THE AID OF COMPUTERS." Alan Hackman is a "cutter" who must follow this code. Zoe implants are placed in the brains of fetuses in the womb and record their memories from birth to death. Cutters shape these recordings into appropriate films to use at "rememories" which have taken the place of memorial services. Of course, all unpleasant or embarrassing memories are to be erased. But it is important that a cutter not have a Zoe implant for obvious reasons. People with implants should be informed of this when they reach adulthood, but sometimes there's a slip.... This book, adapted from the movie starring Robin Williams, discusses the many decisions and uncertainties in Alan's life. While sorting through the memories of strangers, he is plagued by his own clouded memory from his boyhood, a guilty secret that haunts him. Then, while cutting the recording of a wealthy, powerful, and corrupt man, he sees a face from his own past and becomes obsessed with finding the answer that will set him free at last. This novel is fun to read and, if you have watched the film without the aid of a narrator, it clears up some questions. It also is a good jumping-off point for some interesting ethical discussion. Would you want your memories to be recorded and seen by others? How would knowing this was happening affect the way you lived your life? Is it better to remember someone through his own memories or through yours? Enjoy.

The Blind Search (Jesse Falkenstein #8)

by Lesley Egan

[From the dust jacket flaps:] Jesse Falkenstein was a prosperous Los Angeles lawyer who didn't need to waste his time playing private eye for some clients who didn't have a legal leg to stand on--or even much money to make it worth his while. But the Lanning case was different. Two nice people had brought up an abandoned child for six years, only to see her legally kidnapped by her unfit young mother, who supposedly had had a sudden change of heart. Something seemed wrong about the case from the beginning--from what Falkenstein could learn, Nonie Johnson just wasn't the maternal type. Her latest job had been at the Tropico Club, a sleazy topless bar, and her friends there claimed she had been about to ditch one boyfriend and take off on a Caribbean cruise with another. And then she had suddenly dropped out of sight. So far, the search for Nonie Johnson had yielded nothing but a series of wild goose chases. And when her former boyfriend turns up murdered, Falkenstein begins to suspect that there is more involved than a simple case of child custody. He had to find Nonie Johnson fast, and he was going to need help. Fortunately, he did have two aces up his sleeve: a brother-in-law on the L.A.P.D. who might be able to sniff out the truth in some very orthodox ways, and some rather unorthodox psychic acquaintances who had their own ways of searching out clues.

Aground

by Charles Williams

From the Book Jacket: A yacht has vanished under mysterious circumstances. Involved are the woman who owns it, the charter captain who undertakes to find it, and two desperate men who are intimately connected with its disappearance and with the explosive cargo aboard, which they are committed to delivering without benefit of law. From these ingredients Charles Williams concocts one of the superior suspense stories which his increasingly large and avid public has come to expect. Again he shows his mastery of this exacting field of fiction, his ability to create believable characters, and his swift narrative pace. And again in evidence is his special affection for the sea in all its moods. As Anthony Boucher, in The New York Times Book Review, said of Williams' most recent novel, The Sailcloth Shroud, here is "... a fine light novel of excitement, spirited, fresh, and satisfying."
