Tweedlioop

by Stanley Schmidt

Tweedlioop was on Earth as part of his training as a potential heir to the ruler of his planet, many light years away. When the ship that brought him crashed and Tweedlioop was the only survivor, he was set at the mercy of Earth and its inhabitants. Some were kind and understanding toward him. Bill Nordstrom saved him from wolves in the Alaskan wild; Danni, a smart, sympathetic lawyer, battled the authorities for Tweedlioop's custody, and her daughter Laurie became Tweedlioop's one true friend. They all wanted to help Tweedlioop return to his people. But the U.S. government didn't. They trapped Tweedlioop, to test him, and to hold him hostage. They planned to trade him for the key to his people's stardrive. If his friends were quick and sharp, Tweedlioop would not remain a pawn in a deadly game against his powerful elders. If not, when the ship came it would be too late... for all of Earth, and for Tweedlioop.

And Jack Cull knew he must escape from it. Here is the story of how his escape was attempted...and how he found the truth of this particular Hell.

Particle Theory

by Edward Bryant

A collection of many of Ed's best works, including two Nebula Award winning short stories. Because of Ed's financial needs, almost all the profits from this book go directly to Ed. Donations to help with Ed's medical and other financial needs are also most appreciated via www.FriendsOfEd.org. Thank you! "The stories in his collection Particle Theory showed me that science could be used metaphorically to illuminate human experience, and that the personal could reinforce the "big ideas" rather than compete with them. I discovered him when I was in college, at the same time I first started reading writers like William Gibson and Gene Wolfe and John Crowley. They all expanded my ideas of what SF could do, but the one whose influence on my work is clearest is Bryant." --Ted Chiang

No Earthly Sunne

by Margaret Ball

Music can bridge the Worlds... (This is not necessarily a good thing...) Long ago, in an English country mansion next to a deep, dark wood, Wicket Kit Arundel devised a masque, a musical "entertainment" to be performed on the eve of Midsummer's Night 1594. It was supposed to be a quest for the perfect music, a mystic bridge to ultimate knowledge. What actually crossed the bridge was the Queen of Faerie. Entranced by his music, she has taken him away, leaving Kit's true love Eleanor bereft and mad with grief. In 1994 lives one Ellen Ainsley, a master programmer, erstwhile musician, and a very confused woman. After collapsing in the middle of an important recital, Ellen has given up singing the music of the 16th century, given up music altogether - it makes her dizzy, makes her lose contact with the real world, makes her feel like a different person... Then one day she is approached by a strangely beautiful young man who, almost against her will, persuades her to fly to England and there perform a masque composed by the infamous "Wicked Kit." Every four hundred years the spheres of Earth and Faerie join together - and once again the Queen of Faerie is about to rob Eleanor of all that gives life meaning.

Pigs Don't Fly: But Dragons Do... (Unexpected Dragon #1)

by Mary Brown

"I was a huge lump of grease, wobbling from foot to foot like ill-set aspic," confesses Summerdai, the heroine of this improbable charmer with the equally improbable title. Because of her girth, the 17-year-old Summer was passed over to replace her mother as the town prostitute. Equipped with a few supplies, a small dowry and a rather ugly ring left by her mysterious father, she sets out. But the ring is actually a bit of unicorn horn that warns her of danger and, most importantly, allows her to communicate with animals. In quick succession she picks up a ratty dog; a badly used horse; a starved turtle; a wounded pigeon; a man who lost both sight and memory after a bump on the head; and a rather curious little pig with tiny bat wings. The seven of them head south to look for the homes of horse, pigeon and man, during which Summer gains much self-confidence and loses much weight while the small pig/bat gets larger, wiser, more mysterious and more lovable. Funny, moving and always unpredictable, Brown's ( The Unlikely Ones ) incredible journey may disappoint readers looking for established genre formulas but for those more adventurous and independent sorts, it is a find.
