by Brian Little

Susan Cain, Autorin des New York Times-Bestsellers Still.

Memories of Magical Waters

by Paul Quarrington Gord Deval

Author Gord Deval is the grand "old guy" of sport fishing in Canada. Few anglers can match him when it comes to his familiarity with trout and fly fishing. Internationally known, he holds countless bait and fly casting records. Canadian and North American champion, he has represented Canada 32 times in North American and World competitions. Memories of Magical Waters contains a richness of fishing lore related to Deval’s experiences on numerous streams, rivers and lakes in Ontario and Quebec. Throughout his extensive outdoor reminiscences are many insights into fish habitats, fishing "how tos" and general insider tips on lures and casting techniques. Deval’s fishing adventures of over fifty years take the reader to such exceptional trout waters as the Ganaraska River in Ontario, the Broadback River in Quebec, Lake Simcoe and many almost inaccessible waters within Ontario’s Land O’ Lakes, Haliburton, Muskoka and the Kawarthas, and streams closer to urban centres. His experiences include ice fishing and stream fishing, as well as fishing on open waters. As an angler, he has "wet a line" with a veritable "who’s who" of fishermen past and present.

Memory and Learning in Plants (Signaling and Communication in Plants)

by Guenther Witzany Monica Gagliano Frantisek Baluska

This book assembles recent research on memory and learning in plants. Organisms that share a capability to store information about experiences in the past have an actively generated background resource on which they can compare and evaluate coming experiences in order to react faster or even better. This is an essential tool for all adaptation purposes. Such memory/learning skills can be found from bacteria up to fungi, animals and plants, although until recently it had been mentioned only as capabilities of higher animals. With the rise of epigenetics the context dependent marking of experiences on the genetic level is an essential perspective to understand memory and learning in organisms. Plants are highly sensitive organisms that actively compete for environmental resources. They assess their surroundings, estimate how much energy they need for particular goals, and then realize the optimum variant. They take measures to control certain environmental resources. They perceive themselves and can distinguish between ‘self’ and ‘non-self’. They process and evaluate information and then modify their behavior accordingly. The book will guide scientists in further investigations on these skills of plant behavior and on how plants mediate signaling processes between themselves and the environment in memory and learning processes.

Memphis Zoo

by Robert W. Dye

What started over a century ago with an orphaned bear tied to a tree in Overton Park has grown into one of the nation's top zoos. The Memphis Zoo, which attracts more than one million visitors each year, is nationally recognized not only as a tourist attraction but also for its giant panda research, captive breeding programs, and efforts to reintroduce endangered species into the wild. Established in 1906 by the Memphis Park Commission, the zoo has become a Memphis institution. It seems like everyone in Memphis has an Elvis story, but just as many Memphians have memories of the zoo and attractions like the Lion House, Monkey Island, or the free one-ring circus. The zoo has been fortunate to have many devoted staff members and volunteers over the years, and through hard work and dedication, they have built a first-class institution--not only for the animals but for the families, children, and all patrons who visit the zoo every day.
