Multimodal Management of Canine Osteoarthritis (Manson Ser.)

by Steven M. Fox

Multimodal Management of Canine Osteoarthritis, Second Edition takes an evidence-based approach to the canine patient with osteoarthritis, pursuing the objective of the best available medicine by a variety of means: multiple drugs, agents, adjuncts and delivery methods. Appreciating that surgical intervention may initially be required, particularly for stabilizing a joint, the major focus in this work is the conservative management of osteoarthritis. A clear and visual approach is taken with the overlapping of two three-pointed triangles of management: medical and non-medical. The completely updated new edition offers a major new chapter on Regenerative Medicine in collaboration with Drs Sherman Canapp and Brittany Jean Carr. It is recommended for any small animal veterinary practitioner, as well as researchers and students of the RCVS CertAVP.

Multiple Sequence Alignments: Which Program Fits My Data?

by Theodor Sperlea

This book is a practical guide for biologists who use multiple sequence alignments (MSAs) for their data analysis and are looking for a comprehensive overview of the many different programs. Despite their important role in data analysis, there is uncertainty among researchers about exactly how MSA programs work - not to mention how and why the different analyzes lead to different results. Which program is the right one for evaluating my data and how can I ensure that I have drawn all relevant findings from the alignments? This book offers helpful explanations and background information without requiring extensive bioinformatics knowledge and slowly introduces the reader to the topic. In the first part of the book, the possible fields of application as well as the formats that are usually produced by MSA programs are described in detail. The central algorithms as well as the internal processes of the most common MSA programs of the past and the present are also explained in an uncomplicated manner in greater detail. The second part of the book is a detailed, data-based comparison between MSA programs, which is intended to help you decide which program to use for your next alignment.

Multiple Sequenzalignments: Welches Programm passt zu meinen Daten?

by Theodor Sperlea

Multisensory Object Perception in the Primate Brain

by Marcus Johannes Naumer Jochen Kaiser

Traditionally, a large proportion of perceptual research has assumed a specialization of cortical regions for the processing of stimuli in a single sensory modality. Perception in everyday life, however, usually consists of inputs from multiple sensory channels. Recently the question of how the brain integrates multisensory information has become the focus of a growing number of neuroscientific investigations. This work has identified both multisensory integration regions and crossmodal influences in brain areas traditionally thought to be specific to one sensory modality. Furthermore, several factors have been identified that enhance integration such as spatio-temporal stimulus coincidence and semantic congruency. Multisensory Object Perception in the Primate Brain elucidates the mechanisms of multisensory integration of object-related information with a focus on the visual, auditory, and tactile sensory modalities. Evidence is presented in four sections: methodological considerations, audio-visual processing, visuo-tactile processing, and plasticity, and includes studies in both human and nonhuman primates at different levels of analysis. Studies range from intracranial electrophysiological recordings to non-invasive electro- or magnetoencephalography, functional magnetic resonance imaging, behavioral approaches, and computational modeling.

Multispecies Dialogues: Doing Philosophy with Animals, Children, the Sea and Others

by Eva Meijer

In Multispecies Dialogues Eva Meijer develops a new understanding of the concept ‘dialogue’, which includes embodied, material and spatial interaction. Meijer does not do this alone: each chapter of the book is devoted to a dialogue, or set of dialogues – with street dog Olli, a community of former lab mice, amphibian neighbours, the North Sea, and many other beings. Taking multispecies dialogues seriously is a way to do justice to more-than-human agency and to become more worldly in a time dominated by humans. Rethinking the model of the dialogue also opens up new ways of doing philosophy in multispecies world, which is urgently needed to address the ecological, political and philosophical problems of our time.

Multivariate Statistical Machine Learning Methods for Genomic Prediction

by José Crossa Osval Antonio Montesinos López Abelardo Montesinos López

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 licenseThis open access book brings together the latest genome base prediction models currently being used by statisticians, breeders and data scientists. It provides an accessible way to understand the theory behind each statistical learning tool, the required pre-processing, the basics of model building, how to train statistical learning methods, the basic R scripts needed to implement each statistical learning tool, and the output of each tool. To do so, for each tool the book provides background theory, some elements of the R statistical software for its implementation, the conceptual underpinnings, and at least two illustrative examples with data from real-world genomic selection experiments. Lastly, worked-out examples help readers check their own comprehension. The book will greatly appeal to readers in plant (and animal) breeding, geneticists and statisticians, as it provides in a very accessible way the necessary theory, the appropriate R code, and illustrative examples for a complete understanding of each statistical learning tool. In addition, it weighs the advantages and disadvantages of each tool.

Mungo

by Rosalie Fry

There comes a time when you've got to let them go free or they'll never learn to look after themselves," old Mrs. Moffatt warned Aunt Hilda. And that was the start of Richie's freedom to roam the wild Scottish coast near the hotel where they were living, for until then Aunt Hilda had been afraid to let him go anywhere alone. Soon Richie found a "special place"--a cliff hidden by overhanging heather, from which he could watch an inlet that he liked to think of as a secret bay. One day, as he lay on top of the cliff, Richie saw an alarmingly long creature stretching out into the sea like a reef of rocks--"like a kind of giant lizard with the longest neck in the world," thought Richie--a silly, friendly smile on its face. This was Mungo, last and gentlest of the ancient sea monsters. Soon Richie learned that Mungo liked to eat sea greens and potato crisps; more important, he noticed that a certain "clong" sound from across the water summoned Mungo out to sea, toward the island of Muckle Craig. In one of Rosalie K. Fry's most entertaining stories, Mungo eventually takes Richie on the greatest adventure of his life.
