Radar Entomology

by Don Reynolds Alistair Drake

Many of the world's most serious agricultural pests are highly migratory. Through the use of special-purpose radars we are provided with insights into their movement and how they learn about and navigate through their environment. This text examines the behaviour and regional variations of these species, as well as the altitude of migration, concentration of insects in layers and how they respond to large and small-scale wind systems. The book relates radar observation of insect movement to complementary and competing methodologies and surveys its capabilities and limitations. It also deals with the applications of these findings in the management and forecasting of both pest and beneficial insects, and is an essential reference for those working in agricultural entomology and pest management.

Radiant: Farm Animals Up Close and Personal

by Traer Scott

Gregarious or shy, curious or placid, playful or retiring, all the animals in Traer Scott's newest collection have one thing in common: a sparkling personality! This whimsical, soulful, and personal photo collection focuses on the lives of the farm animals we often take for granted. Scott introduces us to barnyard animals both familiar and lesser known, from cows, pigs, sheep, and chickens to Dolly the wooly llama, Bianca the Sicilian miniature donkey, Percy the Indian peafowl, and Justice the yak. Some of the animals are kept as pets; others are denizens of farm sanctuaries that Scott has visited. She shares her anecdotes about a Texas longhorn steer whose best friends are a trio of goats, a turkey who likes to snack on grapes and watermelon, and many others. Lively captions provide information on each breed, to round out this enchanting tribute to our four-legged (and winged) friends from the farm.

Thus begins the tale by Stephen Bodio, a lover of birds and nature, of the incredible connection between man and birds of prey. Falconry can be traced back over four thousand years and, as Bodio says, "it is amazing that the practice did not die out soon afterward when its first adherents starved. ” With a new introduction by Helen MacDonald, A Rage For Falcons not only shares the history of falconry, but shows the personal side in a way only Bodio can share. With masterful prose and breathtaking imagery, you not only understand how falconry has lasted, but why. As Bodio so appropriately notes in his introduction: "To understand falconry, you must understand the nature of the relationship between man and bird. ” In A Rage For Falcons, Bodio explores this incredible relationship and how it has affected him as a person. Never has such a personal touch been put on a sport that has lasted generations, which many people still do not have a grasp of. That’s what makes Bodio so great. Rags and the Adventure with Mrs Fox

by A. M. Houston

Rags is blossoming into a charming character who simply adores the company of people. He’s always eager to greet anyone he encounters with a joyful ‘hello’. On one memorable occasion, Rags approached a man by his garden gate, eager to make a new friend. The man, touched by Rags’ friendly gesture, gratefully expressed, ‘Thank you for being in the world.’ If Rags could talk, he’d surely have responded, ‘You’re welcome’. Rags still likes to find things on his walks. Rags shows me things that capture his interest. Amazingly, it is usually things that I would never have noticed and then I find them interesting too. I have learned that Rags has a special bark when he is on the trail of a fox. I think he really wants me to know how clever he is to have picked up the scent. This story about the adventure with Mrs Fox is true. Rags did search out the fox in his garden. We did find Mrs Fox in the woods watching us as we watched her. On another day, we really did find the baby foxes playing ‘catch’ in the woods. The scene with the chicken, well that was also true. Mrs Fox had to feed her babies and as the story shows, she was very good at that.
