Twosomes: Love Poems from the Animal Kingdom
by Lee Wildish Marilyn SingerDo animals celebrate Valentine's Day? Nobody knows for sure. But this funny (and punny) little book imagines how some of them declare their love, affection, or friendship any day of the year."Nice to Meetcha! You smell delish!/Wanna share my water dish?" So asks one tail-thumping dog to another. Whereas a courting dolphin sings, "Come, leap with me and be my wife./You're the porpoise of my life." Ranging from dogs and cats and other pets to some you wouldn't want to pet, such as sharks and porcupines, acclaimed poet Marilyn Singer's captivating couplets and Lee Wildish's expressively humorous illustrations provide a Valentine's Day gift for kids who wouldn't be caught dead being lovey-dovey.From the Hardcover edition.
Tyger: Wild Stallion of the Badlands
by Les SellnowCan a horse, born and raised in a domestic setting, adapt and survive when turned free in the wild? That is the intriguing question posed in Tyger, Wild Stallion of the Badlands. Tyger is fiction, based on fact. The setting is the rugged North Dakota Badlands in Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Chronicled are the adventures of a young, domesticated colt that is turned free among the wild horses of the Badlands to survive as best he can. A group of Badlands area ranchers deeply interested in the well-being of the wild horses, led by Skip and Sandy Carpenter, ex-rodeo contestants, petition the U.S. Park Service to allow them to purchase a colt which will be released in the Badlands. Their goal is to provide an infusion of new blood to prevent inbreeding. The Carpenters are parents of a little horse-loving girl named Janie. The ranchers are given approval and buy Tyger, a young stallion, from Tom and Anne McWilliams of Minnesota. The adventures of Tyger, first as a young colt growing up in Minnesota and, later, as a maturing stallion in the Badlands run the gamut from heart rending to dramatic. The adults and the young girl become ever more involved emotionally as they monitor the colt's progress from afar during horseback treks to the Badlands. Tyger ultimately battles his way to the position of dominant stallion, but then suffers a serious injury. He is attacked in his weakened state by another powerful stallion and nearly killed. Taken to the Carpenter ranch, he is cared for by Skip and young Janie, who comes to believe that the stallion belongs to her. Tyger recovers, but has limited use of one rear leg. The humans face a decision. Should he be kept in safety at the ranch, or should he be allowed to return to his old haunts, handicapped though he is, to challenge the stallion which defeated him and stole his band of mares? Throughout, the adults must come to grips with the fact that they are responsible for having placed a domesticated horse in an environment that might cost him his life.

Ubac and Me: A Life of Love and Adventure with a French Mountain Dog
by Cédric Sapin-DefourThe international sensation, a charming and moving memoir of a dog&’s transformative love.&“Having a dog as company makes nothing feel excessive—not time or space. It&’s not even about passing time, but being of it.&” A tiny ad in a local newspaper catches Cedric Sapin-Defour&’s eye: a litter of Bernese Mountain Dog puppies need homes. A lonely, single gym teacher and mountain climber in the French Alps, Cedric visits the dogs and immediately falls for a puppy with a blue collar who steps over his siblings to get to him. Named Ubac, French for the north side of the mountain—the rainy, cloudy slope—the puppy quickly upends Cedric&’s life. They go on hikes together, taking to the hills and exploring, forging a bond that brings joy and a sense of fulfillment and adventure. They brave the world together, hate to be apart, crave the mountains and the natural world; they protect each other. Over the course of thirteen years, their pack expands to include Mathilde, Cedric&’s wife, and more dogs. Ubac and Me is an intimate meditation on a joyous life lived too fast, the aching pain of separation, and the transformative effect of unconditional love. A dog named for the rainy side of the mountain is an inspiring lesson in how walking the rocky, cloudy hills together can bring the greatest light, the sunniest joys, even if the shared journey is unbearably short.
