Words of Love: A Friend for Little Ones When They Need it the Most

by Jake Biggin

A helping hand for difficult moments, this book is about the big things little ones face, and a little dog who wants to help. This is the first in a series of four books created by author and illustrator Jake Biggin. The topics covered are Words of Love, Words of Wisdom, Words of Comfort, and Words of Kindness. The series was created because of the author’s desire to help his children navigate this strange post-pandemic world, and with the understanding that even little ones have their own questions, worries, and challenges. But the answers aren’t always clear. Each book in this enchanting series looks at different worries kids face, from feelings of self-doubt to how to make friends. Little readers will find a loving and loyal companion and mentor in this little dog. He is the friend we all wished we had growing up and one we want to overcome life’s ups and downs with. With charming illustrations throughout, the magic of this first book in the series is that it captures the thoughts and feelings we all have, throughout our lives, and offers supportive words of love, making it the perfect gift for anyone looking for a little hope and comfort.

Workforce Needs in Veterinary Medicine

by Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy and Global Affairs Division on Earth and Life Studies Board on Higher Education and Workforce Committee to Assess the Current and Future Workforce Needs in Veterinary Medicine

The U.S. veterinary medical profession contributes to society in diverse ways, from developing drugs and protecting the food supply to treating companion animals and investigating animal diseases in the wild. In a study of the issues related to the veterinary medical workforce, including demographics, workforce supply, trends affecting job availability, and capacity of the educational system to fill future demands, a National Research Council committee found that the profession faces important challenges in maintaining the economic sustainability of veterinary practice and education, building its scholarly foundations, and evolving veterinary service to meet changing societal needs. Many concerns about the profession came into focus following the outbreak of West Nile fever in 1999, and the subsequent outbreaks of SARS, monkeypox, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, highly pathogenic avian influenza, H1N1 influenza, and a variety of food safety and environmental issues heightened public concerns. They also raised further questions about the directions of veterinary medicine and the capacity of public health service the profession provides both in the United States and abroad. To address some of the problems facing the veterinary profession, greater public and private support for education and research in veterinary medicine is needed. The public, policymakers, and even medical professionals are frequently unaware of how veterinary medicine fundamentally supports both animal and human health and well-being. This report seeks to broaden the public's understanding and attempts to anticipate some of the needs and measures that are essential for the profession to fulfill given its changing roles in the 21st century.

Working equitation is a competitive equestrian sport that originated in Europe, with the first European Championship held in 1996. It quickly gained a fanbase for its beauty and its focus on classical horsemanship ideals and developing handiness under saddle. In 2004 the World Association for Working Equitation (WAWE) was established, and today, many countries have their own national organizations for governing working equitation competitions, including the United States—the USAWE was formed in 2020. The Working Equitation Training Manual provides a one-of-a-kind progressive training system to those new to the sport. Lessons focus on developing confidence with the obstacle phases of working equitation while incorporating dressage principles. The elements of each obstacle are broken down and then brought back together in step-by-step exercises that: Prepare horse and rider to perform an obstacle properly. Introduce horses and riders to competition obstacles. Help improve and polish an obstacle's execution. With clear diagrams and color photographs, a helpful glossary of terms to help those unfamiliar with working equitation terminology, and variations and benefits for every exercise, readers are provided an appealing introduction to an exciting option for adding diversity to daily training, as well as showing and competing in other sports. &“I started teaching these skills to all my students, regardless of their riding discipline,&” says Ali. &“These working equitation exercises help my riders excel at dressage, endurance, trail riding, pony clubbing, eventing, jumping, gaited horses, groundwork, Cowboy Dressage, and breed shows.&” The Working Equitation Training Manual promises to do the same for you.

World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments

by Aimee Nezhukumatathil

“A poet celebrates the wonders of nature in a collection of essays that could almost serve as a coming-of-age memoir.” —Kirkus ReviewsAs a child, Nezhukumatathil called many places home: the grounds of a Kansas mental institution, where her Filipina mother was a doctor; the open skies and tall mountains of Arizona, where she hiked with her Indian father; and the chillier climes of western New York and Ohio. But no matter where she was transplanted—no matter how awkward the fit or forbidding the landscape—she was able to turn to our world’s fierce and funny creatures for guidance.“What the peacock can do,” she tells us, “is remind you of a home you will run away from and run back to all your life.” The axolotl teaches us to smile, even in the face of unkindness; the touch-me-not plant shows us how to shake off unwanted advances; the narwhal demonstrates how to survive in hostile environments. Even in the strange and the unlovely, Nezhukumatathil finds beauty and kinship. For it is this way with wonder: it requires that we are curious enough to look past the distractions in order to fully appreciate the world’s gifts.Warm, lyrical, and gorgeously illustrated by Fumi Nakamura, World of Wonders is a book of sustenance and joy.Praise for World of WondersBarnes & Noble 2020 Book of the YearAn NPR Best Book of 2020An Esquire Best Book of 2020A Publishers Weekly “Big Indie Book of Fall 2020”A BuzzFeed Best Book of Fall 2020“Hands-down one of the most beautiful books of the year.” —NPR“A timely story about love, identity and belonging.” —New York Times Book Review“A truly wonderous essay collection.” —Roxane Gay, The Audacity
