Griffith's The Birth of a Nation. She also shows how Black filmmakers in New York and Chicago engaged with uplift through the promotion of Black modernity. Uplift cinema developed not just as a response to onscreen racism, but constituted an original engagement with the new medium that has had a deep and lasting significance for African American cinema. Although none of these films survived, Field's examination of archival film ephemera presents a method for studying lost films that opens up new frontiers for exploring early film culture.

Over the years, Upper Arlington annexed land to reach its current boundaries. Upper Arlington has had a Native American trail and a military training camp, and its historic district earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places. The community is still known for gracious living, celebrated schools, and the largest noncommercial Fourth of July parade around. Golfing legend Jack Nicklaus, Ohio State University football coaches Woody Hayes, John Cooper, and Jim Tressel,developer John Galbreath, Ohio governor James Rhodes, and United States senator John Bricker have all called Upper Arlington home.

by Walter BennickWinona, located on an island where the upper Mississippi River flows from west to east, has been linked to the river from its earliest days. Before the community's settlement, Native Americans and white explorers sailed past Wapasha's Prairie in birchbark canoes, keel boats, and small sailboats. As early as the 1820s, steamboats plied the river while carrying people and goods to and from the state's interior. Before bridges began to crisscross the river, merchants had to use boats to bring people and supplies to Winona before they could travel farther west. The first bridge to cross the river was a swing bridge that allowed steamboats to pass. Images of America: Upper Mississippi River at Winona uses images collected and archived in the Winona County Historical Society's History Center to illustrate the history of the Mississippi River near Winona. Many of the photographs exhibited in this book have rarely been seen by the general public and have never been published.
Upper Nisqually Valley

Before settlement, a system of trails through the valley gave Native Americans access to rich hunting and fishing, as well as access to a larger, cross-mountain trail system and places of spiritual significance. The first settlers entered the valley in the 1860s. Not long after, the first tourist arrived in Mount Rainier. The first recorded ascent of the mountain was in 1870. Throughout the years, as more settlers arrived and the forest industries exploded, the valley welcomed an increase in trains, roads, and visitor accommodations. With the establishment of Mount Rainier National Park in 1899, tourism began supplementing the forestry industry. In the last 100 years, forestry, farming, and sightseeing have been the story of the valley and its people.
Upper Peninsula Beer: A History of Brewing Above the Bridge (American Palate)

Upper Saucon Township and Coopersburg

Often called "the Crossroads" because of its connections to the areas around it, the tracks of the North Pennsylvania Railroad awakened the small town of Center Valley in 1856. From there, the Liberty Bell trolley line was added, making transportation of goods and people even easier within the township. Milk trolleys ran daily, and mills lined the creeks running through the predominantly agricultural township. As the connections grew, so did the needs of one of Upper Saucon Township's towns: Coopersburg. With the needs of a burgeoning town, Coopersburg petitioned to become a distinct borough in 1879. Coopersburg brought attention to the area with its industries and annual cattle sale. It was dubbed "the town of possibilities" for all it had to offer.
