CPE and SUS Environmental: You've Got to Know When to Hold 'Em (A)

by Josh Lerner Franko Jira

In July 2016, Di Yang and Grace Guo of the leading Chinese private equity group CPE faced a dilemma-a happy dilemma, but a challenge nonetheless. CPE's investment in the waste-to-energy firm SUS Environment had proved to be exceedingly successful. This success had triggered a question, which they needed to address in a recommendation to the investment committee of the private equity group. One possibility would be to view this investment as an "early win," and to begin the process of liquidating their equity stake. This would provide an inconvertible signal to the limited partners of the success of the fund. Alternatively, they could invest more in the company. If the next five years were as successful for SUS Environmental as the last two, this step could lead to a tremendous return. How should CPE resolve this question?

CRM Systems in Industrial Companies

by Andrea Perna Enrico Baraldi

CRM Systems in Industrial Companies contributes new knowledge on Customer Relationship Management (CRM) in the field of industrial marketing. Based on an in-depth case study, this book highlights the complexity and challenges in the development, implementation and use of CRM. This book proposes an alternative conceptualization of CRM: relying on the industrial marketing and purchasing (IMP) perspective, CRM becomes a socio-technical "resource" which needs to be connected to the other resources before it can create effects on customer relationships. Featuring an extensive case study of an internally developed CRM system, the book unveils the non-linear and unpredictable nature of implementing and using CRM. Having installed the CRM system is no guarantee that it will be utilized and create effects on customer relationships. As this book demonstrates, CRM can contribute value only if it becomes interfaced with individual users, and with intra- and inter- organizational context of use. More precisely, in order to produce positive effects, CRM has to match the individual user's specific information needs and attitude toward IT; it has to be supported by high internal coordination between organizational units; and it has to match the history and logic of the external relationships to which it is applied. By highlighting these demanding conditions, this book reveals how truly challenging it is to extract value from CRM systems.

CSL Capital Management: Patriot Proppants (A)

by Victoria Ivashina Yury Kapko

This two-part case series follows CSL Capital's 2009 investment in the greenfield manufacturing company, Patriot Proppants. CSL, a recently established investment firm, employs a unique investment model, funding new ("green field") energy service businesses that serve Oil & Gas customers in the growing U.S. shale industry. This (A) case offers a perspective on CSL's approach to deploying capital and the intricacies of the decision process as it relates to potential investment in Patriot. This case also offers insights into fundraising issues, asset-backed lending and co-investments. Specifically, in addition to evaluating the investment opportunity, CSL must decide which co-investment partner to take on, should it advance with the investment. Students are presented with an opportunity to closely evaluate the terms of the co-investment proposals, particularly given that they came separately from strategic and financial co-investors with divergent objectives.

CSL Capital Management: Patriot Proppants (B)

by Victoria Ivashina Yury Kapko

Case (B) is shorter and focuses on an unsolicited offer from a strategic buyer, roughly one year after the initial deal closed. This case offers an opportunity to reflect on investment value-add for CSL, exit strategies, and fundraising issues.

CSR Communication in the Media: Media Management on Sustainability at a Global Level (CSR, Sustainability, Ethics & Governance)

by Lars Rademacher René Schmidpeter Franzisca Weder

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is an established management focus of today's companies and organizations of different types, scope and size. Communication practices on CSR and sustainability in the media industry, related theoretical concepts, and empirical foundations have not yet been sufficiently explored. This book focuses on a new normative framework of sustainability, bridging the established debate on public value with the current debate on social impact and the social license to operate in the media industry. With a variety of contributions from theory and practice, the book addresses the dual nature of media and media companies, which simultaneously produce economic and cultural goods and thus bear a "double responsibility": on the one hand, for the way they present reality, monitor and criticize economic and political developments, and bring ethical concerns to the public debate. On the other hand, they bear responsibility for their own activities as companies (license to operate). The book is therefore aimed at readers interested in the journalistic perspective and at executives in the media industry.

CSR Discovery Leadership: Society, Science and Shared Value Consciousness

by Diane L. Swanson

This book argues that separation consciousness has kept a collective demand for corporate social responsibility at bay, even providing justification for business to neglect society. Yet there are signs that separation consciousness is being replaced with the expectation that businesses engage in symbiotic relationships with stakeholders that yield triple bottom line benefits. The potential for business to enact this social contract depends largely on the ability of top executives to discover how to activate the organizational values that make such benefits possible. The author argues that the required mind-set for this task bears a strong resemblance to the scientific discovery mentality, and that if executives were to embed this mentality in organizational decision making, shared consciousness between firms and stakeholders of the values that support corporate responsibility is feasible. CSR Discovery Leadership examines this prospect of shared value consciousness, a new frontier for CSR leadership.

CSR Image Discursive Construction of Banks and the Effects on Capital Markets: Comparative Study of China and US

by Muchun Wan

This book attempts to establish an inter-disciplinary discourse evaluation framework to analyze multi-dimensional discursive features along 4 dimensions in Chinese and American banks’ CSR reports: sentiment, readability, CSR keyword, and visualization. It analyzes Chinese and American banks’ different discursively constructed CSR images via the employment of various discursive features in CSR reports within their different contexts. Lastly, it examines the effects of Chinese and American banks’ discursively constructed CSR images on capital markets, with an inter-disciplinary approach of linguistics, management, and economics. Theoretically, this book contributes to the development of institutional identity’s cross-disciplinary research. Additionally, it reveals the problem-solving function of discourse. This sheds light on theoretical research into both corporate governance and business discourse. Practically, this book contributes to the improvement of Chinese banks’ awareness in CSR disclosure and the establishment of Chinese banks’ international images. Since more and more Chinese companies in different sectors are choosing overseas listings, findings in this book also have practical implications for their information disclosure, international images construction, and corporate value enhancement through corporate narratives, such as annual reports and IPO prospectuses.

CSR Reporting and the Belt and Road Initiative: Implementation by Chinese Multinational Enterprises (Routledge Advances in Management and Business Studies)

by Carlos Noronha Jieqi Guan Ruopiao Zhang

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is a major development strategy launched by the Chinese government with the goal of fostering economic cooperation among countries along the proposed routes. The BRI marks a new era in which multinational enterprises (MNEs) from developing countries are beginning to take primary responsibility for driving global flows of outward foreign direct investment (OFDI). Among hotly debated topics on how the BRI is reshaping the global competitive landscape, corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting practices of Chinese MNEs along the Belt and Road are noteworthy but relatively less discussed. This book investigates how do Chinese MNEs engage with, define, and implement CSR under such an enormous cooperative initiative through analyzing their CSR reporting practices in the BRI host countries. Besides this, opportunities and challenges of the BRI investments for sustainable development in host countries are examined. The book provides critical insights into the current institutional architecture for CSR reporting to promote sustainable development. It also highlights the importance of stakeholders’ capacities to sustain, enact, and execute strict CSR disclosure laws and regulations. The findings mark important implications, particularly in view of growing concerns about international reputational damage of unsustainable OFDI. The book is suitable for researchers, undergraduate and postgraduate students in the fields of CSR, sustainability development, accounting, and international business; as well as others who are keen on the latest development of the BRI in relation to other developing and least-developed countries.
