AMC Entertainment: Creating a Spectacular Moviegoing Experience (A)

by Aldo Sesia Henry W. McGee

The case examines an industry in decline as the emergence of new technologies is changing consumer behaviors and threatening to make the business obsolete. In 2018, the Hollywood film industry is facing tough headwinds. Fewer and fewer Americans are going to movie theaters, opting instead to watch movies on demand in the comfort of their own homes or on portable devices. Adam Aron, the head of the world's largest movie theater chain, AMC Entertainment, is employing an aggressive strategy to bolster the moviegoing experience by adding new amenities including plush reclining seats, reserved seating, and upscale food and beverage options. He is also placing a special emphasis on expansion overseas where the market is growing. Will his actions allow the company to successfully compete in a mature industry under assault by new digital competitors? With the growing popularity of entertainment subscription services like Netflix and Spotify, should AMC adopt a similar business model?

AMD Dresden: Copy Inexactly!

by Willy Shih

The establishment and growth of AMD's Dresden, Germany manufacturing site illustrates how processes develop in an organization, and how those processes get institutionalized into a unique culture. Located in the Free State of Saxony in the eastern part of Germany (the former GDR), AMD's investment in the region leverages a historic and rather unique skill base in engineering and the sciences, and catalyzes the rebirth and growth of one of the largest semiconductor clusters in Europe. Contrary to conventional wisdom in the semiconductor industry, the Dresden team only copied from its home corporate locations in the United States those processes and practices that it felt would work in Germany rather than follow a copy exactly strategy. Dresden becomes AMD's sole worldwide manufacturing location for microprocessors, but now the company is faced with the question of whether it can successfully transplant the highly successful culture to other global locations because of favorable investment incentives.

AMD: A Customer-Centric Approach to Innovation

by Elie Ofek Lauren Barley

AMD's launch of the Opteron microprocessor in 2003 has allowed the company to make inroads into the lucrative server segment. A long-time follower to Intel, AMD management felt it was in a position to lead the microprocessor industry in new directions. However, in 2006 it was not clear whether Opteron's success in the server segment would translate into success in other microprocessor segments, notably corporate desktop and laptop, and whether the initial success in servers could be sustained in the future. Intel's imminent new product and pricing plans, as well as its existing brand power, could greatly hamper AMD's growth and thwart its new initiatives--which included opening up its architecture for end users to customize and recast its brand identity. Also examines how a company tries to gain competitive advantage through an approach to innovation that emphasizes customer centricity.

ANALYSIS: The Key to Improving Organization and Individual Performance

by Richard A. Swanson Thomas J. Chermack

With the volatile nature of today’s workplaces, analysis tools are more valuable than ever: this book provides those tools to capture human expertise before it leaves the organization. The concepts of analysis may be timeless, but recent years have seen massive changes in terms of organizational structures, work systems, and worker requirements, such as remote working and increased employee turnover. This book covers the theory and concepts behind performance improvement, and then turns to the real-world work of performance diagnosis, process improvement, and task documentation, introducing cross-functional task analysis, which recognizes the changing nature of work as more of today’s tasks are extensive and require collaboration across jobs. Each chapter can stand alone if organizations need to focus on a particular area, and includes examples that reflect contemporary work, from job descriptions to task inventories and specific task analyses. One of the only texts providing the tools and processes necessary to analyze workplace performance, document human expertise, and develop training materials, this book is intended for managers, executives, students, and any workplace or organization development professional interested in human expertise and how to manage it.

ANGEL ROTO, EL (EBOOK)

by Gloria V. Casañas

AOL Time Warner, Inc.

by Stephen P. Bradley Erin E. Sullivan

AOL Time Warner, which has been billed as the "first fully integrated media and communications company of the Internet Century," raises the fundamental question of how value will be created and captured by the merger of AOL and Time Warner. This case describes just how different AOL was from Time Warner in strategy, culture, and execution, and permits a thorough analysis of how value is proposed to be created through capturing synergies within the new company. The discussion of synergies is divided into three levels: tactical, strategic, and transformational. The key question to address is whether a merger of this sort is the most effective way to create value or whether contracting and other mechanisms is equally good or perhaps superior. A rewritten version of an earlier case.

APM Salary and Market Trends Survey 2021

by Association for Project Management

Our Salary and Market Trends Survey took place in November 2020 against a backdrop that few could have predicted 12 months before. Working with YouGov, the survey captured not only the facts and figures shaping the project profession, but also created a snapshot of a profession dealing with the impact of a global pandemic. We are able to better understand how the longer-term trends of a younger, more diverse profession were combining with the short-term shock brought about by coronavirus. The result is a useful picture of a profession holding steady in the face of some serious adversity. For most the impact has not been as bad as some may have feared and that the profession as a whole remains optimistic about its ability to navigate a difficult time. While expectations for growth may have been tempered, a strong sense of resilience and steadfastness shines through the 2,626 responses. Please note, whole numbers are used for the report, so some figures may not add up to 100 per cent due to rounding. The median has been used as the average for salaries, unless stated.
