Angel Customers & Demon Customers
by Geoffrey Colvin Larry SeldenHow businesses can thrive by learning which customers are creating the most profit-and which are losing them money. One of the oldest myths in business is that every customer is a valuable customer. Even in the age of high-tech data collection, many businesses don't realize that some of their customers are deeply unprofitable, and that simply doing business with them is costing them money. In many places, it's typical that the top 20 percent of customers are generating almost all the profit while the bottom 20 percent are actually destroying value. Managers are missing tremendous opportunities if they are not aware which of their customers are truly profitable and which are not. According to Larry Selden and Geoff Colvin, there is a way to fix this problem: manage your business not as a collection of products and services but as a customer portfolio. Selden and Colvin show readers how to analyze customer data to understand how you can get the most out of your most critical customer segments. The authors reveal how some companies (such as Best Buy and Fidelity Investments) have already moved in this direction, and what customer-centric strategies are likely to become widespread in the coming years. For corporate leaders, middle managers, or small business owners, this book offers a breakthrough plan to delight their best customers and drive shareowner value.

AngelList
by Liz Kind Ramana NandaIn early 2010, Naval Ravikant and Babak Nivi posted a list of angel investors on the Venture Hacks blog as a resource for founders looking for funding prior to seeking venture capital. The list quickly evolved into AngelList, a separate matchmaking platform for founders and investors to make early stage fundraising more efficient. By June 2013, AngelList had garnered substantial media attention, and was used by many high profile angel investors and venture capitalists. It had approximately 100,000 startups and 18,000 accredited investors. Since the site was launched, almost 40 startups on AngelList had been acquired, and over 2,000 startups had been funded. For most entrepreneurs, posting a profile on AngelList had become as commonplace as setting up a personal profile on Facebook or LinkedIn. Most recently, the site added Invest Online, a new product that in partnership with SecondMarket, allowed accredited investors to make small investments-as low as $1,000-in startups at the same terms as larger investors. While the co-founders were proud of AngelList's growth, as of June 2013, they were not charging for its use and had not yet determined its business model. Ravikant and Nivi wondered if they should reconsider and have AngelList apply for broker dealer status so it could charge transaction fees, but they were reluctant to enter what they considered a regulatory minefield. The recently passed JOBS Act was expected to relax constraints around crowdfunding, and Nivi and Ravikant knew that would be a logical extension for AngelList as well. Finally, they wondered if they should avoid any potential regulatory issues altogether and instead focus on generating revenue primarily from recruiting and other ancillary services.

Angela Merkel
by Tony Czuczka Alan CrawfordShortlisted for International Affairs Book of the Year in the Paddy Power Political Book Awards 2014Angela Merkel was already unique when she became German chancellor: the first female leader of Europe's biggest economy, the first from former communist East Germany and the first born after World War II. Since 2010, the debt crisis that spread from Greece to the euro region and the world economy has propelled her to center-stage, making Merkel the dominant politician in the struggle to preserve Europe's economic model and its single currency. Yet the Protestant pastor's daughter is often viewed as enigmatic and hard-to-predict, a misreading that took hold as she resisted global pressure for grand gestures to counter the crisis. Having turned the fall of the Berlin Wall to her advantage, Merkel is trying to get history on her side again after reaching the fundamental decision to save the euro, the crowning achievement of post-war European unity. Merkel has brought Europe to a crossroads. Germany's economic might gives her unprecedented power to set the direction for the European Union's 500 million people. What's at stake is whether she will persuade them to follow the German lead.Angela Merkel: A Chancellorship Forged in Crisis is the definitive new biography of the world's most powerful woman. Delving into Merkel's past, the authors explain the motives behind her drive to remake Europe for the age of globalization, her economic role models and the experiences under communism that color her decisions. For the first time in English, Merkel is fully placed in her European context. Through exclusive interviews with leading policy makers and Merkel confidants, the book reveals the behind-the-scenes drama of the crisis that came to dominate her chancellorship, her prickly relationship with the U.S. and admiration for Eastern Europe. Written by two long-standing Merkel watchers, the book documents how her decisions and vision - both works in progress - are shaping a pivotal moment in European history.
Angell at 100: A Century of Compassionate Care for Animals and Their Families at Angell Animal Medical Center
by Karen CampbellAngell at 100: A Century of Compassionate Care for Animals and Their Families at Angell Animal Medical Center chronicles the achievements of one of the foremost clinical veterinary institutions in the world. Angell Animal Medical Center is the first and largest animal hospital in New England. This book is a celebration of one hundred years of groundbreaking innovation and heartfelt compassion. Founded in 1868 by George Angell, the MSPCA is the second oldest humane organization in America. Its flagship hospital, Angell Animal Medical Center, was founded in 1915, and was the first animal hospital in New England. The MSPCA Angell has expanded from advocacy and protection to healing and advancing the practice of veterinary medicine. Over the past century the organization has seen vast changes in society, the environment, and the attitude to the animals in our lives. It has helped make laws and set standards that have fundamentally shaped our sense of kindness and care for animals and for one another. In the 21st century, MSPCAAngell continues to rescue, shelter, protect, heal, and advocate for animals, giving special care to tens of thousands of animals each year. It also provides emergency assistance and strategic planning help for animal protection groups across the United States and around the globe. This book is a portrait of Angell Animal Medical Center from its founding in 1915 to the present day, and tells the stories of the dedicated doctors, the creative medical innovations, and of course the tales of the diverse patients and their families. Today the hospital has specialties ranging from acupuncture to ophthalmology, from behavioral services to nutrition, from dentistry to neurology and neurosurgery, as well as general medicine. Although the majority of the patients are dogs and cats, birds and rabbits are not uncommon, and there is sometimes even the occasional tortoise.
Angels and Devils: Best Buy's New Customer Approach (A)
by Anita Elberse Das Narayandas John T. GourvilleIn November 2004, The Wall Street Journal reported that consumer electronics retailer Best Buy's new customer approach was to shun the "devils" among its customers. The "customer centricity" initiative, which was led by Best Buy's CEO Brad Anderson, was based on an analysis of the purchase histories of several customer groups. The central idea was to revamp stores according to the most lucrative types of customers they served--the "angels" among the company's customers. Encourages an assessment of Best Buy's strategy and, more generally, of the challenges and opportunities in managing customers for profits.
