Moments of Truth: The Politics of Financial Crises in Comparative Perspective (Conceptualising Comparative Politics)
by George Philip Francisco PanizzaThe current financial and sovereign debt crisis of the European Union and the United States can be regarded as the most recent of a wave of financial and sovereign debt crises that have affected different regions of the world over the past quarter century. While there is a large and growing body of literature on the economic aspects of financial crises, its political elements remain surprisingly under-studied. Moments of Truth: The Politics of Financial Crises in Comparative Perspective fills this gap in the literature by looking at the political repercussions and policy implications of financial crises in comparative perspective, using case studies in Latin America, Korea, and Russia, as well as the contemporary crises in the US and in key European countries. Contributors to this volume look at the crises as critical junctures that generate high levels of uncertainty while calling for decisive action. The chapters emphasize structural or agency based explanations and give relevance to the role of ideas, interests, and institutions in explaining different outcomes. The questions addressed by the case studies include: how the crises were defined by key actors, the range of political and policy options available to deal with their impact, the role of ideas in policy shifts, how political and economic actors redefine their interests in contexts of uncertainty, how political institutions mediate reactions to the crises, what explains the choice of a certain option over other alternatives, and whether the crisis has (so far) resulted in significant political and policy changes or in incremental adjustments to the status quo. The first book to comparatively analyze the political dimensions of financial crises across different global regions, Moments of Truth will be highly significant for any scholars interested in the contemporary debate on financial crises.
Momentum Trading on the Indian Stock Market
by Chitrakalpa Sen Gagari ChakrabartiThis study is an exploration of the Indian stock market, focusing on the possible presence of momentum trading. One thing, however, should be noted. While it is true that momentum trading, which tends to generate speculative bubbles, may result in a financial market crash, its nature in contrast might depend on the nature of the economy itself. The study, while exploring the presence and nature of momentum trading on the Indian stock market in recent years, seeks to relate it to significant structural breaks in the Indian or global economy. To be precise, it outlines a potential correlation between the instability in the stock market and the speculative trading on the market, exploring the question of whether it is human psychology that drives financial markets. In the process, the choice of a significant structural break has been obvious: the global financial meltdown of 2007-2008 - a crisis that has often been referred to as the worst ever since the crash of 1929. While analyzing the nature of momentum trading on the Indian stock market with regard to the financial crisis of 2007-08, the study takes into account two major representatives of the market, the BSE (Bombay Stock Index) and NSE (National Stock Index), for the period 2005 to 2012. This study seeks to answer a few important questions. First of all, it tries to unveil the underlying structure of the market. In doing so, it examines the following issues: (i) What was the latent structure of the Indian stock market leading up to the crisis of 2007-08? Does the structure offer insights into designing profitable trading strategies? (ii) Is it possible to construct a profitable portfolio on the Indian stock market? (iii) Is there any profitable trading strategy on the Indian stock market? While exploring these issues, the study delves deeper, breaking the whole period down into two sub-periods, before the crisis of 2008 and after the crisis. The purpose of this division is to determine whether there has been any discernible change in the market structure since the shock.

Monarch: A Book on Strategy Across the Industry Life Cycle
by Hanan AlhaddiMonarch: Resilience through Evolution is a comprehensive guide on strategy across the industry life cycle, taking readers on an insightful journey through the dynamic world of business. Drawing inspiration from the resilient and adaptive nature of the monarch butterfly, this book offers a fresh perspective on strategic decision-making in today’s ever-changing business environment. Central to the narrative is the concept of the industry life cycle, which serves as the foundational context for strategy development and deployment in organizations. It considers the complexities of organizations as adaptive systems and industries as aggregates of organizations, emphasizing the importance of adaptability, persistence, and strategic agility. Monarch advocates for approaching strategy as a living process aligned with this perspective. Through insightful analyses and real-world examples, the book illustrates how organizations can navigate uncertainty and thrive in the face of adversity. At each phase of the life cycle, guidance on organizational self-assessment, strategy development, strategy deployment, and common pitfalls to avoid is provided. An innovative approach to the strategy cascade is introduced, using the notion of "magnifying lenses" to ensure strategic alignment across corporate, business, and functional-levels. The book then transitions into pursuing strategy as a negotiation and concludes with a special note on the strategic imperative and considerations for leadership.

Monday Morning Mentoring
by David CottrellEveryone who wants a fulfilling career needs a mentor -- someone who has seen it all before, someone who can share hard-won experiences and teach valuable lessons. In this expanded and enhanced version of his best-selling book, Monday Morning Leadership, David Cottrell packs all of the wisdom of his wide-ranging business experience into this inspirational story. Cottrell introduces us to Jeff, a successful corporate manager who has hit a major wall. Jeff has been leading his team, quarter after quarter, to great sales and better profits for several years -- until now. The tricks that used to work wonders have lost their magic; Jeff is in a slump and is at a loss to find his way out of it. Overworked, stressed, and feeling that his personal and professional lives are at risk, Jeff reaches out to the father of a college buddy, a retired and tremendously accomplished former executive named Tony. Tony and Jeff agree to meet every Monday for ten weeks to work through Jeff's problems and get his career back on track. In the course of these intimate sessions, Jeff discovers the secrets of real leadership: "Until I accept total responsibility -- no matter what -- I will not be able to put plans in place to accomplish my goals." And, "My success is the result of making better choices and recovering quickly from poor choices." Tony leads Jeff through tough lessons in how to manage his people, how to manage his own time, how to manage his superiors, and how to escape from "management land." Most of all, Jeff learns that his success is intimately bound with the success of his people and that tolerating lackluster performance in himself and others on the team only leads to discontent from his most prized and productive employees. Through Jeff's mentoring sessions, the reader meets a character of integrity who dispenses homespun but effective wisdom. Spend time with Tony and Jeff at their Monday morning meetings, and you will find yourself on the road to becoming a better leader and being more successful at work.
Monday Morning Motivation
by David CottrellHow to generate the positive energy found in successful organizations What is organizational energy? According to internationally recognized leadership coach David Cottrell, it is not short-term enthusiasm for the latest corporate program-of-the-week. Instead, it is grounded in something much deeper--a solid commitment to an organization, its mission, and its values. When used positively, organizational energy strengthens and solidifies personal motivation, producing an unshakable desire to achieve bigger and better results. It is a precious resource your organization cannot afford to be without. In Monday Morning Motivation, Cottrell takes inspiration from Einstein's famous equation E=mc2 to provide a step-by-step strategy you can use to access your organization's energy reservoir (E) and accelerate your people (m) to the next level of performance. Specifically, he reveals the vital conductors of energy (c) that you need to motivate your team and customers--synchronization, speed, communication, customer passion, and integrity--and expertly demonstrates the effect that your leadership style (2) has on the effectiveness of these conductors. Fortunately you don't need to be Einstein to learn and apply these principles to your organization. You just need one hour each week for ten weeks to consider Cottrell's helpful discussion questions and determine what you can do right now to become a better leader and motivator. If you do, you will launch your organization to greater results and a whole new stratosphere of job satisfaction.

Mondo Agnelli
by Jennifer ClarkThe fascinating story of a century-old automobile dynastyFiat is one of the world's largest automakers, but when it made headlines by grabbing control of a bankrupt Chrysler in 2009 it was unknown in the U.S. Fiat's against-all-odds swoop on Chrysler---masterminded by Sergio Marchionne, the Houdini-like manager who saved Fiat from its own near-collapse in 2005 - has made the automaker one of the most unlikely winners of the financial crisis. Mondo Agnelli is a new book that looks at the chain of unpredictable events triggered by the death of Gianni Agnelli in 2003. Gianni, the charismatic, silver-haired power broker and style icon, was the patriarch who had lead the company founded by his grandfather in 1899. But Gianni's own son had committed suicide. Without a mature heir, the dynasty and Fiat were rudderless. Backed by Gianni's closest advisors, his serious, shy, and determined grandson John plucked Marchionne from obscurity. Together, they saved the family company and, inadvertently, positioned Fiat as a global trailblazer when the global storm hit.A classic story of ingenuity and hard work, the book portrays a business dynasty that triumphed over adversity and family tragedy because of its own smarts, sweat, and ability to bend the rulesA an engaging tale for those interested in the stories behind the economic crash, the book contains never-before reported material about how Fiat succeeded in making Chrysler profitable where both Daimler AG and Cerberus, its previous owners, had failed.A story for a wide audience, from car buffs, business readers, lovers of Italy, and anyone fascinated by the lifestyle of Europe's most glamorous industrial dynasty, this book tells the tale of how Fiat achieved the seemingly impossible -- turning around an American automotive icon everyone else had given up for dead.

Monetary Analysis at Central Banks
by David CobhamWhatever happened to the money supply? This book explains how the analysis of monetary and credit aggregates is undertaken at the Bank of England, the European Central Bank and (as an example of a developing country) the Bank of Tanzania. The book also explores how this analysis relates to these central banks' monetary policy strategies and how it feeds into policymaking. An editorial introduction provides the intellectual and historical background - from the contributions of key economists such as Milton Friedman and Jacques Polak, to monetary targeting and inflation targeting - and argues that central banks and policy analysts would be foolish to neglect the insights monetary analysis can offer. The papers compiled in Monetary Analysis at Central Banks demonstrate just how useful and varied those insights are.
