Multidimensional Poverty Measurement: Theory and Methodology (International Research on Poverty Reduction)

by Xiaolin Wang

This book addresses and compensates for the lack of poverty measurement research in China. With regard to the multi-dimensional measurement of poverty, it is clear that the situation of Chinese farmers is problematic in terms of five major aspects: sanitation facilities, health insurance, durable consumer goods, productive assets and modern fuels. Based on these criteria, the book provides a clear direction for policy intervention to comprehensively improve farmers’ standard of living and tackle the key problems of poverty alleviation and development in the region. In addition, its analysis of poverty among ethnic minorities, the elderly and children offers valuable reference material for poverty alleviation and the development of special groups.

Multidimensional Poverty in America: The Incidence and Intensity of Deprivation, 2008-2018

by Roger White

This book investigates and documents multidimensional poverty in the United States and identifies patterns and relationships that contribute to the development of a more complete understanding of the incidence and intensity of deprivation. The first part introduces multidimensional poverty and provides a rationale for viewing poverty through a lens of multiple deprivations. It discusses how the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) compares to more narrowly-focused, income-based poverty measures and emphasizes its usefulness and applicability for the formulation of related, welfare-enhancing public policies. The second part documents multidimensional poverty incidence, intensity, and corresponding MPI values at the aggregate level of detail, for various demographic cohorts, and across geographic locales. The book then presents results from an empirical analysis that identifies the determinants of multidimensional poverty incidence and of individual deprivation scores. The third part consists of three studies of multidimensional poverty, examining the effect of the Affordable Care Act on multidimensional poverty incidence and intensity, variation in multidimensional poverty across native- and foreign-born residents (and across immigrants’ home countries) of the US, and variation in the respective indicators that contribute to multidimensional poverty across the life cycle. The book closes with two chapters. The first relays the findings of counterfactual exercises where certain deprivations are assumed to have been eliminated. The final chapter summarizes the work, draws inferences and arrives at conclusions, and discusses the corresponding public policy implications.

Multidimensional Practice of Social Work for Poverty Alleviation in China (Poverty-Alleviation and Social Work in China)

by Min Tong

This book is based on China's poverty alleviation work and combines social work expertise with anti-poverty research to provide a blueprint as a reference for preventing poverty return in the post-2020 era, promoting rural governance, and effectively linking poverty eradication and rural revitalization. Through a two-year participatory cooperation, the book, taking the targeted poverty alleviation pilot project named “Warmhearted Home Delivery” in T District(Xiamen City, Fujian Province) as a case study, finds that social work against poverty among the deeply impoverished needs to base on a "fact-ethic" two-dimensional perspective integrating risk with ability to achieve the trinary combination of the population classification to prevent the risk of returning to poverty, the exploiting the potential of families to solve the living difficulties, and the environmental-supported community multi-participation assets. This book is the first professional book in China that systematically describes how to do a good job in poverty eradication and poverty return prevention for people with deep poverty. This book records the time, demonstrates the academic achievements, and focuses on people's livelihood.

Multidimensional Well-Being, Deprivation and Inequality: Conceptual Issues and Measurement (Economic Studies in Inequality, Social Exclusion and Well-Being)

by Yongsheng Xu P. K. Pattanaik

This volume explores several aspects of Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum’s framework for thinking about individual well-being. Called the functioning and capability approach (FCA), this framework radically departs from the conventional approach to the concept of individual well-being in welfare economics insofar as it identifies an individual’s well-being as the value attached to the individual’s achievements along certain dimensions of life and her freedom to choose a vector of such achievements rather than as the individual’s happiness or desire fulfillment. The volume consists of two main parts. Part I outlines and studies the basic conceptual and analytical framework and its major features in detail. Part II of the book is devoted to application of the analytical structure of the FCA to practical problems of measuring well-being, deprivation, and inequality in a society. The book concludes with a discussion of the main conclusions of earlier chapters and the role of social scientists and philosophers in the FCA. This volume will be of interest to students, researchers, and practitioners studying multidimensional well-being, deprivation and inequality.

Multidimensionales Controlling und Kostenmanagement: Theorie und Anwendung am Beispiel von Versicherern

by Rainer Pelizäus

by Christian Van Husen Jivka Ovtcharova

Multidisciplinarity: Projects for Social Change in Art and Culture (Complexity and Interdisciplinarity in Project Management)

by Luisa Santos

In Manifesto for an Independent Revolutionary Art André Breton and Diego Rivera, under the effects of German fascism and Russian Stalinism in society, argued that art can only impact society and be revolutionary if it becomes independent of any social constructs. Almost six decades later, in the rise of what became known as "relational aesthetics", the field of multidisciplinarity is expanding and many artistic projects for social change claim to be multidisciplinarity. However, such projects show that we are still far from a broad discourse of multidisciplinarity. Multidisciplinarity takes a step towards a down-to-earth discussion of the relation between disciplinary discourses and grand narratives in three different projects, focusing mainly on its artistic, cultural and management aspects. Indeed, drawing from the eclectic construction of these three multidisciplinary projects, this volume serves to bridge the gap between the theoretical debates of disciplinary discourses and the harshness of everyday life in communities where projects for social change are being implemented. Presenting a panoptical view that places academic research side by side with daily life, Multidisciplinarity unveils the bigger picture of both projects and interdisciplinary discourses. This insightful volume will appeal to students and researchers interested in fields such as Project Management, Multidisciplinarity, Culture Studies and Organisational Studies.

Multidisciplinary Aspects of Design: Objects, Processes, Experiences and Narratives (Springer Series in Design and Innovation #37)

by Giovanni Matteucci Giampiero Bosoni Elisabetta Di Stefano Francesca Zanella Gioia Laura Iannilli Rita Messori Raffaella Trocchianesi

This open access book gathers the contributions from the Design! OPEN International Conference, held in Parma, Italy in May 2022. The conference explored the multidisciplinary aspects of design starting from its dimensions: objects (design as focused on the object, on its functional and symbolic dimension, and at the same time on the object as a tool for representing cultures), processes (the designer’s self-reflective moment which is focused on the analysis and on the definition of processes in various contexts, spanning innovation, social engagement, reflection on emergencies or forecasting), experiences (design as a theoretical and practical strategy aimed at facilitating experiential interactions among people, people and objects or environments), and narratives (making history, representing through different media, archiving, narrating, and exhibiting design). The contributions, which were selected by means of a rigorous international peer-review process, highlight numerous exciting ideas that will spur novel research directions and foster multidisciplinary collaboration among different specialists.

Multidisciplinary Design of Sharing Services (Research For Development Ser.)

by Maurizio Bruglieri

This book explores all aspects of the sharing economy, pursuing a multidisciplinary approach encompassing Service Design, Spatial Design, Sociology, Economics, Law, and Transport and Operations Research. The book develops a unified vision of sharing services, and pinpoints the most important new challenges. The first, more theoretical part covers general topics from the perspectives of experts in the respective disciplines. Among the subjects addressed are the role of the user in co-design and co-production; impacts of sharing services on cities, communities, and private spaces; individual rewarding and social outcomes; regulatory issues; and the scope for improving the efficiency of design, management, and analysis of sharing services. In turn, the second part of the book presents a selection of case studies of specific sharing services, in which many of the concepts described in the first part are put into practice. Readers will gain a deeper understanding of the dynamics of sharing services and of the hidden problems that may arise. Key factors responsible for the success (or failure) of sharing services are identified by analyzing some of the best (and worst) practices. Given its breadth of coverage, the book offers a valuable guide for researchers and for all stakeholders in the sharing economy, including startup founders and local administrators.

Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Grit: Contemporary Theories, Assessments, Applications and Critiques

by Chantal Olckers Leoni van der Vaart Llewellyn Ellardus van Zyl

This volume provides a multi-disciplinary perspective on grit, its measurement, manifestation and development. Specifically, it provides a comprehensive and balanced response to critiques associated with the construct within the contemporary positive psychological literature. These critiques revolve around the lack of consensus in the conceptualisation, measurement, and management of grit, as well as consensus on its difference from other psychological constructs such as conscientiousness, diligence or determination. Therefore, this volume thoroughly reappraises and consolidates the nature, function, measurement and implications of grit in order to effectively advance the science of achievement. It looks at grit scales developed in various countries and evaluates the concept in various aspects of life, from work performance to sports. Written by a team of multi-disciplinary experts in fields ranging from neuroscience, sociology, and education to human resource management and psychology, this volume firmly positions grit within the discipline of positive psychology’s nomological lexicon.

Multifunctional Agriculture: A Transition Theory Perspective

by Geoff A. Wilson

As the world grows hungrier we need more food from less land, and we need it now. However, one of the options that shows the most promise, multifunctional agriculture, has received less attention than it should. Wilson (geography, U. of Plymouth) takes the novel approach of applying transition theory to the issue and establishes a link between multifunctional agriculture and post-productivism. He begins by conceptualizing transition at the theoretical level and examining its place in social and natural science debates. He then reshapes the notion of transition by exposing the complexity of transitory systems and moves from productivist to post-productivist agriculture (and back) to reconceptualize multifunctional agriculture transitions into a workable concept. This unique approach is sure to raise awareness of the concepts behind multifunctional agriculture and increase research at practical and theoretical levels.

Multifunctional Rural Land Management: Economics and Policies

by C. Martijn van der Heide Brouwer Floor

The increasing demand for rural land and its natural resources is creating competition and conflicts. Many interested parties, including farmers, nature conservationists, rural residents and tourists, compete for the same space. Especially in densely populated areas, agriculture, recreation, urban and suburban growth and infrastructure development exert a constant pressure on rural areas. Because land is a finite resource, spatial policies which are formulated and implemented to increase the area allocated to one use imply a decrease in land available for other uses. As a result, at many locations, multi-purpose land use is becoming increasingly important. This notion of multi-purpose land use is reflected in the term 'multifunctionality'. This volume provides insights into viable strategies of sustainable management practices allowing multiple functions sustained by agriculture and natural resources in rural areas. It shows how the rural economy and policies can balance and cope with these competing demands and includes numerous case studies from Europe, North America and developing countries.

Multigenerational Communication in Organizations: Insights from the Workplace (Routledge Focus on Communication Studies)

Multilateral Banks and the Development Process: Vital Links in the Results Chain

by Vinod Thomas

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. When the links in the chain represent development projects, if individual projects fail to achieve their purpose, the development program's effectiveness is compromised. When the chain's links are strong and well-connected, the results are improved for the sector, country, and region. The role of multilateral banks is crucial; they inform the impact of development operations and support policymakers in decision making. This volume emphasizes that some crucial links in development tend to be systematically overlooked. In these matters, preoccupation with the immediate exigencies seems to come at the expense of attention to enduring problems-at a great cost to society. Development practitioners should apply policies that have produced results over time, ensuring that the links in the chain are strong, but too often they overlook those links-because of myopia, complexity, tradition, or special interests. This book will help policy makers and practitioners focus on the links that measure progress, apply lessons, and matter for lasting results.

Multilateral Development Banks: Governance and Finance

by Ihsan Ugur Delikanli Todor Dimitrov Roena Agolli

This book provides a comprehensive overview and insight of virtually all multilateral institutions involved in lending for international socio-economic development. The analysis covers twenty-five MDBs globally by classifying them in three groups based on geographical lending outreach. Unlike similar books and articles, which treat MDBs as banks, this book offers a novel perspective by addressing the specifics of multilateral lending institutions, revealing multiple aspects of their operations, going beyond the “bank” concept towards “knowledge bank,” “change agent,” and even “benchmark setter.” The book reflects on the key role of most MDBs in inspiring and advancing sustainable economic development through transfer of knowledge and funding towards addressing multiple global challenges for the benefit of practitioners, consultants, government officials, borrowers, and researchers interested in MDBs.

Multilateral Development Cooperation in a Changing Global Order

by Hany Besada Shannon Kindornay

Given the current environment, there is a compelling need to undergo a broad-ranging analysis on the future of multilateral development cooperation. The time has come to critically examine the effectiveness of international development assistance channelled through multilateral organizations, emphasizing what works and what needs to change in the context of an evolving global order. This volume addresses the changing nature of the international aid system and the challenges it poses for the multilateral system, donors and aid recipients, centring on new regional and national relationships developing in the multilateral system, economic and social forces, and national and global policy making. It looks at the increasing complexity and incoherence of the aid architecture that is arising from these trends and examines persistent longstanding challenges at country level, including the need for more capacity development, country ownership, and better quality aid.

Multilateral Environmental Agreements

by Bharat H. Desai

The present study seeks to examine the genesis, development, and proliferation of multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) - in-built law-making mechanisms and processes of institutionalization - and their ad hoc treaty-based status and the issue of the legal personality of their secretariats. It provides legal understanding of the location of MEA secretariats within an existing international host institution, as well as discussion of the issue of relationship agreements and interpretation of the commonly used language that triggers such relationships. It places under scrutiny the standard MEA phrase "providing a secretariat," delegation of authority by the host institution to the head of the convention secretariat, possible conflict areas, host country agreement, and the workings of the relationship agreements. The book offers an authoritative account of the growing phenomenon in which an existing international institution provides a servicing base for MEA that, in turn, triggers a chain of legal implications involving the secretariat, the host institution, and the host country.

Multilateral Investment Insurance and Private Investment in the Third World

by Manfred Holthus Dietrich Kebschull Karl Wolfgang Menck

The flow of capital to Third World countries in recent years has been less than expected for realizing their growth objectives. As a consequence, efforts have been redoubled to attract capital in the form of direct investment. The World Bank has proposed the establishment of a multilateral guarantee scheme, encompassing as many investing and host countries as possible, to reduce the risks associated with overseas investment. The authors analyze and comment on the necessity and suitability of the World Bank proposal. They examine earlier proposals for setting up multi lateral guarantee schemes and the reasons for their failure, develop an eco nomic frame of reference for analyzing the new proposal, describe and examine the World Bank plan, and present alternatives to it. They pay particular attention to two major assumptions of the plan: that additional foreign investment capital for developing countries could be mobilized on a large scale if the investment risks were reduced, and that existing national insurance schemes display shortcomings that could be avoided in a multilateral system.

Multilateral Official Debt Rescheduling

Multilateral Sanctions Revisited: Lessons Learned from Margaret Doxey (McGill-Queen's/Brian Mulroney Institute of Government Studies in Leadership, Public Policy, and Governance)

by Andrea Charron and Clara Portela

Sanctions are back with a vengeance with new objectives, measures, challenges, and opportunities. Shaping the thinking of generations of scholars, Canadian visionary Margaret Doxey anticipated and analyzed these issues, making now the time to rediscover her seminal lessons and apply them to emerging sanctions practices that are taking shape in an increasingly geopolitically contested environment.Written by an international team of women, Multilateral Sanctions Revisited explores UN measures, regional sanctions, autonomous measures, and their interrelations. Informed by Doxey’s insights, the authors trace the evolution of scholarship surrounding multilateral sanctions. The first section analyzes how different actors, such as great powers and regional organizations, employ multilateral sanctions. Turning to contemporary issues, the book’s second section addresses the application and consequences of multilateral sanctions including the norms they enforce, the pernicious problem of evasion, and future challenges, such as sanctioning cryptocurrencies.Multilateral Sanctions Revisited is both a source for academics and a guidebook for practitioners written by leading and emerging sanctions scholars from three continents.
