(180) Days of Quibi

by David J. Collis Terrence Shu

Mobile streaming app Quibi was ready to take the entertainment world by storm at its April 2020 launch. Backed by $1.75 billion, influential investors from Hollywood to Wall Street eagerly anticipated early success for this brainchild of Meg Whitman, former CEO of Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and Jeffrey Katzenberg, former chairperson of Walt Disney Studios and co-founder of DreamWorks Pictures. Quibi's value proposition was to fill a 'white space' through seven to ten minute dramas, on a platform that was technologically sophisticated for users and extremely copyright friendly for content creators. Six months later, a disappointing lack of demand cornered Quibi into closing shop. Was it poor timing, or inherent business model viability? This case prompts discussion on the complete strategy landscape, from defining the opportunity set and value potential to understanding the ultimate outcome.

(No More) Mediocre Me: How Saying No to the Status Quo Will Propel You From Ordinary to Extraordinary

by John E. Michel

If you were to account for your life at this moment—are you living up to your own potential? Does your present state of affairs give you reason to be disappointed or discouraged? Is your job unsatisfying…your relationships far from what they could be…your spiritual life a mere shadow of what it once was? If you answered “yes” to one or more of these questions, then there is a very good chance you--like scores of other Americans--have been lulled into accepting a life that is simply "good enough." This is what I term a Mediocre Me Mindset--a confining way of thinking about your role in the world that convinces you to settle for the perceived safety of the status quo rather than push outside your comfort zone to try and make tomorrow a little better than you found it today. In Mediocre Me, you will find a simple, yet profoundly powerful approach to rethinking the way you view your role in the world. It’s a proven means of breaking free from the grasp of mediocrity so you can lead a life of true purpose, meaning, and significance. And perhaps the best part of all…it’s not a new idea! The concepts in Mediocre Me are actually anchored in an over two thousand year old legend. One that reminds us we are at our individual and collective best not when we are standing still, unwitting prisoners of the status quo, but rather, when we are unafraid to reject apathy and embrace action by leading the positive change we want to see occur in our surroundings. Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote, “America is another name for opportunity.” At a time in our nation’s history when we seem more divided than united, more fearful than hopeful, there can be no more fence-sitting. It’s time to begin writing a different, more empowering personal leadership story of your own. One that will energize you to do what you can, when you can, where you can, to be a force for good in your part of the world when doing so is needed now more than ever.

**Missing**: Generating New Urbanity—An Action Research for Milan (SpringerBriefs in Applied Sciences and Technology)

by Gabriele Pasqui Marika Fior Paolo Galuzzi Piergiorgio Vitillo

This book explores the topic of proximity and its relations in the design of contemporary urban fabrics and public spaces. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and reflections on the future of cities have lately shed light on the concept of proximity, which is intended as the relationship between communities and urban functions and as relations among people, built spaces, and open spaces. The proximity is a historic and fertile field of interest for American and Northern European urban studies; it is a spatial and social program seemingly surpassed by the styles and rhythms of contemporary city life, but today it is back in vogue with different purposes. Meanwhile, the action research developed by the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies at the Politecnico di Milano for the Municipality of Milan reached its conclusion (2018–2020). The research work focused on contextualizing the new M4 Metro line stations under construction, and jointed mobility flows and places, long-range networks and local ones, boosting the idea of metro stations as regenerative urban thresholds and urban platforms for enabling environmental, sustainable settlement, and active mobility systems. In other words, the action research for Milan shows how to achieve the concept of proximity in the urban design practice in a dense, stratified, and complex urban context.

**Missing**: Insights for Other Professions from Reflective Practice in Teacher Education (SpringerBriefs in Education)

by Linley Cornish

This book examines significant developments in reflective practice, delving into research conducted with novice teachers. It fills a gap in existing literature by examining the 'how' of reflective practice. How do professionals learn reflective practice, fostering relearning? How do they guide students, mentees, and novices in adopting reflective practices? Stemming from teacher education, the focus is extended beyond this field, emphasizing the relevance of these strategies across professions. It is divided into three parts – thinking about reflection; learning to reflect; and becoming a reflective practitioner. It offers fresh perspectives on conceptualizing reflective practice and suggests practical strategies for integrating it into pre-service coursework, assessment, training, and development. Intended for academics, practitioners, and educators across disciplines, this book serves as a comprehensive guide for anyone committed to fostering reflective practice within their professional sphere.

1% Leadership: Master the Small, Daily Improvements that Set Great Leaders Apart

by Andy Ellis

One of the most well-known and experienced cybersecurity leaders shares dozens of lessons and observations that anyone, at any stage of their career, can use to create a work culture of continuous improvement and strong leadership. Leadership development speaker & consultant Andy Ellis is the former CSO of Akamai, where he contributed to the creation of Akamai's billion‑dollar cybersecurity business. He now brings his speaking, consulting, and business knowledge to readers with 1% Leadership—based on the reality that real-world leadership is messy and complicated; it rarely fits into an acronym or a dogmatic overarching philosophy. Ellis says that there are no &“irrefutable laws&” of leadership or power; there is no secret. As a result, 1% Leadership does not provide one path to leadership—it provides dozens of practical lessons that anyone, at any stage of their career, can use continuously make tiny &“1% at a time&” improvements. 1% Leadership is a handy guidebook that business readers can regularly apply to identify blind spots, boost morale (both personal and among teams and organizations), and solve problems at work. Readers can spend a few minutes each Monday morning to focus on one lesson for their leadership development—perhaps that lesson only improves their performance by 1%; but it&’s those accumulated 1% improvements that separate the best leaders from everyone else. Lessons include: To engage in the present, be of two minds about the future. Worrying about failure will make success even more unlikely. Only by engaging in the present with that worry set aside can we find the path to success. Four days of great work now are rarely more important than four months of good work down the road. Show that long-term wellness matters. Performance development should be applied to every person on your team. Rather than treating the performance process as a way to identify and document poor performers, create a process that aims to improve and develop every person on your team.
