Relative Distance: A Memoir

by David Pruitt

Relative Distance is a powerful memoir of resilience and faith. While it’s an unflinching look at brothers being raised by a violent, abusive father and a detached, mentally ill mother, it’s also an inspiring account of two distinctive life journeys and an examination of the role played by family and society in individual homelessness. After surviving his tumultuous upbringing, David Pruitt rises to become a CEO in Corporate America, while his brother, Danny, becomes a long-time homeless traveler. As David helps to grow a fledgling North Carolina business into what is at the time the largest specialty bicycle retailer in the United States, Danny sleeps under overpasses, jumps passing freight cars, lives in and out of shelters, faces death more than once—and encounters the best and worst of America in a restless search to find a better place in the world. Yet, despite their differences, a common thread runs through the distinct trajectories of the brothers’ lives: each of them struggles with difficult psychological issues stemming from their troubled past. This deeply moving memoir examines the lifelong challenges that often come for those raised in an abusive home, along with the limitless possibilities we open ourselves to when we allow faith and determination to overcome judgment and fear.

Relax Into Wealth

by Alan Cohen

In Relax into Wealth, master storyteller Alan Cohen demonstrates the intrinsic link between passion, authenticity, and prosperity. He shows that nothing pays like . . . being yourself. This popular national speaker and bestselling writer delivers his prosperity principles in fifty-two true stories of successful people he has encountered, including celebrities, Midas-touch entrepreneurs, shuttle-bus drivers, wide-eyed children, and even a stripper. Then, in his unique way, Cohen highlights the lesson within each parable and expands upon it, enabling readers to apply the principle to their own lives. Cohen uses the story, the most cogent teaching device in history, to give readers an entertaining and accessible model. Relax into Wealth makes use of personal (and sometimes quite intimate) tales to capture the reader’s attention and impart the wisdom found in the experience. Each of its fifty-two anecdotes ends with a personal affirmation to help readers remember the lesson and carry it into real life. Most popular books on success in business or personal finance are formula-driven, focusing on techniques to make more money, climb the corporate ladder, or outpower competition. Relax into Wealth is character-driven, shining the spotlight on the kind of heart, faith, and vision required to overcome fear, peer pressure, limiting beliefs, or a history of failure. The book is about real people—in whom readers can recognize themselves—featuring moneymakers who have been true to their passion and successful in their chosen domain. Every reader will see his own financial hopes—and how to achieve them—in the lives of the various characters. .

The one characteristic all phenomenally successful people share is mental toughness. Mentally tough people are better at making decisions more quickly and with better results. In this book, top performance coach Jason Selk provides the insight, tools, and proven step-by-step framework for you to do the same. Relevance Regained

by H. Thomas Johnson

Building on his pathbreaking, award-winning bestseller, Relevance Lost, H. Thomas Johnson presents a devastating critique of the top-down hierarchical accounting systems that have dominated American corporations since the 1950s. Johnson shows exactly how "managing by remote control" through results-oriented accounting information has obscured and obstructed the real business objective: to reduce process variation and lead times for the purpose of obtaining and keeping satisfied customers. The failure of most American businesses to be competitive and profitable in recent years, he contends, is their reliance on management accounting information to control people's actions and productivity. Cost-focused imperatives from on high must be replaced, Johnson asserts, with information systems that link actions with imperatives of global competition. Past practices of manipulating processes to achieve accounting cost targets dictated by "top-down" command and control information must be replaced by "bottom-up" empowerment. Self-managing work teams, according to Johnson, must own problem-solving information to reduce variation, delays, and excess in processes. Johnson prescribes the necessary changes in management principles that must replace the outdated style associated with the industrial revolution. Responsiveness to customers -- not accounting costs -- and flexibility -- reducing lead times and removing constraints -- are necessary for sustained competitive excellence and long-term profitability. Johnson discusses the radical overhauls of companies, such as General Electric's work-outs/ "best practices" program, Eastman Kodak's process control costing, and Harley-Davidson's work simplification programs, and shows how these strong commitments to new strategies maximize a company's most important assets: people and time. To be globally competitive, he claims, a company's work must be directed toward selling to customers, not just selling products. Transaction- or product-oriented companies, according to Johnson, ultimately will lose out to responsive, customer-oriented ones.

Relevance of European Studies in Asia

by Indranath Gupta Maria Stoicheva S. G. Sreejith

This book provides perspectives on the relevance of European Studies as a disciplinary category for the Asian region. That being the primary focus, the book serves a larger purpose. First, it provides insights on European society, polity and economy (including European Integration) as they are accounted in European Studies. The epistemological character of the knowledge thus conveyed has larger credibility and reliability such that they can become policy inputs and imaginations for strengthening Asian-European relationship. This approach helps overcome the trap of subjectively motivated discourses on Europe which may fail potential collaborations between the regions. Second, the design and discursivity of European Studies will be an instruction to the Asian region on the constitutive potential of regional studies in society-building. Third, the book works towards building the idea of “Europe” in terms of international law, in the minds of Asian students, researchers and decision-makers. This is extremely relevant for the future relationship and cultural engagement between the two regions. The book is of interest to policymakers, academics, embassies, state-level government offices, researchers and students.

Relevance: The Power to Change Minds and Behavior and Stay Ahead of the Competition

by Andrea Coville

Today, when companies and customers are faced with an infinite number of messages, the word "relevance" has taken on a new meaning and dimension. We know that relevance matters, but what does that mean exactly? Andy Coville guides leaders and executives toward the realization that if they can focus on a single, guiding principle--a magnetic one--that permeates their brand or company, customers will not only engage but change thinking and behavior in turn. Relevance takes us through the dimensions of relevance--both qualitative and quantitative--in order to find the starting point on the Relevance Scale: where we are and where to go from here. The book walks the reader through the elements of staying relevant as well as the circumstances that contribute to establishing a relevance platform. The author offers many examples as well as explaining messaging strategies. Whether you are working with a consumer product, a nonprofit, or a B2B company, Andy Coville believes you, your brand, or your company have the power to change and influence behavior and make an impact.

This collection includes out of print and difficult to access primary and secondary sources on Rorem’s work, including his 1929 dissertation which presents his major, and still relevant writings on financial accounting theory and practice in a comprehensive, integrated context.

Relevent and LaLiga: Bringing Spanish Soccer to America

by Anita Elberse David Moreno Vicente

"Barcelona backs out of proposed LaLiga match in Miami." It is December 2018, and Daniel Sillman, chief executive officer of sports and entertainment company Relevent, is tasked with finding a way forward after a significant setback. Relevent had found success by convincing some of Europe's highest-profile soccer clubs to play pre-season matches in North America as part of its annual International Champions Cup (ICC), held during the summer months. Building on that success, Relevent is now seeking to bring at least one official LaLiga match to the U.S, each season-an effort that is a key pillar of Relevent's new, fifteen-year partnership with the Spanish soccer league, aimed at promoting the LaLiga brand in North America. However, the match that Relevent had selected to take place in Miami in January 2019, between FC Barcelona and Girona FC, had become a source of tension, drawing protests from the Spanish football federation, the Spanish players' association, and the president of worldwide governing body FIFA. Today, FC Barcelona's leadership team had announced the club would withdraw. Would Relevent find success in bringing a LaLiga match to the U.S.? And, more generally, did Relevent have the right approach to growing the LaLiga brand in North America?
