Retirement Watch: The Essential Guide to Retiring in the 2020s

by Bob Carlson

America&’s #1 retirement adviser offers tried and true investment strategies for before and after retirement. Sound guidance from the creator of RetirementWatch.com and the author of Where&’s My Money?: Secrets to Getting the Most Out of Your Social Security. The 2020s are likely to be among the worst times to be nearing retirement or in the early years of retirement. The book first explains the forces that are coming together to make it more difficult to create and maintain financial security and independence in retirement. The middle of the Baby Boomer generation will increase the pressure on every aspect of retirement. The early boomers began reaching 65 in 2011. Since then about 10,000 Boomers per day have been hitting 65. But the middle section of the Boomers is larger than the early Boomers. Beginning in 2024, an estimated 12,000 Baby Boomers will turn 65 each day. Already the foundations of retirement, Social Security and Medicare, are under stress. The rapid increase in the number of Boomers enrolling in these systems will increase the strain. In addition, the high returns in stocks and other investments since 2009 (and especially since 2017) make it likely that investment returns will be below their long-term averages during most of the 2020s. Further, interest rates on traditional retirement income investments, such as certificates of deposit, short-term government bonds, and money market funds, are the lowest they&’ve been in U.S. history and are likely to remain below their historic averages. In addition, taxes imposed by all levels of government are likely to increase during the 2020s. A longstanding myth is that a person&’s tax burden will decline in retirement. That hasn&’t been true for some time, and in the 2020s retirees are likely to face a range of tax increases. For a long time, many retirees left a lot of money on the table by making less-than-optimum decisions about Social Security, Medicare, IRAs, 401(k) rollovers, long-term care, and other key retirement issues. For example, a recent study done for United Income concluded that only four percent of Social Security beneficiaries made the optimum decision about when to claim retirement benefits. For the most part, the Boomers mistakes were bailed out by high stock market returns and low inflation. Retirees in the 2020s aren&’t likely to be so fortunate. Peak Boomers have to make the right decisions about all aspects of their retirement finances. This book will cover each of the key retirement planning issues faced in the five years before retirement and the first five years of retirement and guide readers to making the right decisions for them.

Retirement by Design: A Guided Workbook for Creating a Happy and Purposeful Future

by Ida Abbott

Find out how harnessing the powerful business principles of design thinking can make retirement your best chapter in life. There is no one right time or way to retire. Retirement is a major life transition; but if you spend the time designing a future filled with promise and possibilities, the prospect can be utterly exciting and revitalizing. In Retirement by Design, professional mentor and coach Ida Abbott shows you how the innovative business principles behind design thinking can be applied to plan a rich, fulfilling, and more meaningful retirement. Her guided workbook uses a business-like approach to leaving business, making your switch much smoother and less jolting. Whether you&’re considering a new place to settle down, working through financial planning, strategizing how to unwind a business, or deciding on which organizations you want to stay engaged with, making critical decisions takes a lot of organization, thought, and planning. Abbott shows how the five principles of design thinking will revolutionize your retirement-planning process: Empathy: Get inside the shoes of your future self. What will be important to that version of you? Define: Hone in on what is and will be most critical for you to focus on (whether it&’s volunteering, family, activities, or skills). Ideate: Draw, scribble, brainstorm, and throw around as many different retirement scenarios as you can come up with. Prototype: If retiring across the country in Arizona sounds perfect—try it out first. Come up with opportunities to test out your scenarios with short trips and trial time off. Test: This is the fun part—get back to the drawing board and try more retirement scenarios (and future versions of yourself) before sitting down to make those life-changing decisions. The new and innovative, self-coaching approach of Retirement by Design helps you spearhead and navigate a major next step in life. Whether your retirement is 10 years away or swiftly approaching, this workbook ensures you will create a future that is perfectly tailored to you.

Retirement for Two

by Maryanne Vandervelde

In Retirement for Two, psychologist Maryanne Vandervelde, author of the breakthrough book The Changing Life of the Corporate Wife, and human resources consultant, picks up where the standard retirement guides leave off. Vandervelde helps spouses-- nearing or already in retirement--confront, with honesty, respect, and humour, the conflicts and adjustments unique at this stage of life. Vandervelde doesn't give tax or estate planning, or 401K advice; that she leaves to the money men and women (she does deal with the emotional fallout of money and spending, like not having enough). She explores the challenges for couples, who upon retirement find they have many more choices than ever before, and therefore ample room for disagreement and disappointment. Even couples who think they've experienced it all are often suprised by retirements' special challenges. Retirement for Two offers commonsense advice, tackling such issues as: *Where will you live? Will you downsize? Move south or west? Split time between city and country? Live apart/together for some time each year? *What will you do with your time? *What will your relationships with kids and grandkids be like? *What kind of social life do you want? *What do you each desire for the rest of your lives? What happens when you want different things? Have different goals? *Sex and intimacy. *getting strong, staying healthy, dealing with a spouse's illness. Whether you are already grappling with post-work issues, or are approaching retirement age and thinking about how it is all going to work out, here is an invaluable tool you can use to help your relationship--and yourself--survive and thrive through some of the best years of your life.

Retirement in Japan and South Korea: The past, the present and the future of mandatory retirement

by Thomas R. Klassen Masa Higo

This book analyses reforms to retirement policies in Japan and South Korea, especially in the context of rapid population ageing. A defining feature of the labour markets and workplaces in these two nations, and the lives of workers and families, is involuntary retirement at relatively young ages. The book explains past developments and recent reforms of retirement policies both in the two countries, as well as in a cross-national comparative manner. At the core of the book is an examination of the social, economic and political conflicts around retirement, such as between younger and older workers, between employers and governments, and between employers and workers. The policy recommendations offered apply not only to Japan and South Korea, but also to other nations such as China. The volume is of value particularly for those interested in labour markets and workplaces, population ageing and contemporary East Asia, in addition to those studying retirement and pensions. Policymakers, business leaders, worker organizations, researchers and students will benefit from the insights about the past, present and future of retirement.

Retirement, Pensions and Justice

by Mark Hyde Rory Shand

This book addresses the tendency to mischaracterise liberalism as a "neoliberal" reform project, arguing that liberal political philosophy is concerned only to sustain the conditions that make individual freedom possible. This is illustrated with reference to the design of pensions. Considered in terms of liberal justice, retirement systems require redistributive transfers to help the poor, measures to ensure that retirees are rewarded on their merits, and provisions that treat everyone with equal dignity and respect. Rather than presenting liberal pensions as a close analogue to neoliberalism, this volume highlights their egalitarian virtues. This book will appeal to scholars of retirement and pensions, social policy, economics and political philosophy.

Retiring in a New Age: Life after Paid Work (Routledge Focus on Business and Management)

by Marian Baird Russell D. Lansbury

This book examines the concept of retirement, how it has changed, and what the future holds for the next generation of retirees. The book analyses government data and university surveys of more than 1,000 retirees in Australia and 4,000 retirees in Sweden, as well as in-depth interviews with retirees in each country. It demonstrates that while both countries have differences in their retirement policies and practices, as well as the outcomes for retirees, the process of retirement is undergoing change in both countries as people retire at a range of ages, but often then re-enter the workforce for various reasons. The book proposes four distinctive post-retirement orientations: Stayers, Leavers, Blenders and Disengaged retirees. It then discusses how individuals, employers and governments are responding to the challenges of ‘retiring in a new age’, suggesting policies and a new social contract for retirees that addresses their needs for economic security, physical and mental health, as well as engagement with the wider community.A book of keen interest to scholars of employment and work relations, human resource management, as well as labour economics. Policymakers and students interested in employment issues that affect economic and social equality will also find the book’s framework fit for use. Retiring: Creating a Life That Works for You

by Kathy E. Kram Douglas T. Hall Teresa M. Amabile Lotte Bailyn Marcy Crary

Retirement, as a major life transition, can be both thrilling and challenging in unexpected ways. Written by acclaimed authors in the fields of business leadership, careers, and work, this book goes beyond the typical financial and health-related advice on retirement, providing insights to guide you in broader areas of your life – identity issues, relationship challenges, and questions about creating a new retirement life structure that works for you. With lively, engaging writing, the book tells the detailed retirement transition stories of 14 people – and draws on over 200 interviews with 120 people – to explore how retiring involves a reconstruction of both the person and their life structure. You’ll gain wisdom on the common themes and the wildly different approaches people take to the four big tasks of retiring: making the retirement decision, detaching from work both tangibly and psychologically, building a new life structure for retirement, and settling into a relatively stable retirement life – but prepared to restructure again as life unfolds into the future. Throughout each chapter, you’ll see how the dynamic interplay of self, life structure, and external context affect a retiring person’s day-to-day experience in the final months of their career, as well as their early years of retirement – and how life satisfaction depends largely on alignment among the three. At the same time, you’ll learn how family, friends, and colleagues, as well as the organization the person is retiring from, can play a crucial role. This book is for you if you are seeking deep, nuanced insight into – and practical advice on – the psychological, social, and life-restructuring aspects of retirement that can make all the difference for life satisfaction. It is also for you if you are a family member or friend of a retiring person, a helping professional, or an organizational leader who cares about your older workers and the value they bring to your organization even as they depart.
