Peu connu, son travail s'oppose aux études antérieures qui se fondaient sur un auteur en particulier ou qui se concentraient sur la (re)traduction des Anciens. Utilisant un corpus de textes anglais publiés au XVIIIe siècle, Rochmondet présente une théorie de la traduction littéraire et élabore un vocabulaire original pour décrire la traduction. Bien plus qu'un simple manuel destiné à fournir des exercices de traduction aux étudiants de l'époque, les Études sur la traduction de l'anglais forment un ouvrage si complet que l'on ne peut que songer à une thèse ou à un ouvrage longuement mûri. On ne sait rien de l'auteure, sinon qu'elle se présente comme une femme qui aurait enseigné l'anglais et la traduction. Les textes qu'elle analyse laissent deviner une femme d'une grande érudition, au fait de la littérature anglaise. Sa connaissance de nombreux textes français portant sur la traduction montre également qu'elle a mené une réflexion approfondie sur le rôle de la traduction littéraire dans le cas particulier de la culture française. L'appareil critique de Benoit Léger montre en quoi la position de cette traductrice est novatrice. Une bibliographie des traductions et des textes théoriques publiés en France au XIXe siècle complète cette édition. Publié en français

Anders formuliert geht es um die grundsätzliche Frage danach, warum bestimmte Texte, Bilder, Zeichenkomplexe etc. eine Übersetzung erfahren, während andere unübersetzt bleiben (müssen). Welche Faktoren nehmen schließlich – im positiven Fall – Einfluss auf die konkrete Ausgestaltung von Übersetzung im Sinne des Übertragungsprozesses von einem semiotischen und kulturellen System in ein anderes? In diesem Zusammenhang kommt ein doppeltes Politikverständnis zum Tragen: einerseits geraten Übersetzungspolitik(en) im Sinne des Konzepts der Translation Policy in den Fokus und mit ihnen soziokulturelle, ökonomische und interkulturelle Einflussfaktoren. Andererseits geht es – spezifischer – um Übersetzungen im Kontext politischer Verhandlungs- und Aushandlungsprozesse und somit um den Zusammenhang zwischen Politics und Translation. Dabei versucht es die moderne Funktion der Gegenöffentlichkeit auch von ihrem Ursprung her zu denken, wie sie etwa in der Figur eines Sokrates oder im Höhlengleichnis Platons als „Gewaltsamkeit‟ von Unter- und Oberwelt vorformuliert wurde. Der Rekurs auf den ‚Ursprung‛ der Mainstream- und Alternativmedien ist kein historizistisches, akademisches, altphilologisches Unternehmen, das von Griechenland aus hereingaloppierend in unserer Zeit endet. Vielmehr beschreibt er die Fassade der Mainstreammedien, hinter der eine Entwicklung im Gegensinn, zum archaischen Grund hin verläuft und auf den heute die Alternativmedien in ihrer Kritik eine Antwort suchen.
