Communications Media, Globalization, and Empire
by Oliver Boyd-BarrettAn exploration of the political economy of media, and to what extent global communications and popular entertainment continue to serve elite interests. In Communications Media, Globalization, and Empire, an international team of experts analyzes and critiques the political economy of media communications worldwide. Their analysis takes particular account of the sometimes conflicting pressures of globalization and “neo-imperialism.” The first is commonly defined as the dismantling of barriers to trade and cultural exchange and responds significantly to lobbying of the world’s largest corporations, including media corporations. The second concerns US pursuit of national security interests as response to “terrorism,” at one level and, at others, to intensifying competition among both nations and corporations for global natural resources.
Communications Satellites: Global Change Agents (LEA Telecommunications Series)
by Peter Marshall Joseph N. Pelton Robert J. OslundOver the past 40 years, satellites have played a key role in creating a global culture, spreading worldwide entertainment, stimulating technological interchange, and promoting trade around the world. Communications Satellites: Global Change Agents addresses communications satellites not only in terms of the technology and the services they provide, but also with consideration of the technology's impact in socio-political, security, economic, policy, news, entertainment, and cultural spheres.Editors Joseph N. Pelton, Robert J. Oslund, and Peter Marshall bring together contributions that place satellites into a broad context and examine how they influence and define today's world. Written in a non-technical, reader-friendly style, chapters investigate how satellite communications work and explore the role of satellites in such arenas as:*news and entertainment systems around the world;*Internet, E-business, and the new global economy;*global television and radio channels;*military operations; and*education, health services, economic development, and electronic immigration.Communications Satellites: Global Change Agents examines what satellites have been and projects how they will evolve in the future, articulating what they mean to the world today and forecasting what they will mean tomorrow. As the definitive source on communications satellites and their role in today's world, this volume serves as a valuable, unique, and timely resource for scholars and students in telecommunications, communication and technology, mass communication and society, and broadcasting.

Communications, Navigation, Sensing and Services (River Publishers Series In Communications Ser.)
by R. Prasad L. P. LigthartDuring the last decade there was a shift from wireless and mobile communications technology, networks and applications towards integration of radio with other disciplines. Integration of navigation, sensing and services allow for entering new areas in which many requirements from individuals and organizations are satisfied.Potential applications are manifold. Developments for realizing these new application areas will cause a boost on new systems demonstrating the potentials of this integration approach. In this first book the fundamentals of this new approach on integrated communication, navigation, sensing and services (Conasense) will be elucidated. Furthermore, several applications illustrate some of the aims of Conasense. Two major areas have been selected1. Quality of life2. Intelligent Conasense architecturesTopics in the book on 'quality of life' include:• Visionary plans on health, security, neurophysics, indoor and outdoor safeguarding: in all these areas new Conasense technology and systems are essential.Topics in the book on intelligent Conasense architectures concern:• a framework describing novelties in Conasense technology needed to realize the aimed improve in 'quality of life'.• Breakthroughs on full integration of space-based and terrestrial communication and navigation systems with advanced high resolution sensing of the local environment supplemented with geographical information at regionals, national and international scales.
Communications, Radar and Electronic Warfare
by Adrian GrahamA practical guide to the principles of radio communications for both civilian and military applicationsIn this book, the author covers both the civilian and military uses of technology, focusing particularly on the applications of radio propagation and prediction. Divided into two parts, the author introduces the basic theory of radio prediction before providing a step-by-step explanation of how this theory can be translated into real-life applications. In addition, the book presents up-to-date systems and methods to illustrate how these applications work in practice. This includes systems working in the HF bands and SHF. Furthermore, the author examines the performance of these systems, and also the effects of noise, interference and deliberate jamming, as well as the performance of jamming, detection and intercept systems. Particular attention is paid to the problems caused by Radio Controlled Improvised Explosive Devices (RCIEDs).Key Features:A practical handbook on the topic of radio communications and propagationWritten by an expert in both the civilian and military applications of the technologyFocuses on methods such as radio and radar jamming, and radio-controlled improvised explosive devices (IEDs)Contains problems and solutions to clarify key topics

Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC): Automation of metros and urban rapid transit systems
by Lars SchniederUrban rail systems are increasingly reaching their limits as traffic demand rises. The safety and performance of these transport systems are significantly determined by the control and safety technology used. Expanding the transport offering requires efficient signaling systems, known as Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) systems. In this book, the author presents the system environment into which CBTC systems are integrated within urban transport companies. It shows how the individual safety functions of CBTC solutions contribute to hazard control and how technical systems progressively take over more functions from humans with increasing grades of automation. Finally, non-functional requirements for CBTC systems such as safety, availability, performance, and cost-effectiveness are discussed, and factors for the successful execution of complex signaling renewal projects are highlighted.
Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC): Komponenten, Funktionen und Betrieb
