Innovation District Planning: Concept, Framework, Practice

by Tan Yigitcanlar Surabhi Pancholi Niusha Esmaeilpoorarabi Rosemary Adu-McVie

This book aims to fill the knowledge gap on how to plan, develop and manage innovation districts that are competitive in terms of both productivity and quality of living, justifying the massive investment put into place and at the same time doing both in a delicate and harmonious way. There is a need for smart urban land use that is wired with both hard infrastructures (e.g., telecommunication and transport) and soft infrastructures (e.g., diversity and tolerance). The reader learns this knowledge through conceptual expansions for key insights, frameworks for potential and performance assessment and best practices for global innovation districts. The authors begin innovation district planning with the role and effectiveness of planning a branding in the development of innovation districts. The next key topic of place making is recognised as a key strategy for supporting knowledge generation and innovation activities in the contemporary innovation districts. Another important topic is place quality where the reader learns to identify and classify indicators of place quality by studying global innovation districts best practices. The reader also expands their understanding on the classification of innovation districts based on their key characteristics through a methodological approach. The book concludes with district smartness studied through the socio-cultural role played by anchor universities in facilitating place making in innovation districts. Smart campuses, enabled by digital transformation opportunities in higher education, are seen as a miniature replica of smart cities and serve as living labs for smart technology. The book serves as a repository for scholars, researchers, postgraduate and undergraduate students as it communicates the complex innovation district phenomenon in an easy-to-digest form by providing both the big picture view and specifics of each component of that view.

Innovation Empowerment in Construction 4.0 by the CDR-Approach: A new field of scientific Research for the digital breakthrough

by Bianca Christina Weber-Lewerenz

This is a publication-based dissertation. The book examines the promotion of innovation in construction 4.0 through the CDR approach. This opens up a new scientific research field for digital breakthroughs. It raises awareness, explains and enables access to innovative technologies such as digitalization and AI in the construction industry and highlights the associated ethical aspects. This research comes to the conclusion that the human factor forms the basis for designing a socially sustainable digital transformation. The new findings show how innovative technology can support people more efficiently, productively, safely and meaningfully. It specifically addresses responsibility in the corporate environment and develops the key factors for success without neglecting the necessary legal, political, social and educational framework. The aim of this book is to improve and strengthen the transfer of knowledge between research and practice on the basis of scientific communication without language barriers. In this way, the book offers broader access for readers, not only for experts, researchers, designers, implementers, doers and visionaries. The book encourages an interdisciplinary, integrative and constructive dialogue in order to avoid disciplinary silo thinking. The diversity of potential and innovations in the industry is offset by the industry's enormous responsibility to use sustainable, human-controlled AI to achieve the 17 UN SDGs and climate goals and to increase its global competitiveness on the basis of a European quality seal. Surprise and aha effects are inevitable. The book invites key players, everyone involved and everyone who sets new standards, to help shape the digital change in the construction industry and become innovative. The book promotes a new culture of thinking and learning and strengthens the entrepreneurial will to innovate. Opening a new gap in scientific knowledge with this book ultimately leads to a new discipline. In addition, it expands the interdisciplinary dialogue around the globe to find new ways to assume corporate digital responsibility and adapt the framework conditions. The book provides new ideas for defining individual digital corporate strategies.

Innovation In Global Industries: U.s. Firms Competing In A New World

by National Research Council of the National Academies

The debate over offshoring of production, transfer of technological capabilities, and potential loss of U.S. competitiveness is a long-running one. Prevailing thinking is that “the world is flat”—that is, innovative capacity is spreading uniformly; as new centers of manufacturing emerge, research and development and new product development follow. Innovation in Global Industries challenges this thinking. The book, a collection of individually authored studies, examines in detail structural changes in the innovation process in 10 service as well as manufacturing industries: personal computers; semiconductors; flat-panel displays; software; lighting; biotechnology; pharmaceuticals; financial services; logistics; and venture capital. There is no doubt that overall there has been an acceleration in global sourcing of innovation and an emergence of new locations of research capacity and advanced technical skills, but the patterns are highly variable. Many industries and some firms in nearly all industries retain leading-edge capacity in the United States. However, the book concludes that is no reason for complacency about the future outlook. Innovation deserves more emphasis in firm performance measures and more sustained support in public policy. Innovation in Global Industries will be of special interest to business people and government policy makers as well as professors, students, and other researchers of economics, management, international affairs, and political science.

This book reports on 12 education innovation cases in Taiwan and focus particularly on an ecosystem to demonstrate innovation as a competitive advantage and requires an ecosystem to be sustainable in virtually all disciplines. It also covers the trend of education innovation in many countries, with “education entrepreneurship” being the frequently used description. The 12 educators highlighted here are even more entrepreneurial than many businesspeople. Generally, schools are required to follow certain rules, especially the public schools. Accordingly, the book also describes how these education entrepreneurs have innovatively created a fostering environment under challenging constraints to facilitate the success of students, teachers, and even the local community. Six of the cases involve school-based innovation, while the other six focus on student-based innovation. Their stories provide valuable insights for all companies seeking to become more innovative in a resource-constrained setting.

Innovation and Export: The Joint Challenge of the Small Company

by Manon Enjolras

The concepts of innovation and export are traditionally considered in isolation, both within companies and within the support organizations dedicated to them. As a result, within this broad research field, very little academic work has focused on how to implement their relationship at an operational level. This book proposes a joint diagnostic tool for SMEs, highlighting good practices to be mastered in order to simultaneously improve innovation and export performance, in the form of a virtuous circle. Innovation and Export focuses on the integration of innovation and export into the strategic management of SMEs, for which the use of synergies is a powerful lever to overcome any difficulties in mobilizing significant resources.
