systemd for Linux SysAdmins: All You Need to Know About the systemd Suite for Linux Users

by David Both

Explore the world of systemd—yes, all lower-case, even at the beginning of a sentence— which is the modern replacement for init and SystemV init scripts. It is also much more. It can evoke a wide range of reactions from SysAdmins and others responsible for keeping Linux systems up and running. The fact that systemd is taking over so many tasks in modern Linux systems has engendered push-back and discord among certain groups of developers and SysAdmins. You will learn systemd&’s strengths and weaknesses, and why there&’s no truth in the myth that systemd is a monolithic monstrosity.Learn how systemd is the mother of all processes, and is responsible for bringing the Linux host up to a state in which productive work can be done. You&’ll learn about the functions assumed by systemd, which is far more extensive than the old init program, and how it manages many aspects of a running Linux host, including: Mounting filesystems Managing hardware Creating new systemd services and understanding existing ones Creating timers that trigger system maintenance events Starting and managing the system services that are required to have a productive Linux host Using the systemd journal to access critical performance and problem solving information. Why the systemd plan to take over the world is actually a good thing systemd for Linux SysAdmins is your one-stop shop, giving you everythiing you need to get started and utilize this software suite for Linux operatiing systems. You Will Learn: How to use systemd, what it is, and what it does To manage each of the major functional components of systemd and learn from real-world examples to illustrate their typical usage by SysAdmins Pragmatic work-arounds, hints and tricks to minimize issues to ensure you have greater systemd functionality This Book is for: Linux system administrators (SysAdmins) who need to or are already in the process of switching from SystemV to systemd. Systemic Approach to Categorizing and Modeling Requirements (ISTE Invoiced)

by Azeddine Chikh

Current categorizations of software requirements are highly ambiguous and inconsistent, mainly due to the lack of a clear, common framework for defining software elements and relevant environmental factors. This book overhauls the traditional approach by proposing an innovative systemic method for categorizing and modeling software requirements. It introduces an unprecedented frame of reference, putting an end to divergent interpretations by precisely defining software elements and environmental factors. This framework forms an indispensable basis for all the other components of this approach: a redefinition of requirements, a hybrid categorization that combines several taxonomies and scales, a metadata model used to qualify requirements, and a multi-view model that represents all possible categories of requirements. By adopting this new approach, professionals will be able to improve the clarity, precision and relevance of their specifications, and thus optimize the success of their software projects.

The Systemic Image: A New Theory of Interactive Real-Time Simulations

by Inge Hinterwaldner

Computer simulations conceive objects and situations dynamically, in their changes and progressions. In The Systemic Image, Inge Hinterwaldner considers not only the technical components of dynamic computer simulations but also the sensory aspects of the realization. Examining the optic, the acoustic, the tactile, and the sensorimotor impressions that interactive real-time simulations provide, she finds that iconicity plays a dominant yet unexpected role. Based on this, and close readings of a series of example works, Hinterwaldner offers a new conceptualization of the relationship between systemic configuration and the iconic aspects in these calculated complexes.Hinterwaldner discusses specifications of sensorialization, necessary to make the simulation dynamic perceivable. Interweaving iconicity with simulation, she explores the expressive possibilities that can be achieved under the condition of continuously calculated explicit changes. She distinguishes among four levels of forming: the systems perspective, as a process and schema that establishes the most general framework of simulations; the mathematical model, which marks off the boundaries of the simulation's actualization; the iconization and its orientation toward the user; and interaction design, necessary for the full unfolding of the simulation. The user makes manifest what is initially latent. Viewing the simulation as an interface, Hinterwaldner argues that not only does the sensorially designed aspect of the simulation seduce the user but the user also makes an impact on the simulation -- on the dynamic and perhaps on the iconization, although not on the perspectivation. The influence is reciprocal.

Systemprogrammierung mit Delphi: Hardwarezugriff über Windows-API und Windows-Kernelmodus-Treiber

by Devid Espenschied

Systems Analysis Approach for Complex Global Challenges

by Priscilla Mensah David Katerere Sepo Hachigonta Andreas Roodt

This book, which contains a collection of review articles as well as focus on evidence-based policy making, will serve as a valuable resource not just for all postgraduate students conducting research using systems analysis thinking but also for policy makers. To our knowledge, a book of this nature which also has a strong African focus is currently not available. The book examines environmental and socio-economic risks with the aim of providing an analytical foundation for the management and governance of natural resources, disasters, addressing climate change, and easing the technological and ecological transitions to sustainability. It provides scientific and strategic analysis to better understand the dynamics of future energy transitions, their main driving forces, enabling factors, barriers, as well as their consequences for the social, economic and environmental dimensions of human wellbeing. Science-based policy advice is achieved through an integrated assessment and modeling of how to simultaneously address the major energy policy challenges in the areas of environment (climate change and air pollution), energy poverty (or access to affordable and clean energy for the poor), energy security and reliability. It also aims to improve our understanding of ecosystems and their management in today’s changing world—in particular, the current state of ecosystems, and their ecological thresholds and buffering capacities. It provides support for policy makers in developing rational, realistic and science-based regional, national and global strategies for the production of fuel, food and fibre that sustain ecosystem services and safeguard food security. Finally, it addresses the human development dimension of global change based on comprehensive studies on the changing size and composition of human populations around the world by analyzing both their impacts and the differential vulnerabilities by age, gender and level of education.

Systems and Computer Science: Proceedings of a Conference held at the University of Western Ontario September 10-11, 1965

by John Hart Satoru Takasu

This book presents the papers delivered at the Conference on Systems and Computer Science held at the University of Western Ontario in September 1965. The primary purposes of the Conference were the promotion of research and the development of the teaching of computer science in Canadian universities. The papers focus attention on some of the concepts of Computer Science as a new field of study and at the same time provide a background for scientists looking at the subject for the first time. The chief developments in computer science have been concerned with the "applied" rather than the "pure" areas of the field: numerical analysis, applied statistics and operations research, and data processing. But there is something more to computers than the physical components and this book represents an attempt to correct the imbalance between "applied" and "pure" by drawing attention to certain theoretical aspects of computer and information science. Among the topics discussed are the theory of finite and infinite automata, aspects of formal language theory, heuristic and non-heuristic approaches to theorem proving and the mathematical formulation of the theory of general systems. There are also references to the problems of machine design, to software systems including higher-level languages, to multiple control computer models and to applied systems. This collection of papers will appeal first to graduate students and professors in Computer Science. It will also be of interest to computer scientists in industry and in government and university research groups and to the scientific public interested in discovering some of the principal ingredients and directions of the computer and information sciences.

In the second i3-MARKET series book we review the basic technological principles, software best practices, and standards for implementing and deploying data spaces and data marketplaces. The book provides a definition for data-driven society as: The process to transform data production into data economy for the people using the emerging technologies and scientific advances in data science to underpin the delivery of data economic models and services. This book further discusses why data spaces and data marketplaces are the focus in today’s data-driven society as the trend to rapidly transform the data perception in every aspect of our activities. In this book, technology assets that are designed and implemented following the i3-MARKET backplane reference implementation (WebRI) that uses open data, big data, IoT and AI design principles is introduced. Moreover, the series of software assets grouped as sub-systems and composed by software artefacts are included and explained in full. Further, we describe i3-MARKET backplane tools and how these can be used for supporting marketplaces and its components including details of available data assets. Next, we provide descriptions of solutions developed in i3-MARKET as an overview of the potential for being the reference open-source solution to improve data economy across different data marketplaces.

Within this context, Systems and Network Infrastructure Integration presents the methodological and theoretical principles necessary to successfully carry out an integration project for network and systems infrastructures. This book is aimed at anyone interested in the field of networks in general. In particular, it is intended for students of fields relating to networks and computer systems who are called upon to integrate their knowledge and skills, gained throughout their academic study, into a comprehensive project to set up a complete infrastructure, while respecting the necessary specifications.

Systems and Software Quality

by Martin Wieczorek Diederik Vos Heinz Bons

Software and systems quality is playing an increasingly important role in the growth of almost all ─ profit and non-profit ─ organisations. Quality is vital to the success of enterprises in their markets. Most small trade and repair businesses use software systems in their administration and marketing processes. Every doctor's surgery is managing its patients using software. Banking is no longer conceivable without software. Aircraft, trucks and cars use more and more software to handle their increasingly complex technical systems. Innovation, competition and cost pressure are always present in on-going business decisions. The question facing all these organisations is how to achieve the right quality of their software-based systems and products; how to get the required level of quality, a level that the market will reward, a level that mitigates the organisation's risks and a level that the organisation is willing to pay for. Although a number of good practices are in place, there is still room for huge improvements. Thus, let us take a look into the two worlds of "Embedded systems" and "ICT systems" and let us learn from both worlds, from overlaps and individual solutions. The next step for industrialisation in the software industry is required now. Hence, three pillars will be focused in this book: (1) a fundamental notion of right software and systems quality (RiSSQ); (2) portfolio management, quality governance, quality management, and quality engineering as holistic approach over the three layers of an enterprise, i. e. strategic, tactical, and operational layer; and (3) an industrialisation framework for implementing our approach.
