Fat

by Deborah Lupton

In contemporary western societies, the fat body has become a focus of stigmatizing discourses and practices aimed at disciplining, regulating and containing it. Despite the fact that in many western countries fat bodies outnumber those that are thin, fat people are still socially marginalized, and treated with derision and even repulsion and disgust. Medical and public health experts continue to insist that an ‘obesity epidemic’ exists and that fatness is a pathological condition which should be prevented and controlled. Fat is a book about why the fat body has become so reviled and reviewed as diseased, the target of such intense discussion and debate about ways to reduce its size down to socially and medically acceptable dimensions. It is about the lived experience of fat embodiment: how does it feel to be fat in a fat phobic-society? Fat activism and obesity politics, and related controversies, are also discussed. Internationally-renowned sociologist Deborah Lupton explores fat as a sociocultural artefact: a bodily substance or body shape that is given meaning by complex and shifting systems of ideas, practices, emotions, material objects and interpersonal relationships. This analysis identifies broader preoccupations and trends in the ways that human bodies and selfhood are experienced and practised. The second and much expanded edition of Fat is twice as long as the original edition. Lupton incorporates the very latest current critical scholarship and research offered in the humanities and social sciences on fat embodiment and fat politics. New updated material is presented in every chapter, including substantial additional sections on new digital media. Fat is a lively, at times provocative introduction for the general reader, as well as for students and academics interested in the politics of embodiment and health.

Fat Bloke Slims: How I Lost Three Stone

by Bruce Byron

Bruce Byron is a popular character in The Bill. He's about three to four stones overweight, nearing fifty and, in his own words, a heart attack waiting to happen. 'You see, I have a weight issue - the issue being that I have too much of it. Currently in the UK around six in ten men are medically defined as overweight and one in six as obese. Obesity in the UK has more than doubled in the past eighteen years, amongst blokes it's tripled and with this come increased risks to our health including heart disease - the UK's biggest killer. According to my friends at the British Heart Foundation, heart disease kills one in five males. It is responsible for 32% of premature deaths in males. Someone in the UK has a heart attack every two minutes. That could be me. So, here we are. This is the documented journey of a soon to be fifty-year-old, seriously overweight man who works long hours and wants to be around to see his children grow up, a man who wants to play and do exciting activities with my family, enjoy growing old with my beautiful wife and be around long enough to enjoy the rewards of our very hard-earned success.Today's the day I stop making excuses.'

The Fat Boy’s Book: How Elmer Lost 40 Pounds in 80 Days

by Elmer Wheeler

Where and Why The Fat Boy's Book was written...Sitting quietly at Chambers of Commerce luncheons and banquets, waiting my turn on the lecture platform, gave me the idea of the need for a Fat Boy's Book.I began to observe around me the hodge-podge collection of "banker's shapes," affluent men who had made good, then relaxed and put on bay windows. Then I looked at myself. It was nice to see so much success in America, Land of Big Appetites and Opportunity, but, unfortunately, success had settled at the belt lines. So, surrounded by my best inspirations, I started to write, and many a Chamber secretary will now know for the first time what I was scribbling on the back of the song sheet "God Bless America!" It was The Fat Boy's Book.BE A MAN OF DISTINCTION: SWITCH FROM FAT TO TRIM

Fat Chance: Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity, and Disease

by Robert H. Lustig

New York Times BestsellerRobert Lustig's 90-minute YouTube video "Sugar: The Bitter Truth", has been viewed more than three million times. Now, in this much anticipated book, he documents the science and the politics that has led to the pandemic of chronic disease over the last 30 years. In the late 1970s when the government mandated we get the fat out of our food, the food industry responded by pouring more sugar in. The result has been a perfect storm, disastrously altering our biochemistry and driving our eating habits out of our control. To help us lose weight and recover our health, Lustig presents personal strategies to readjust the key hormones that regulate hunger, reward, and stress; and societal strategies to improve the health of the next generation. Compelling, controversial, and completely based in science, Fat Chance debunks the widely held notion to prove "a calorie is NOT a calorie", and takes that science to its logical conclusion to improve health worldwide.

Fat, Crazy, and Tired: Tales from the Trenches of Transformation

by Van Lathan Jr.

Podcaster and former TMZ host Van Lathan Jr. writes a sharp, funny, and brutally honest, cultural critique of the unspoken obstacles and extreme anxiety that keep us from maintaining good health in America&’s &“wellness waistland,&” explored through vignettes about his mental health and weight loss journey as a Black man. A formerly chubby kid who self‑identified for much of his life as &“the fat friend,&” media personality and podcast host Van Lathan Jr. has struggled with physical and mental health his entire life. He was used to being his besties' wing man on the dating scene, the slack bench‑dweller at the gym, and his mother's biggest fan at every meal, especially whenever she served up her infamous mac and cheese with five different kinds of cheese. At 365 lbs, Van hated being fat so much, he found it harder than being Black! After dedicating years to improving his physical and mental health, with many ups and downs, in 2020 Van found himself in a shared slump with other Americans when the Covid-19 pandemic hit and the George Floyd video was released—suddenly he was surrounded by carbs galore, binge-ing everything, feeling non‑stop exhaustion, and crippling waves of anxiety and depression. Fat, Crazy, and Tired isn't just about Van's ultimately unsuccessful journey to an Instagram‑able body and zen; it's about the unspoken personal battlefield of attaining and maintaining what Americans deem as good health. He explores the real reasons behind our unending physical and mental health battles—culture, family, and the baggage of life—and demonstrates how we can better understand our bodies by better understanding ourselves. He takes it back to his southern upbringing in Baton Rouge, opens up about how being &“the Black guy&” at work at TMZ overshadowed his identity, and shares how he holds up to survive the madness.&“Detox&” cleanses? Weight loss pills? Celery juice? No, thank you. Unlike the self‑help gurus that push you to go &“all or nothing&” and &“keep it 100,&” Van wants you to be happier and healthier at 50% without totally admonishing yourself to get there. Packed with double doses of humor Fat, Crazy, and Tired shares abrutally honest cultural critique of mental health and our weight loss obsession in what he dubs America&’s &“wellness waistland.&”

Fat Dad, Fat Kid

by Shay Butler Gavin Butler

In today's world where fast-food restaurants, soda, and processed foods reign supreme, does "fat dad" have to mean "fat kid"? Digital entrepreneur and beloved vlogger Shay Butler and his preteen son, Gavin, decided to find out the answer for themselves. Before Shay became famous for vlogging about life with his boisterous brood of five, known on YouTube as the Shaytards, he was like many other American dads: He worked 9 to 5 to pay the bills, ate double bacon cheeseburgers during his lunch breaks, sipped soda throughout the day, and watched Netflix with handfuls of candy. These small behaviors added up, and before he turned thirty, Shay was nearly 300 pounds. Motivated by the fear that he could have a heart attack before thirty-five, Shay decided to make incremental changes to his eating habits and exercise regimen. Adopting the attitude that every action, no matter how small, was better than what he was doing before, Shay lost more than 100 pounds and ran four marathons, becoming a source of inspiration for everyone who followed his journey on his ShayLoss channel on YouTube. Now, at the age of thirty-five, Shay has discovered that "maintaining" is the hard part. He has also seen how some of his hard-to-break habits are affecting his children, particularly his eldest son, Gavin, who grew up during the years when his dad had "a little extra Shay on him." Determined to get back into shape and inspire his son along the way, Shay asked Gavin to embark on a thirty-day challenge with him to eat clean and do thirty minutes of exercise a day. Full of Shay's signature blend of humor, honesty, and unbridled enthusiasm, Fat Dad, Fat Kid chronicles the ups and downs of Shay and Gavin's thirty days together, reflects on Shay's lifelong struggle with health and fitness, and proves that it's never too late for parents or children to embrace a healthier lifestyle--even when it doesn't come easy.

Fat Family/Fit Family

by Ron Morelli Becky Morelli Max Morelli Mike Morelli

The inspiring true story behind the weight-loss saga chronicled on NBC's blockbuster show, The Biggest Loser. There's no getting past it: the Morellis were a fat family. From cookie dough and pizza binges to extreme plastic surgeries, Ron, Becky, Mike and Max Morelli experienced the swinging pendulum of weight loss that so many Americans know all too well. But when Ron and Mike were accepted as contestants on The Biggest Loser, the Morellis' lives changed forever. Ron, at 430 pounds, and 18-year-old Mike, at 388 pounds, made it to the final four, losing a whopping 399 pounds combined. Fat Family/Fit Family also tells the story of wife Becky and youngest son, Max-the story not seen on TV, but relatable to scores of American families, the story of what happens when two foodaholics meet, fall in love, get married and raise (almost inevitably) foodaholic kids. Sharing the eye-opening perspective of each family member, Fat Family/Fit Family chronicles the Morellis' amazing journey in dropping over 700 pounds together, from the emotional and physical struggles of obesity to the triumph of their newfound healthy lifestyle. Obesity doesn't just happen in a vacuum-it starts in homes like the Morellis, and it can end there, too. Fat Family/Fit Family is an ultimately inspiring story about the healing power of family. .

Fat in Four Cultures: A Global Ethnography of Weight (Teaching Culture: UTP Ethnographies for the Classroom)

by Cindi SturtzSreetharan Alexandra Brewis Jessica Hardin Sarah Trainer Amber Wutich

Traits that signal belonging dictate our daily routines, including how we eat, move, and connect to others. In recent years, "fat" has emerged as a shared anchor in defining who belongs and is valued versus who does not and is not. The stigma surrounding weight transcends many social, cultural, political, and economic divides. The concern over body image shapes not only how we see ourselves, but also how we talk, interact, and fit into our social networks, communities, and broader society. Fat in Four Cultures is a co-authored comparative ethnography that reveals the shared struggles and local distinctions of how people across the globe are coping with a bombardment of anti-fat messages. Highlighting important differences in how people experience "being fat," the cases in this book are based on fieldwork by five anthropologists working together simultaneously in four different sites across the globe: Japan, the United States, Paraguay, and Samoa. Through these cases, Fat in Four Cultures considers what insights can be gained through systematic, cross-cultural comparison. Written in an eye-opening and narrative-driven style, with clearly defined and consistently used key terms, this book effectively explores a series of fundamental questions about the present and future of fat and obesity.
