Contemporary Global Perspectives on Cooperative Learning: Applications Across Educational Contexts (Routledge Research in Education)

by Neil Davidson Robyn M. Gillies Barbara Millis

This volume captures contemporary global developments in cooperative learning (CL) across varied educational contexts, levels, and disciplines. Cooperative learning is widely recognized as a pedagogical practice that promotes socialization and learning among students, from kindergarten to tertiary education and across different subject domains. With chapters from contributors throughout the Global North and South, this comprehensive volume offers a wide-ranging perspective and addresses a range of cooperative learning pedagogies including relational, online, and peer learning, STAD, the Jigsaw model, and dialogic talk. The chapters draw on novel empirical research and theory to highlight best practices in cooperative learning, whilst also considering the challenges, limitations, and factors which drive or inhibit learner engagement and success. Consistent attention is given to the pivotal role of the educator in implementing cooperative learning to maximum benefit to enhance students’ affective, social, cognitive, and metacognitive learning. Thus, this book will appeal to scholars and researchers across a variety of subjects; and will provide an additional benefit to in-service and pre-service educators who already practice cooperative learning in their classrooms, as well as those who are interested in implementing the model.

Contemporary Issues Of Migration And Theology

by Peter C. Phan Elaine Padilla

Along with globalization migration poses unprecedented challenges to the Christian churches in the fields of constructive theology, ethics, spirituality, mission, ministry, interreligious dialogue, and theological education. How can the Christian churches successfully meet these challenges posed by global migratory movements? In suggesting ways that help the churches fulfill this task, the essays in this volume draw from a variety of streams of thought, including liberationist, postmodern, and postcolonial theologies, and from a wide range of contexts, such as the U. S. , Latin America, and Asia. They probe new ways of interpreting the Bible, the contributions of migrants to Christianity, the function of the city in religious developments, ways of being Christian, Christian mission, theological method, and theological education. The result is a theology of migration that is appropriate for the emerging World Christianity, as its approach is interdisciplinary, interdenominational, interreligious, and intercontinental.

Contemporary Issues in Comparative Education: A Festschrift in Honour of Professor Emeritus Vernon Mallinson (Routledge Library Editions: Comparative Education #19)

by Keith Watson Raymond Wilson

Originally published in 1985. In the last two decades education in the Third World has greatly expanded, raising many important issues. Some less developed countries have emulated the West in the style and organisation of their academic systems, hence, it could be said, increasing their dependence. Others have deliberately avoided this path, experimenting with systems more relevant to development and often in a radical way. At a theoretical level, Marxist and neo-Marxist development theorists argue that education systems dependent on the West are evidence of economic dependency and of the correctness of Marxist development theories; while others argue that the evidence points to an interdependent world and that dependency theories do not apply to education. Interestingly two key Marxist Third World Countries, China and Cuba, have very conservative education systems. This book discusses the problems of dependence and interdependence in education throughout the world.

Contemporary Issues in Early Childhood Education in Germany

by Wilfried Smidt

The importance of early childhood education has been emphasized by a large body of research that has demonstrated that children’s cognitive and socio-emotional development is significantly influenced by the quality of the education and care received from their families and in preschool. Consequently, it is important to investigate factors that pertain to the provision of a high-quality education and high-quality care for young children. This book addresses several important issues that are currently under discussion with respect to this topic. In particular, the book focuses on three topics presently under debate: the professionalization of pedagogues working in the field of early childhood education; the quality of education and care provided by families and preschools; and the promotion of children from socio-economically disadvantaged families. Providing an excellent overview of current research in Germany, this book will be useful to readers who are interested in international perspectives on early childhood education and who want to gain insight into relevant topics discussed in other countries. This book was originally published as a special issue of Early Child Development and Care.

Contemporary Issues in Equity, Democracy, and Public Education: Multidisciplinary Perspectives from Education, Social Sciences, and Health

by Fadie T. Coleman Elsa Wiehe Felicity A. Crawford

Contemporary Issues in Equity, Democracy, and Public Education explores how inequity manifests in public education and social institutions, and how this inequity impacts the health and wellbeing of citizens, including marginalized people. Demonstrating how inequity thereby threatens democracy, this book also poses suggestions for improving equity in U.S. education.Taking a multidisciplinary approach to historical and contemporary sources of inequity that operate in social institutions and public policy, this carefully curated volume shows how disparities in education levels, income, housing, and health have consequences that reverberate through individuals’ lives, and thereby undermine a democratic way of life. Contributions from a wide variety of experts offer approaches to solving these problems, as well as curricular innovations for identifying and alleviating systemic inequities. Part 1 begins by examining the origins and persistence of systemic inequity in U.S. public education, while Part 2 highlights the physiological, psychological, and social impacts of systemic bias, and how these factors interrupt democratic engagement over time. Moving on to examine the curriculum in more detail, Part 3 explores how we can promote equity across the curriculum, and Part 4 closely considers how we can expand educational opportunities for marginalized groups within STEM education. The book will make invaluable reading for graduate students and researchers in Education – particularly Social Justice Education, Multicultural Education, Educational Policy and Politics, STEM Education, and Social Studies Education – as well as policymakers, in-service teachers, administrators, and activists.
